Levaquin Levofloxacin

Levofloxacin, sold under the brand name Levaquin among others, is an antibiotic medication.[3] It is used to treat a number of bacterial infections including acute bacterial sinusitis, pneumonia, H. pylori (in combination with other medications), urinary tract infections, chronic prostatitis, and some types of gastroenteritis.[3] Along with other antibiotics it may be used to treat tuberculosis, meningitis, or pelvic inflammatory disease.[3] Use...

I was given levaquin post pneumonia to combat another suspected respiratory infection. Within two weeks every joint in my body hurt. That lasted 8 weeks. During that time I experienced a vitreo macular separation in my right eye. Soon after this my hair began to fall out. I lost about 50% of it. My symptoms have subsided but I realize I am one of the lucky ones. This drug is toxic to so many people. I have taken cipro in the past with no ill effect but levaquin put me over the edge. Never again. My heart goes out to those who continue to suffer. ## Hello, Makkay! How are you doing, now? I'm very sorry about what you went through. Actually, from the posts I've read on here over the past year, it seems many more people are starting to have bad reactions to various antibiotics. I...

I've had a bad month with flu and a sinus infection. I'm somewhat immune compromised as I take immuran for Crohn's Disease. I was prescribed doxycycline, and then azithromycin, with no relief from the sinusitis. My doc put me on a 3 week course of levaquin 750mg. The levaquin has been helping my sinusitis, but I've been developing some troubling side effects. First side effect was gastritis with nausea. As I have Crohn's, I know how to deal with gastritis, but none of my usual strategies were working. Finally just did some pretty big doses of liquid gaviscom, which did help. Then, night before last, I started with some really horrible skin crawls. Full bore, ants crawling under my skin feeling, and nothing helped. I was truly losing my mind with it. Scalding hot bath...

I tool Levaquin and Flagyl to fight diverticulitis on three different occasions within a two month period. I developed severe muscle pain and weakness in my legs, hands, and arms along with joint pain in my knees, ankles, and fingers. I was unable to get up out of a chair and could barely walk. I ached horribly just trying to turn over in bed. This drug is absolute poison. I finally put it all together and called my doctor who immediately took me off Levaquin. I was so worried that I would not recover. I have been off Levaquin now for four days and the improvement is remarkable. I am far from my normal self but I am hopeful that I will make a full recovery eventually. I advise everyone to avoid this drug like the plague. This is an awful medication and causes serious damage. ## I know i...

Could taking levaquin possibly have caused my arthritis to flare up worse than it ever has? ## After looking at all the possible side effects associated with Levaquin (Levofloxacin), I think there is a high chance that it did cause your arthritis to flare up. A few side effects that could have caused this are: -tingling or swelling of the face, neck, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs -joint or muscle pain -unusual bruising or bleeding -flu-like symptoms -uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body -pain, burning, tingling, numbness, and/or weakness in a part of the body Click on the link below to view the full list of side effects: Please post back if you have any other general questions or concerns about this drug. ## I agree with David that Levaquin could...

I recently took 750mg of Levaquin for 14 days (I've only been off for 3 days). I've had so many side effects from this and just wondering if anyone else had similar symptoms, also wondering if anyone knows how long it remains in the system? My side effects are: chest pain, nausea, diarrhea after eating anything, bloating, gas, pain in my arms and shoulders, pinprick sensations in arms, some numbness in arms, fatigue, I sleep all day, dizziness, and a weak feeling. I honestly though I was having a heart attack until I called one of my nurse friends and she said this was normal with Levaquin. But, I could only find generic side effects, nothing to this extent. I've constantly been tracking my heart rate and it's fine, my blood pressure and blood sugar have both always been...

sinus infection ## You may want to think twice about taking Levaquin for a sinus infection. The Side Effects of Levaquin, while rare, can be permanently disabling even after just a few doses. And sinus infections are RARELY due to bacteria- they are much more frequently due to fungal infections which antibiotics will not help anyway. Talk to your doctor and find out how he knows that your sinus infection is NOT due to a fungal infection before you commit to taking something with such dangerous side effects.

Has anyone had hair loss after taking Levaquin? I've read it can deplete magnesium and iron and cause hair loss. Mine started one month after my last 10 day dose. I feel like it has to be connected. Anyone who has had this, please let me know! Docs never want to admit this can be cause, but I feel like it's too much of a cooincidence! Help! ## Yes, as listed by the FDA, alopecia (hair loss) is a known side effect of this medication, along with nausea, dizziness, headache and photosensitivity. However, such side effects are usually transient and will reverse, once you finish your course of treatment, but it could take awhile for your body to balance things back out. Has there been any change, yet?

I took these drugs for 10 days. How long does it take to get out of system? ## Well, these drugs get out of your system rather quickly, just a few days. However, if you are still experiencing negative effects from them, then this is probably due to Side Effects of Levaquin, which can be devastating and take a long time to resolve- if they ever do.

I have been on Levaquin quite a lot over the last few years due to chronic bronchitis and sinus infections. I have, in addition to, muscle and nerve pain, have had some unusual issues and wonder if they are related to the Levaquin. I have noticed my lips are somewhat swollen and burning; additionally, my vagina feels like it is on fire as well. My face itches but no rash. I have been on Levaquin, since last fall, 2 months straight of 500mg per day to clear sinus infection. Then this winter I was on it 3 times for 10 days and once again last month for 10 days. I don't think it is really helping me and I know I am having problems from it. I had nose surgery 4 years ago and contracted MRSA after it. Since then they always put me on Levaquin. What alternative are there? Also, no one eve...

