What is better for nerve pain - Neurontin or Lyrica? I had surgery in both knees and an injection in my back. I also have osteoarthritis. ## Hello, Brenda! How are you? They have both been shown to be effective for some people, but the only way to see which one helps you is by trying one. They are both classified by the FDA as anticonvulsants that are approved to treat nerve pain and some mood disorders. Their typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight gain. Which one has your doctor recommended? ## Hi, Brenda; it may have taken me a while to come across your post but pregabalin (patent brand Pfizer LYRICA) is over twice the potency of gabapentin (Pfizer NEURONTIN). I personally can take neither - I was prescribed and titrated up to the m...

The Dr. Thought this would help with my nerve pain and anxiety I have been taking it for 3 weeks and have gained 6 pounds and it has affected my legg strength and how much I can walk should I quit taking it. I am a 68 year old woman. ## Hi Bev, Sorry to hear about the Gabapentin not working as intented. But I wouldn't stop taking it without talking to your doctor first. According to NIH.gov, if you were to suddenly stop taking it, you may experience withdrawal symptoms (such as anxiety, insomnia, pain, nausea, sweating, etc.) as a result of not tapering. For these reasons it's probably best to work with your doctor on gradually decreasing the dose over an allotted period of time (NIH recommends at least a week). I hope this helps! ## David thank you for your input but I already ...

a really good drug for nerve pain is neourotin or gapabentin (same thing) i may be spelling wrong. but it does wonders. your welcome. ## I am starting to wonder what is wrong with me even more because Gabapintin 600mgs does nothing at all for my pain from a frostbitten foot compounded by electrical shock while standing in some water while plugging up a buffer from a 220 volt socket Plus for some reason doctors here in Indianapolis don't have a clue as how to treat my problem. I wonder why none of them offered me any of the first medication you talked about ## It did nothing for my nerve pain too. It also made me crazy with brain zaps. ## As with any medication, Neurontin (Gabapentin) does not work for everyone that tries it. We are all different, so what works well for one person mi...

I have been reading some of the discussion threads and really would love your advice. So back in 2012 I slipped two discs with one that had a tear and I have spinal stenosis. Had wonderful docs that helped me get back to some since of normalcy. I had used Gabapentin for a period of time, then came off of it once I had an injection for my right leg nerve pain and numbness. Just a note, I have never been 100 percent probably not even 75 percent. There were times when the pain in my back was so bad, I would would just be angry. A second MRI was done last year and they told me I was not a candidate for surgery and gave me other suggestions like yoga, etc. That proved to be more harmful then good. Through it all I have tried to maintain some sort of life style and dealt with the pain with Ic...

I have been taking Gabapintin (Neurontin) for fibromyalgia pain. Although it has worked well I have gained close to 35 pounds. Does anyone know of a anti-nerve pain pill that does not cause weight gain. ## There is really no way a doctor or anyone else can know ahead of time how any medication can affect anyone. They can only assume that it will be effective based on medical records, current health, age, what the condition is, whether or not any other medications are being taken at the same time, etc. Any of these factors as well as others can affect how you respond to this drug. Personally, I think if you are able to do so, that a significant change in diet and exercise habits would prove to be effective. From what I can tell, the medication you are taking may cause cravings and/or pro...

Hi I had injured my right foot while playing cricket couple of months back and CT scan revealed a minor metatarsal fracture which was treated by putting on a fibreglass cast. However I was unable to walk and then my doc guessed I also had a soft tissue / nerve injury in the foot and prescribed gabapentin. After about a week of taking 100mg gabapentin twice daily, my pain has reduced substantially and I am now able to walk properly. What I want to know is that does gabapentin TREAT a nerve injury or only reduce the pain till the time one is taking the medicine? Will the pain come back once I stop taking it?

I have nerve pain from shingles, what is the best compounded topical cream too use. ## Hello, Roger! How are you? I really can't say, compounded creams require a prescription from your doctor and are prescribed according to what they know works best according to their experience with other patients. Thus, there is no set ingredient list. It can vary from doctor to doctor. However, many people with this issue benefit from something that specifically treats nerve pain, such as Gabapentin, either topically or orally. It is an anticonvulsant that also treats some forms of nerve pain and mood disorders. Typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, to the oral form may include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, mood swings, dry mouth and weight gain. What has your doctor advised you to use? ##...

Hi I'd like to know a North American alternate to Nereve Up OD. Thanks ## Nervup-OD is just a nutritional supplement that contains Methylcobalamin (vitamin B12), alpha lipoic acid, folic acid and pyridoxine (vitamin B6). All of these are available over the counter in the U.S. in most vitamin shops, drug stores and grocery stores, you'd just need to look for something that contains the same ingredients. You can also ask a pharmacist for assistance. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thanks for the reply. Had neck surgery. but it didn't help with my legs and feet. They are numb, feels like they are asleep, my hands also are numb and feel like sandpaper. Do you think Gabapetin 100mg 3 times a day will help with these affects. ## Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant that has also been proven effective at helping with certain types of nerve pain. Learn more Gabapentin details here. Some people get very good results from it and some don't. The only way to see if it will help you is to try it and see. You should not, however, expect it to work immediately like regular analgesics would, since that's not what it is, so it doesn't have any effect that fast. It can take 4 to 6 weeks for this medication to reach its full efficacy level in the body and you discover whether or not it work...

Hello, Three years ago I suffered from Bell's Palsy on the left side of my face. Actually at that time I also suffered from an emotional setback. I recovered from the Bell's Palsy but since then I have felt pain on the left side of my face. After that the pain has spread to my whole body. I feel a burning sensation, pain in my nerves and some times vibrations in my nerves. I think I'm suffering from neuralgia. Now for 2 months I have started having feeling tightness in my arm and leg, mostly on the left side but sometimes on the right side too. I underwent an MRI of the spinal cord. In the report, there was a mild diffuse disc bulge with Osteophytes seen at the C5-6 and C6-7 levels causing mild thermal sac and spinal cord indentation with mild narrowing of bilateral neural f...

Prior surgery in 2002 for spinal stenosis...bars and screws - sever stenosis above previous surgery ...Neurosurgeon prescribed Gabapentin 3 times a day for nerve block. ## Hello, Shirle! How are you? Gabapentin isn't actually a nerve block. The FDA actually classifies it as an anticonvulsant that can also help with certain types of nerve pain and some mood disorders. It can alleviate nerve pain, due to the way it works on the receptors in your brain. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood swings and weight changes. It works well for some people, but not all, which is normal for all medications. Is there anything else I can help with?
