Hello I have a bottle of penicillin vk 500mg filled 9.29.10. prescribed by my dentist. Are they to old to use, I have a nasty cold. Thank you ## Hi Denise, sorry you aren't feeling well! But no, old or new, Penicillin isn't effective at treating the virus that causes a cold. It is only effective against bacterial infections. Additionally, improper use, such as taking it for a cold could lead to your developing antibiotic resistance, which could be very dangerous if you do get an actual infection that requires an antibiotic. It doesn't get dangerous once it's expired, but it does start to lose effectiveness, so it should just be disposed of properly. Taking it would further potentiate the risk of developing antibiotic resistance. Is there anything else I can help with? Le...

i have a bottle of penicilln v k 500mg tab sandoz my toung has been hurting i looked in the mirror and i see what looks like cuts just pass the tip of my toung this bottle is dated07-23-2009 is it ok to take it ## First of all, unless you have an active infection, this medication is not going to do anything to help. This is an antibiotic and it is important not to use them, when it isn't appropriate, because you run the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Second, this is even more of a danger, because this bottle of medication is outdate. The expiration date was 07-23-2010, after that, they start to lose their effectiveness and this creates an even bigger risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. Have you seen a doctor to see what it causing this problem? It co...

Hello. I have a terrible cough, not dry but very painful when coughing and my throat is itchy. Can I use penicillin vk to treat this? ## This is an antibiotic and should only be taken to treat a medically confirmed infection, taking it when you do not have an infection could cause you to develop antibiotic resistant bacteria, as warned by NIH reports. It's typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. Has there been any change, or are you still experiencing these symptoms? Are you on any other medications? ## I have a severe case of cough/congestion and have been taking penicillin but it's not helping! What else can I take to take it away?

I've been taking ic penicillian as perscribed for about a week now. And I've started getting a rash on the palms of my hands and legs. should i stop taking the penicillian immediately or finish the course. ## HI, Brit! Sorry about the rash. From your description, it's difficult to know what type of rash it is and why it has happened. There are two different types that you can experience from antibiotics. The first would be a non-allergic skin rash, this one usually just looks like small speckled spots similar to measles and it doesn't itch or swell. It's just kind of there, almost like you got a new set of freckles. The second is an allergic rash, which would include hives, they are raised, swollen bumps that itch and seem to spread. They may cycle and itch at differ...

what can or can't I mix with this medication? I'm waiting for a root canal, and my dentist prescribed it to me. ## I would see the Full Penicillin V Article and go down to the section for Interacting Medicines. Mary ## suzanne says: i am a dental assistant of 17 years and we give this medication to our patients all the time when we do root canals and extractions. So far no one has had any problems with mixing it with other meds. If you are taking a birth control pill, you may want to use other protection while using this antibiotic. My dentist prescribed 500 mg penicillin vk before a tooth procedure. I am also on 7.5 - 325 percocets twice daily for chronic cervical pain. Can I safely take these together? Any known serious adverse interactions? Thank you ## Hello, Glenn! How are you? No, I didn't find any problems or interactions listed, but it's always best to double check such information to be sure. However, I can tell you that these are often prescribed together to alleviate the pain an infection may cause, while eradicating the bacteria. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antibiotic as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Percocet is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, di...

Can I take Penicillin VK 500mg and Mucinex D along with my Methadone? I'm afraid it may cause breathing problems and would like some clarification. ## Hello, Michelle! How are you? I didn't find any interactions listed between the Penicillin and the Methadone, but there may be issues if you take the Mucinex D, since it contains Pseudoephedrine, which works like a stimulant and the Methadone is a depressant, so you should check with your doctor, before combining those. Penicillin is an antibiotic and according to the FDA, it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. [1] Mucinex-D is listed as containing Guaifenesin and Pseudoephedrine, it is used to alleviate congestion. Typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, in...

My mother has some Penicillin VK left from a previous dental infection in 2005, Is it safe for her to use now? ## It is too old to be effective. As pills age, the active ingredients start to break down and as time passes, you will get less and less of an effective dosage. Taking them now, also raises the risk of developing drug-resistan bacteria. So all around, it is not a good idea and she will be better off getting a new prescription.

I have a bad tooth that hurts and I have some penicillin that expired 6-24-2013 from a dentist. Would it be safe to take? ## Hello, Marty! How are you? This medication does not become dangerous, once expired, but it does start to lose effectiveness, thus it may not fully eradicate infectious bacteria, which creates the risk of it developing antibiotic resistance.
