However, this past April I nearly fully collasped while walking in my house. Thinking it was my heart, I spent 3 days in the hospital and was tested "head to foot" and no problems were found. I have been taking metropolol 25 mg 2x/day for years. My tablet has been oval shaped with what looks like an "m" then a center score and a script looking "B" under that when the pill is held upright. My latest refill is round with "M 18" and the other side is center scored. Are these the identically same medices? It is so difficult with so many generic medicnes being white tablets. I take a half a pill in the morning after breakfast and half after dinner. Is taking the half after dinner okay? ## It is, as long as your doctor approves and has told you to take 25mgs a day. In most cases, they prescribe it to be taken once a day, due to the fact that it makes more likely that someone will remember to take it and not miss doses. However, in some cases, it does work better for some people to take such medications in split doses. I found that I get much better control of my blood pressure and heart rate by spacing my doses throughout the day. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Is there anything else I can help with?

My blood pressure is 110/70, Why did my MD order Metropolol Tartrate 25mg.? ## 110/70 sounds like a reading within the normal blood pressure range. I'm not sure why you would have been prescribed Metoprolol (since it is typically used to treat high blood pressure). What did your doctor say with regards to why it has been prescribed to you? Is Metoprolol Tartrate 25 mg the same as Metoprolol ER 25 mg ? ## No, if it does not have something such as an ER, SR, XR or CR following the medication name, then it is not necessarily that same thing. Those abbreviations all signify that the medication is a controlled release formulation and one that does not have it is just the regular release formulation of the medication. However, if you received one, in place of the other, at your pharmacy, you should ask them to double check, as it may just have been a typing or printing error.

I was put on metoprolol about 3 weeks ago for hypertension and an ascending aortic aneurysm. I also have PVCs. I take 25 MG every 12 hours. My BP is better but not great. Some readings are normal and most are high (130/90-5 range) I have noticed more heart palpitations since taking it instead of less. I am having intermittent episodes of chest tightness and breathing being more labored. Also have a cough. Feels like a mild asthma attack. In the past, I would get exertional asthma with heavy exercise or laughing. My sleep is worse for waking up with a cough, palpitations, anxiety, or chest heaviness. I also have been hoarse and have a tickle in the back of my throat (postnasal drip?) Are these typical side effects? Do they warrant a reduction in my dosage? I see my cardiologist on Monday...

United Healthcare is raising the copay on this ptescription and recommending Metoprolol tartrate, . arvedilol or atenolol. Titled subject is $45 in 2012 vice $3. for alternatives. Are the alternatives safe, same side-effect, and would my doctor have to change the prescription with my supplier? ## Yes, they all pretty much have the possibility of causing the same side effects. However, the Carvedilol is known to cause them far less often than the other options you mentioned. Had been taking metoprolol xl 25 mg one daily for years without issue. Due to recent heart palpitations my dr prescribed metoprolol tartrate 50 mg twice daily. My mother has been taking metoprolol tartrate for 2 years. Six to eight weeks ago she started experiencing hallucinations(seeing things that are not real,) at night after taking the pill. She called her doctor but the doctor told her to break the pill in half, which is going from 50 to 25 mgs. I am afraid she will have an episode while driving.
