Why was my 9yr. old child prescibed hydroxyz for his first bout with urticaria instead of benydryll? ## Dear MOM - " Hydroxyzine is used primarily as an antihistamine for the treatment of itching, allergies, hyperalgesia, motion sickness-induced nausea, and insomnia, as well as notably for the treatment of mild anxiety. Even though it is an effective sedative, hypnotic, analgesic, and tranquilizer, it shares almost none of the abuse, dependence, addiction, and toxicity potential of other drugs used for the same range of therapeutic reasons. It doesn't get dangerous once it's expired, but it does begin to lose effectiveness, so it may not work as well as it did, when it was new. Medications tend to degrade over time. Thus, it would be best to dispose of it and see your doctor for a new prescription, if you still need to take it. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this antihistamine as possibly including nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and somnolence. Is there anything else I can help with?
