The same lot number is usually used for a certain production run of a drug, so for instance the same lot number might be used on 5 million bottles of Tylenol that were made on a certain day, on a certain factory shift. The manufacturer does keep track of where those lot numbers are sent, but as I am sure you can guess, that can equal many stores in various areas of the country.
