Morphine Withdrawal

I was recently hospitalized and was given dilauted and morphine for 8 days. I was then sent home. I am now suffering from abdominal pain and cramping 4 days later. I did experience abdominal pain while in the hospital. Is this related to the morphine and how long will it last? ## Dilaudid contains Hydromorphone, so it is a narcotic, just like the Morphine, so it could also be causing some of the problem. I can't say with certainty, but it could be some mild withdrawal symptoms, which can happen with narcotics, however, you were only on them for a little over a week, so it really shouldn't late more than a few days. If it continues or gets worse, please make sure to contact your doctor. Are there any other questions? ## Thanks for the info. I will definitely see my physician if t...

I have been tapering off of 60 mgs of morphine for the last 3 months. I've been on it for 10 years. First on 120 mgs then in 2009 went to 90 and then to 60 by 2011, up to 90 for 9 months after tri level fusion in neck between c4-c7. Best thing I ever did was the surgery and it wasn't a bad recovery at all. I'm very happy with it. Anyway now I'm down to 5 mgs and thinking about just stopping. I have heard this part will be the hardest. Is this true? My withdrawals have not been bad and I have worked thru it all. Just nervous. Thanks. ## Hello, Tammy! How are you? That's not a very high dose to stop abruptly, but yes, you will most likely experience some withdrawal symptoms. The FDA lists them as possibly including nausea, fever, chills, rebound pain and diarrhea. It c...

I have been taking 2 each Morphine Sulfate 30 mg ER Tabs and 4 each Morphine Sulfate IMM REL 15 MG Tabs each day for about 3 weeks. I will run out a week before going back to my PM Doctor. What kind of withdrawals can I expect to experience? Also, What is the maximum daily allowable per the law? I wish to get about 3 or 4 Morphine Sulfate 30 mg ER Tabs when I see the PM Doctor. That would be 90 MG to 120 MG per day. Do they have 40 MG ER Tabs (3 X 40 = 120 MG)? Do they have 60 MG ER Tabs (2 X 60 = 120 MG)? How would I need to behave if I wish to show the PM Doctor the symptoms required to justify this dosage? Is this an unreasonable request? I have Chronic Lower and Middle back Pain. ## Hello, Yogi! How are you? I'm sorry, but under the new regulations, you'll only be able to be...

Seven years ago I was put on morphine 100mg twice a day and oxycodone 10-325 for breakthrough pain (up to 2 pills a day). Once I was put on that dosage, I felt normal, not ruled by pain like I had been for the past 7 years where I tried anything I could to just get the pain to a manageable level. I felt like I got my life back. My doctor suddenly retired and his practice was merged into a community health center. His pain patients were told they could stay on the pain medicine and they would be refereed to a pain specialist or they could try to wean off of it. I decided to see if I could reduce my dosage--mainly because it's hard finding a doctor who is willing to treat chronic pain. This doctor was running late (over an hour) so he was in a hurry to get through the appointment--the...

What happens when someone decides to quit taking Morphine? What are signs to watch for? ## Since this is an opioid medication, they are known to cause withdrawal symptoms after consistent use. If you see the Morphine Details page under "Dependence and withdrawal", it states: "Stage I, 6 to 14 hours after last dose: Drug craving, anxiety, irritability, perspiration, and mild to moderate dysphoria... Stage II, 14 to 18 hours after last dose: Yawning, heavy perspiration, mild depression, lacrimation, crying, headaches, runny nose, dysphoria, also intensification of the above symptoms, "yen sleep" (a waking trance-like state) Stage III, 16 to 24 hours after last dose: Rhinorrhea (runny nose) and increase in other of the above, dilated pupils, goose bumps (a purported ori...

I am trying to get off opiates myself but safely, I have been fighting this demon for years and I don't want it anymore. I have 26 of the 30mg morphine sulphate pills to help with the withdrawal discomfort, so how do I taper and do this process safely??? ## Be careful should consult with Dr to help u get off , if not start cutting it 5mg per day until u get down to 5mg and cut that in half for a few days u may want to get some Ben gay to rub on legs etc drink plenty of fluids try light activity Good Luck ## @Gracie, Sorry to hear about your situation. I do agree that it would probably be a good idea to work closely with your prescribing doctor on a tapering schedule that seems feasible. Although post #1's tapering advice seems sound, my understanding is that only the prescribing...

