How To Cut A Patch Gel

Ive been given the Fentanyl patch made by Aviva by my local pharmacy.Before this ive always gotten the Gel filled brand.The Aviva brand are causing side effects as you may have read in my previous post.I called my Pharmacy and told them about this and they said Every brand of Fentanyl patch is differant and this type is probably too strong an i may need to reduce the strength per my next doctor visit.I was curious if i could just cut these in half an see if it helps?Any replies would be appreciated. ## Yes, it seems there are some that are safe to cut, but you should never do so, without checking with your pharmacist, first. I asked my doctor the same question yesterday, she said "no", because once it hits the air, the strength starts to dissipate, or weaken. So she put me on the lowest dose, as I hope to get off them and all meds eventually. ## No, you can't cut it in half and the reason for it is because it is time released and cutting the patch could cause you to get too much of the medication at once, which may result in a dangerous overdose. My husband ran out of his 50 mcg Fentanyl Patches on Monday. Today is Friday 12/11/09 and he is experiencing withdrawals. The patches are supposed to be available today (it's 3 a.m. here). Is there ANYTHING that can help him until he receives his RX? He has the chills, sneezing, stomach cramps, moaning, restlessness, etc. Please help ... ## I have been on the patches for a wile now and the best he could do for the time being is to take the last patch he was wearing and cut a hole in the corner and push out a pea sized drop of the gel and {edited for safety reasons} just to be carefully only use a little amout to start with and give in about 15 mins and I promise he will feel tons better. I was on hydrocodone, xanax, soma and I was given a fentanyl patch 100mcg due to a fall. It damn near killed me. Because of sheer stupidity, I cut this patch and took a minuscule amount of the gel, evidently an extreme amount went into my system. My nurse at the time (I actually had a HH RN) was there 30 minutes after I took it, I was having chest pain, was very confused. And a ROOKIE paramedic gave me Morphine! 4mg IV push was added to the prior "recipe/concoction" and it through me in to SEVERE Respiratory Depression. I was breathing 6RPM in less than a 7 minute ride to the ER / unconscious of course; and a Nurse Practitioner in her infinite wisdom without looking at my med list, or seeing I was taking medication for chronic pain gave me Narcan which could have put me in full ...
