IS IT A FORM of penicillin? Can it be used for sinus infections? ## Cephalexin is not a form of penicillin. I am allergic to penicillin, so I am given Cephalexin all the time. It can be used for a number of infections including sinus infections. Cephalexin is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics and is used to fight bacteria in the body. It works by interfering with the bacteria's cell wall formation, causing it to rupture, and killing the bacteria. Cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. ## I have a penicillin alergy and was prescribed cephalexin. I broke out in a ash on my chest within a few hours of taking cephalexin. I waited a day and tried ...

I AM ALERGY TO PENICILLIN AND I WAS GIVEN CEPHALEXIN TO TREAT A BOIL ABSSES,WOULD IT HAPPEN SOMETHING TO ME?? ## Hello, Jose! How are you? No, Cephalexin is the active ingredient in this, it doesn't contain any Penicillin. However, there is still a slight risk that you may be allergic to it, too. People allergic to one medication tend to be more prone to being allergic to others. The FDA classifies this medication as being an antibiotic that is most commonly used to treat or prevent bacterial infections. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

Im allergic to penicillen and was given cephalexin, can I take them or will it kill me like penicillin will?? ## Hi Franny, Based on my research, Penicillin and Cephalexin are classified as two different types of antibiotics (cephalosporin antibiotics and penicillin antibiotics). However, more information I'm finding states that there is some clinical and laboratory evidence of partial cross-allergenicity of the penicillins and the cephalosporins. Apparently there have been patients who reported severe reactions to both medications. So I don't think any exceptions should be made for Cephalexin in this regard either (at least to play it safe). You can learn more about this drug on the page for Cephalexin Details Was your doctor aware of this before prescribing you the medication?...

i had very bad reaction to this drug always been okay with antibiotics eg penicillin ## Cephalexin is an antibiotic and it is fairly common for people to be able to use several, then suddenly have a bad reaction to one. Have you made sure that the fact that you have a problem with it is listed in your medical records and listed with your pharmacy? ## wouldnt have thought of that ty verwon ## I was given the same drug by a dentist now have c.difficile. It causes severe diarrhea & if you google it you'll be amazed at all the people who've had the same problems. It's one scary drug. If I would've known then what I know now I wouldn't have ever taken it, nor will I ever take again! It's dangerous!

i can take amoxycillin... can i take cephalexin 500mg?? ## Hello, Libby! How are you? You can or cannot take Amoxicillin? Has your doctor prescribed the Cephalexin? ## @Libby - do you have any known medication allergies? Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic, whereas Cephalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic. They are generally prescribed for similar types of bacterial infections (Cephalexin being given to those sensitive to penicillin antibiotics). I think you should be fine, just be sure to pay close attention to listed side effects or signs of an allergic reaction. When in doubt double check with your prescriber as well. Some possible side effects of the Cephalexin are: "Common adverse effects include digestive system upset such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and abd...

My doctor gave me keflex, I received the generic drug for it. When I was 5 or 6 I had a severe allergic reaction to penicillin...trouble breathing and hives and my parents had to take me to ER. I think I've used keflex before but I'm not sure. Just want to make sure it's ok. Should I take it and have a reaction, would I be proactive by having benedryl nearby? Thank you! ## Hello, Tiffany! How are you? Keflex contains the active ingredient Cephalexin, so it's a different medication. But yes, if you have ever had an allergy problem, you can't go wrong by keeping Benadryl around, just in case, as long as it's safe for you to take. Side effects to this antibiotic may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help wit...

Going to the dentist tomorrow for teeth cleaning, and in the past have taken Kefex( Cephalexin ) 2000mg to prevent any chance of an infection. I am currently near the Mexican border, and have excess to a penicillin called Pota-Vi-Kin. Will this be as effective? ## They are both antibiotics that are used to treat, or prevent bacterial infections. But you should take the one that your doctor, or dentist feels is best for you. Why do you usually take one? Do you have a heart condition? The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including dizziness, headache, diarrhea, nausea, and non-allergic skin rash.

I'm allergic to penicillin but was given keflex. is this safe or suicide? ## Hello, Big Taz! How are you? Keflex contains the active ingredient Cephalexin, so it is different than Penicillin. Its side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. There is always a slight risk of your being allergic to another antibiotic, but very slight. Is there anything else I can help with?

is this drug for people elergic to penicilina ## Cephalexin is an antibiotic like Penicillin, although it is not the same medication. It is prescribed for a variety of reasons, and may not have anything to do with somebody being allergic to Penicillin. If you would like to read more about this medication, please see:

What are these for? I was given Falexin 500mg in Mexico, but don't know anything about them. They are blue and white capsules. ## From what information I was able to gather, Falexin is a brand name for Cephalexin (cefalexina); which comes in 500mg doses. They are manufactured by a pharmaceutical company called Farabi based in Iran. You can view the company's page in the link below: Unfortunately, I haven't been able to locate any information on "andromex" listed in your description. I hope the above information helps! ## Does Falexin contain Penicillin? I am unable to take Penicillin and need an antibiotic. ## Is this the same as azithromycin tablets?

Im alergic to penicillin. Is it okay to take cefalexina? ## Hello, Ronald! How are you? Cephalexin is in a different class of antibiotics, but there is always a risk that you may be allergic to it also. When you're allergic to one medication, you usually end up finding more that cause allergic reactions. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

I am in Merida Mexico, I do not speak Spanish. I have developed a boil. In Canada I have been prescribed Flucloxacillin and Cephalexin at differing times in the past. What would that be called in Spanish? Is it available? ## just in case anyone else finds themselves in this odd and most unlikely position. I went to a Dr. who was trained in the U.S. he told me that Mexico does not have antibiotics of that type or strength. He prescribed POSIPEN which is Dicloxacilina.. a form of penicillin. One every 10 hours for 7 days.

I was prescribed this for a sinus infection. First of all u cant take this with probenicid. I am also allergic to penicillin. after three days taking ceftin 500mg twice a day. My entire body was aching and joints are hurting. The pharmacy didn't even catch this. ## Hello, Donna! How are you? It isn't that they can't be taken together, it's just that the Cephalexin may increase the effect of the Probenicid, so it must be prescribed cautiously. The body aches can happen with most antibiotics and is usually due to a combination of taking them and your body fighting the infection. The other side effects to this antibiotic may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, if you are concerned about taking both, then please consult your doctor, to be...