A few months ago my doctor put me on Morphine Sullfate ER 30 mg 2X a day. I had been using oxycodone at night to sleep and as needed during the day. I am not finding the morphine to be effective, and I want to stop using it. I still have some oxycodone 5 mg tablets. Is there a way I can wean myself off the morphine--and eventually the oxy--using the 5mg oxy tablets? At this point, I'd rather live with the pain than being shackled to the drugs. ## You can try, but will likely still experience some withdrawal effects. However, they will probably not be too severe if you have only been taking it for a few months. The most severe problem is usually the rebound pain, which can e worse than the pain you started taking the medication to treat. Have you consulted with your doctor? ## The do...

Two yrs ago I went cold turkey from 160mg oxycontin a day for six months. Was a living nightmare. Now I am planning detoxing from two 30mg morphine a day for about six months. Should I expect the same nightmare? ## HEY, I JUST DID IT THIS MONTH, WELL JULY TO AUG, AND I STARTED TO BREAK IN HALF MY MEDICINE, FROM 4 30mg OXYCONTIN & 2 60 MG OF MORPHINE,...DAMAGE FROM CANCER, I WANTED TO GO DOWN SLOWER, BECAUSE IT WASNT WORKING THAT GREAT FOR THAT TIME FRAME,...I HATED FEELING LIKE A PRISONER ALWAYS ON MY MED's OMG,..U LIVE AROUND THEM. I HAD NO CHOICE. MY PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR WOULD NOT SEE ME WITHOUT PAYMENT,.... CAN U IMAGINE? My Dr. switched me from the pain patch 75's changing it every three days. To Embeda 50 mg once a day. Now I am about to die from withdrawal effects. I don't understand because they are both opiate meds why switching from one to the other should matter. Please help !!! ## Hello, Mark! How are you feeling? Did he have you just directly switch from one to the other, with no break in between? If so, that's likely what's created the problem. Embeda contains Morphine and Naltrexone and, if you aren't already in full withdrawal, the Naltrexone can throw you into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mout...

I was on 60 mg time released Morphine 3× a day. The pain clinic got mad and released me because i would not get shots in my back, leaving me with 2 refills. So i went back to my family dr with a 1 month fill on my pills. Could not get in anywhere, i got screwed and now am going through withdrawals after being on Morphine for 6 years and Vicodin for about 8 years. I know it's hard with pain but to me it's just not worth it. The dr's are not caring, just leaving me to suffer. I feel like i have been hit by a truck then beat almost to death, u could not begin to know how bad this is unless u have went through it. I wish everyone well. You cant stay on the pain meds forever. My advice, don't get on pain meds. I'm done and will never take another one. Good luck. ## H...

I have taken 15 milligrams of morphine for 3 weeks. how long is withdrawals ## Hello, Sis! How are you? It can vary form person to person, according to the FDA, but usually it takes a week or so, since you've been on it for such a short period of time. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Typical withdrawal effects may include nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, restlessness, nervousness, chills and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I stopped taking Kadian 40mg 19 days ago. I am still taking oxycodone 5mg. It has been a rough 19 days (physically). I still have GI symptoms and can barely eat. I thought the nausea and diarrhea would be subsiding by now. I'm taking the oxycodone every 3-4 hours (5mg) and thought since I was still on that it would help the w/d symptoms. My next doctor's appointment isn't for a month and I guess I'm hard headed and decided to try to do this my own way and see if I could get through it. Does anyone have any thoughts, advice on the GI upset, suggestions? I just thought I'd be past this. I wasn't on a crazy high dose of Kadian but I had been on it for 5 or 6 years. I also want to make sure this is still likely related to withdrawal. Thanks ## Yes, there is a good ch...

I have been in pain management for years, lost my doctor along with other patients, and primary won't fill or says she can't and messes up my progress to get in new pain management in time. Now I'm losing Soma, was 3 times a day, now I have 7 tabs left. Was on 45 mg of morphine 3 times, oxycodone 15s and xanax 5 mg 3 times a day. Which she said she can not write for. Why, if she knew or thought this pain clinic was prescribing more than standard, did she never say a word until i had to go to her in desperation for this? Your primary that has to refer you and get info to get into a new pain clinic, I have very serious health issues no one is dealing with, I feel alone and suicidal. I even told my doctor and the old pain clinic staff that left, and not a bit of help, yet they ...