I was diagnosed with prostitis. I am a 25 yr old Male. I took 2 doses of 500mg (2 days worth out of 14). On the third day I decided to stop and switched to bactrium. That day I also worked out. The following night (over 24 hours from last dose of Levaquin) I woke up in the middle of the night and my left Achilles tendon was really sore and had a rash. I was wearing a sleeve for plantar facitis at the time. So I took off the sleeve and rash+ swelling went away. Side note I have felt "warm" since I have taken levaquin. My question is was the swelling and rash due to the levaquin? I have worn the sleeve many times and never has this happened. also when will levaquin be out of my system? Thank you and sorry for the spelling ## Hello, Mike! How are you? I'm sorry about the proble...

just wondering if nitrofuran monohyd is the same as levaquin and is it any more effective than Cipro? ## No, it is not the same. Levaquin contains Levofloxacin, which is different than the Nitrofurantoin. The Cipro and Levaquin are much more similar, because Cipro contains Ciprofloxacin. There is really no way to say that one is more effective than any other. It depends on the type of infection being treated, the severity of it and the person's response to any given antibiotic. Learn more: Is there anything else I can help with? ## No, they are not the same drugs. But if you have a choice of the two drugs, both of which might be effective for your particular condition, it would be smart to choose the nitrofuran monohyd because the side effects of Levaquin can be devastating. Any tim...

Recently the same day, I started taking 2 medicines. ChlorTabs (4mg/3-4 times daily) and Levaquin (500mg 1/day). Simultaneously, I began having backache around the kidneys - first time. Did 1 of meds caused this? which one? ## Yes. Almost certainly this was a result of the Levaquin, which can have side effects that range all the way from minor to disabling. See the page on Side Effects of Levaquin to see why if you ever have a choice of antibiotics, you should always choose to have a drug that is not in the Fluoroquinolone family of antibiotics. They are very dangerous. And now that you have had a reaction to one, you should avoid all of the drugs in this class of antibiotics forever unless you have a life threatening illness than can't be solved without these drugs. You've prov...

I was given levaquin intravenously on 8/21,22/2013. It is now 2016. My balance is of and I have nerve damage, so severe that I had to take 8 weeks of therapy to try and get most of this corrected, and other life changing problems like depression, short term memory lost, confusion and hallucination. Sad part is I live in Arkansas. I've spoken with maybe four different law firms and no one will take my case. My pcp and a ENT specialist are covering up the fact that levaquin is the cause of all this and I have documentation to prove my allegation. I resigned from my job of nearly 14 years in December of 2015 because I just couldn't do it anymore walking 15 minutes my whole body locks up as if I weigh 2000 lbs and that's after laying down or sitting for that length of time. Does...

What types of side effects did you experience? Did you report them to your doctor? ## The side affects from Levaquin are extremly painful Rheumatoid Arthritis and all the complications that come with it and the medications I must take in order to "Move". It has forever changed my life for the worse. ## Hi Susie, I'm so sorry to hear about your experiences with Levaquin. I've taken 4 out of 7 of my Levaquin pills. I take them at 7 pm every night for a UTI. Do you think I can change it to about 11 am instead for the last 3 doses? I can't sleep at night and feel awful. I'm hoping I can finish them if I take the last ones earlier in the day. ## Yes, that really won't make a difference, but I'd suggest double checking with your pharmacy to be sure. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. Are you on any other medications?

500mg by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, prescribed for severe sinus infection. ## I think there is a listing for Cipro Tendonitis is small with these drugs, the damaging effects can be lifelong and disabling. Every single person that I have spoken to who has been damaged by these drugs told me If I'd have only known what it could do, I would have never taken it. Well, now you know. ## Anyone considering taking Levaquin please DON'T. The side affects are real an can ruin your life. I'm only saying this to help others because it has ruined mine!

I've been taking Levaquin for about five days now for a sinus infection and it is not working at all. I took one at 1:00 today. How many hours do I have to wait to switch to a Clindamycin or an Amoxicillin? ## Hi Ann, Sorry to hear about your situation. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool), there are no interactions listed between Levaquin, Clindamycin or Amoxicillin. That said, I'm of the theoretical opinion that you shouldn't have to wait at all... This finding does not necessarily mean that no interactions exist. However, if in doubt, your best bet would probably be to contact your prescribing doctor and/or local pharmacist just to be on the safe side. I hope this helps and that you get around to feeling better soon!

I have been on Levaquin for pneumonia for 8 days now, i haven't had any negative side effects yet. After reading all these bad experiences it makes me not want to finish my last 2 doses. Should I be worried even though I haven't had any negative side effects? ## Hi Jason, All prescription drugs carry the possible risk of side effects, but the important thing to understand is that not everyone who takes these drugs experiences them; they are merely risk factors in that regard. If it's been working for you without any complications then I see no reason to be concerned. However, if you feel that the possible risks outweigh whatever benefit you are receiving from the medication, then I would still encourage you to talk with your doctor about other safer alternatives, if there ar...

I had a minor sinus infection and my Doc prescribed two weeks worth of levaquin. My side effects were instant. I had muscle and joint pain and weakness. Doc said it was normal. This was four months ago and my life is just a shell of what it once was. I hurt all the time. I have Parkinson type tremors and my kidneys are failing. As I write I am sitting in the hospital. No end in sight. I can no longer do the things I love, ride motorcycles or play guitar. I have lost all hope of being the person I was just a few short months ago. I am writing my story for two reasons, one to warn others and secondly looking for hope. Has anyone had muscle pain and fatique and found it went away over time. thank you ## Wow, Billy!
