I started taking Gabapentin and about 8 days later I broke out in red sores and pimples on my entire back and shoulders. I wondered if anyone has reported such a reaction to this drug. I am now experiencing my throat swollen, red, and scratchy with white pockets. I did stop taking the medication and the skin is slowly clearing but the throat is still bad. Please offer some education back gound on similar concerns to date. Thanks J ## It really doesn't sound like something that was caused by the Gabapentin, especially what you're describing about your throat, that sounds more like a strep infection and the same could be true of the sores and pimples you had on your back, since it can also infect the skin topically. I've been taking one gabapentin 300 mg three times per day starting six days ago for severe spinal stenosis. It's been a miracle drug for me in terms of pain relief and makes oxycodone seem like a placebo. Unfortunately, starting two days ago I started to experience pronounced swelling in my legs and feet. I'm already taking 25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide for high blood pressure and I thought that would prevent any swelling but it hasn't. If I can deal with the swelling and being uncomfortable from it do I still have to go off the gabapentin? Are there any medical reasons I can't accept the swelling in order to have the benefits of the gabapentin? After the first two days on gabapentin I went from 10 mg of oxycodone every 4 hours to 5 mg twice a day, sometimes just onc... ...

Gabapentin can cause these types of side effects in anywhere between 1 to 7% of the people that use it. How are you doing? Have things gotten any better? This medication can cause those types of issues as side effects, when you first start taking it, but unless you are suicidal they usually don't require an ER trip. But what happened? need to discuss with someone about the proper dosage of this med. ## There is really no set dosage for this, though you do need to start at a low dosage and gradually add more until you find the amount that works effectively for you. Most doctors will start with 100mgs taken 2 to 3 times a day, then go up to 300 and continue adding until they find what works for each patient. It would take a tremendous amount to OD on this, which is why so many doctors like to use it, they can take the dosage very high, without danger and it has very few side effects. Your best bet then, is to take your doctors advice on what you should be taking and how often. ## I just started gabapentin. How long before side effects resolve from gabapentin?

My father who is 79 was started on 300 mg of gabapentin, three times a day. After the 4th dose, he was having hallucinations, tremors, and became tachycardic and arrhythmic. Although the MD prescribing would not say stop the medication, his cardiologist advised immediately stopping. He continues to be lethargic, confused and although better, still has some tremors about 36 hours after taking his last dose. His heart rate is down to around 84 now. How much longer until these side effects resolve? ## Hi Snigs, I'm very sorry to hear about your father's situation. Based on your description, it sounds to me like his cardiologist may know best. I started slurring my words on the gabapentin then felt like wherever I was, I was inside a bubble it was a terrible feeling ## If you have been on it for such a short period of time, they shouldn't last more than a few days, perhaps a week at most. but it can vary from person to person, so I can only give an average from other anecdotal reports. Lyrica is in the same class, so it may or may not cause the same type of problem for you, there's really no way to know without ... ...

I'm taking 300 mg of gabapentin three times a day and noticed a rapid weight gain. I think it's mostly water retention and I was wondering if taking one Lasix a day would help me loose the weigh and keep it off and not cause any other catastrophe. ## Hello, Margareta! How are you? With the possible risks associated with such rapid fluid retention, it would be best to have it checked out, rather than trying to treat it yourself. It does have the potential to lead to congestive heart failure. How long have you been taking the Gabapentin? It can also just cause regular weight gain and not just fluid gain. Other side effects may include nausea, dizziness and mood swings. ...

Big increase in gabapentin
1 Reply RSS
My neurologist has me taking 1200 Mg of gabapentin and my pain specialist increased that to 3000 Mg a day. Will that big of an increase cause me any problems or side effects? ## Hi Susie, Based on my research, many patients are being told that 1,800mg is the maximum recommended dose for nerve pain. Although another drug article I found states that, "Efficacy was demonstrated in clinical studies over a range of 1800 mg/day to 3600 mg/day. However, no additional benefit was demonstrated from the use of doses over 1800 mg/day." - I'm not sure if your pain specialist is aware of this? Regarding side effects, there's always a risk involved with any prescription medication. But if you're taking an increased dose, it's likely that your risk of experiencing certain side ... ...

Gabapentin and the elderly
2 Replies RSS
My mother has been taking Gabapentin 600 mg, twice a day for several years. Recently her Dr. Lowered her dose to 300 mg twice a day. He said the FDA would not allow him to give her a larger dose because of her age, 93 years old. What can you tell me about this? ## It's been found that with some medications, such as Gabapentin, the elderly are more prone to experiencing side effects and/or severe complications. It has seriously endangered the lives of some of them, when their doctors weren't monitoring them closely, so the FDA has started a recent crackdown and can hold the doctors responsible for such harm. The concern has gotten so great, that many insurance companies are just refusing to cover the medications for anyone over 65, or so. Is there anything else I can help with? #... ...