I took one 60 mg morphine pill around 9pm. It wasn't the morphine sulfate pill it was just regular morphine pill. So how long will the withdrawal symptoms last. ## Hi Babydoll! If you only took one pill this one time, you shouldn't feel any withdrawals at all.

Morphine 30 sulfate er made by Mylan does not help relieve pain does anyone else have that problem ## I too am finding morphine sulphate ER manufactured by Mylan is not as effective. Almost like going through early withdrawal symptoms, for example, morphine usually paralyzes intestinal movement and causes constipation. I am having cramping and looser stools. I question the correct amount contained in the tablets. ## Sorry to hear about your recent experiences. Medications can and often do affect everyone differently, whereas some people get great results, but there are others that it inevitably just doesn't work for no matter how much they take. However in the case of this particular drug, it seems the majority of people posting on here don't like Mylan's version of it. Addi...

taking morphine 15 mg S A. Have been on hydrocodone 10/325APAP, and oxycodone 10/325APAP. Don't seem to be getting any relief from the morphine. Is this just a transitition, or could there be an issue here ? ## Have you consulted your doctor? It could really be either that the dose of the Morphine isn't high enough to handle your pain, or some withdrawal/rebound effects from switching medications and there is also a possibility that it's a combination of both. ## I feel that I am not getting the relief I used to get from my medication. For the past 5 years I have been taking 6 norcos 10/325 and beginning 2 years ago I began to take 2 Oycontin 40 mg per day. My doctor is very difficult to talk to about increasing my dosage. What can I do? ## I SEE THIS IS AN OLD POST, BUT IT ...

I have been on percocet for about six years, now they want to transicion me to morphine sulfate(ms contin) 30mg, so the pain management doctor wants me to tae both until they can remove me from percocet.... to be onest with you I am afraid, can anyone give me more info.....Thanks ## Transitioning from one narcotic medication to another is usually not a problem, as long as your are given an equivalent dosage of the new one. There usually isn't any need to keep taking both to ease the transition, since one can prevent withdrawals from another. The Morphine isn't as strong as the Oxycodone, to you will require a higher dosage, to equal what you were taking, but it is very effective for many people. It can cause the same side effects, such as: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and dry m...

if I took a morphine 100mg and wanted to take a seboxin strip 3 hours later would I go into withdrawals or would I be ok I don't really know what would happen I don't want to go into withdrawals if I don't have to ## One of the ingredients in Suboxone is Naloxone, which is added to help prevent the abuse of other narcotics, while someone is under treatment with it…thus yes, it will throw you into dangerous withdrawals. When someone is starting treatment with it, they are specifically told not to take it, until they are already in full withdrawal, to avoid the danger. Both of these are potent narcotics and shouldn't be taken, unless they have been prescribed for you. They have the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, d...

I have been taking 60 mg of morphine a day for about two weeks now. I want to stop completely but l cannot afford to go through withdrawals being that l have two jobs. Can you please tell me how to wean myself off? I really do not want to take them anymore l know l will just become more addicted to them. Can l cut my doseage down over a period of time until l stop completely? Please help! ## Hello, Natalie! How are you? Yes, a slow taper is usually best to minimize withdrawal symptoms, but you should follow your doctor's instructions for the best results. The FDA lists the typical withdrawal symptoms as possibly including nausea, fever, chills, rebound pain, drowsiness and diarrhea. However, if you're taking the time released tablets, you can't actually cut them, because tha...

My husband is on 2 - 30 mg morphine daily. He feels terrible and just wants to get off. How? ## From personal experience, I can tell you that even only using it as prescribed can result in severe withdrawal symptoms if you stop cold turkey. Mine lasted for nearly a month. The best way to stop Morphine is to slowly taper it off, that way you minimize the withdrawals. He should really consult his doctor to get the best taper schedule and be under a doctor's supervision while he is stopping it. It is a very potent narcotic. Has he spoken to his doctor about his desire to stop using it, yet?
