Is the medication Methotrexate a steroid ? ## No, if falls under the DMARD category. (Disease Modifying Anti-Rhuematic Drug) ## I take that medication for lupus. It is also used as a cancer chemotherapy medication. It can cause your blood sugar to go high, especially if you are a diabetic, cause severe headache, and diarrhea. ## Metho is sytotoxic, it inhibits an enzyme that participates in the production of folate (related to Folic Acid). Methotrexate acts specifically during DNA and RNA synthesis. It has a greater toxic effect on rapidly dividing cells. Your doctor must have explained you need supplement with enough folic acid (as high as 2-10 mg at least 5 times a week) and B12, as well as antioxidants and other vitamins and minerals. I hope you are taking curcumin, quercetin, boswel...

My daughter has lupus. How long does she need to take Methotrexate? Her hair has thinned as well. she takes it 1x a week.. ## Hello, Sherna37! How is your daughter? When it comes to a chronic condition, such as Lupus, you really have to weigh the risks to her life and health against the medication side effects. I'm female, so I'd not like my hair thinning, either, but it would be better than the complications that can arise, if her condition were left to rage out of control. That said, she should stay on it, as long as her doctors deems it appropriate and safe for her to take it. Other side effects to this medication, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include headache, dizziness and nausea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Hello! I hope your daughter is doing well. When I take Methotrexate (7.5 mg.) for my RA treatment, I get these swollen areas in the tissue, on my lower leg and sometimes in my forearms that will turn bright red (like a sunburn). It really is painful and seems to feel better once it turns red. This will last up to 4 days. Anyone out there with a similar re-action? ## I know exactly what you mean! I take the medication for my lupus. My doctor prescribed over the counter hydrocortisone cream and it does wonders. Also, when it is really sore he has me take vitamin e capsules, puncture them and squirt them on the area. Believe it or not, it really does take away a lot of the pain. Hope this helps. ## my husband passed away last year.. i have recently found a prescription which was for (100 ) 2.5 methotrexate to be taken as doctors in...

I have been taking Xarelto approx. one month for AFib. Taking this drug terrifies me! I also have a bad case of psoriasis. My dermatologist prescribed many different creams over time but they didn't help at all. Last week he suggested methotrexate but said I would need blood work including a TB blood evaluation. I am so undecided about what to do. Does anyone know of an alternative other than methotrexate for psoriasis? Both of these drugs have such serious side effects it scares me. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. ## Hi Mila, You asked about alternatives for psoriasis. I've been doing some research lately on Nigella Sativa (Black Cumin Seed Oil) for topical application as a psoriasis treatment. NIH posted some clinical studies indicating its use as a remedy for suc...

I've perscribed methotrexate for psoriatic arthritis. Can i take a combination of ibuprofen, paracetamol and codeine (myprodol) to relieve a headache? ## Have you consulted your doctor? Taking the Methotrexate with the Ibuprofen can actually raise the levels of Methotrexate that is absorbed in your body, which could reach toxic levels, so they should never be combined without your doctor's approval and monitoring.

I have been on Methotrexate and folic acid for 3 weeks. Started with three 2.5 mg tablets of MTX for two weeks, then up to 6 tablets this week. The first week, I had terrible stomach pains, the second week I had bad fatigue. After taking my 6 pills on Friday, the side effects have been bad: nausea, no vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, back and right side pain and a rash. I finally reached the doctor on call in my practice (Memorial Day), and his comment was that it didn't look like I could take 6. My question is this, if you have switched to the injectable MTX, did you have less side effects, and at what point in your treatment did you switch? ## Hi my son started taking the injection 3 weeks ago he have had some stomach pain but no nausea. But she is taking folic acid at least 5 times a week 5to 10 mg, and injecting B12 3 times a week (one of these injections with B1 and B6),. Hello, I take .6 ml methotrexate weekly plus plaquenil and sulfasalazine. I've been completely knocked out with a head/chest cold for the past three days. Now my fever is down; can I go back to work tomorrow or will I just did myself in deeper? Any advice would be appreciated. ## FROM PAST EXPERIENCE, IT USUALLY RECOMMENDED NOT TO RESUME NORMAL ACTIVITY UNTIL A FEVER IS GONE FOR 24 HOURS. ## @Bratbaby, I agree with the previous comment, in that you should probably wait it out until you've fully recovered from the fever and/or whatever cold symptoms you might still have. At this point your immune system has to take time to build itself back up again through getting plenty of rest, proper nutrition, and not stressing out about anything. Methotrexate on the other hand, is known for...

I've been diagnosed with RA. Been on methotrexate about a year then started getting skin problems, always at dermatologist. Then last thing I just discovered was on my vulva area a white spot it attacks soft tissue. Came to find out its squamous cell carcinoma... surgically removed thank God. Now my rheumatologist wants me to start on methotrexate again and could happen again. Lord help, everything else has same effects if not worse. What to do? Pain comes back without it. ## Diagnosed with RA and take no meds because of their side effects. I did hear Hydroxyclorophine works the best. Methotrexate is a chemo drug.
