Iv been taking gabapentin and iv been having sharp pains in my head that goes to my eyes why is that ## Hi Dameris, Based on my research, Gabapentin was originally developed for the treatment of epilepsy, and is currently widely used to relieve neuropathic pain. Gabapentin's most common side effects in adult patients include dizziness, drowsiness, and peripheral edema (swelling of extremities); these mainly occur at higher doses, in the elderly. However, headaches/migraines and eye pain are a couple of the rare and unexplained side effects, so I would speak with a doctor about the problems you are experiencing. For neuropathic pain. Can this cause small spots of dry skin all over the trunk of the body/breasts/ and now face? ## Hello, Ace! How are you? Yes, that can be a side effect of this medication, as reported by the FDA. You may also experience dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight gain. However, side effects are usually transient and go away with time, as your body gets used to a medication, but that may take 4 to 5 weeks. If things worsen, or if they don't eventually go away, you should consult your prescriber. Is there anything else I can help with?

I am on 100 mg gabapentin and I don't do well with side effects like not being able to sit still or sleep. ## Hello, Doug! How are you? It's odd that it would cause you to have problems sitting still, because it is often used now to treat RLS. It's also known to cause drowsiness as a side effect, by the FDA. Other typical side effects may possibly include nausea, headache and weight gain. How long have you been taking it? Is this the only medication you take?

For four years, I've taken 100mg of Gabapentin (one capsule) along with 0.50mg of Ropinirole (two pills) at night only for Restless Leg Syndrome. I am 76 years old. There were times when I felt that I really could, maybe even should have increased, as directed but I just hate taking any kind of medicines and finally, it felt more ok enough to not increase. So, I did not. Now, I would like to get off of all of it but since the Gabapentin is one capsule, how I can taper off from that one? I can go down slowly on the Ropinirole by taking only one tablet each night as each one is .25mg but I do not know how I can cut the Gabapentin capsule with the powder medicine inside in half. Any suggestions or anyone else have a similar question? ## In many cases, doctor's will instruct the pat...

The Dr. Thought this would help with my nerve pain and anxiety I have been taking it for 3 weeks and have gained 6 pounds and it has affected my legg strength and how much I can walk should I quit taking it. I am a 68 year old woman. ## Hi Bev, Sorry to hear about the Gabapentin not working as intented. But I wouldn't stop taking it without talking to your doctor first. According to NIH.gov, if you were to suddenly stop taking it, you may experience withdrawal symptoms (such as anxiety, insomnia, pain, nausea, sweating, etc.) as a result of not tapering. For these reasons it's probably best to work with your doctor on gradually decreasing the dose over an allotted period of time (NIH recommends at least a week). I hope this helps! ## David thank you for your input but I already ...

Following knee replacement surgery I was diagnosed 2 x 100mg Gabapentin. Three times a day. After discharge I had to get a renewed prescription and I have now noticed that the Pharmacist has given me 300mg Gabapentin capsules by mistake. This means I have been on 2 x 300mg Gabapentin Three times a day. Is it a coincidence that three days after being discharged after I started the overdose I have developed cellulitis in the lower leg that had the knee replacement? ## Hello, Paul! How are you? Yes, that most likely is a coincidence, since cellulitis is a type of deep tissue infection. Are you on an antibiotic for it? As to your Gabapentin prescription, you should take that one back to the pharmacy and have them correct it. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nause...

I have started taking gabapentin 100mg twice a day. When is the best time to take it. Do the side effects go away or do you just have to put up with them? ## Hi sarah, Dosing schedules for Gabapentin are largely dependent upon your reasons for taking it. (i.e. - the usual adult dose for Epilepsy is as follows): Initial dose: 300 mg orally on day one, 300 mg orally twice a day on day two, then 300 mg orally 3 times a day on day three. Maintenance dose: 900 to 1800 mg orally in 3 divided doses. If necessary, the dose may be increased using 300 mg or 400 mg capsules three times a day up to 1800 mg/day. Dosages up to 2400 mg/day have been well tolerated in long-term clinical studies. Doses of 3600 mg/day have also been administered to a small number of patients for a relatively short durati...

I am trying to wean off of gabapentin, but the worst part is the itching, and the crazy restlessness at night. I’m taking one a day at 300 mg in the evening. By the time evening comes again the itching starts happening. How do I wean off this/300 mg a day, and is there anything I can take for the itching. I did start taking magnesium a couple days ago. I was on it for about 4 to 5 weeks, at 1800 mg a day. No one told me to not go cold turkey, so I did and that was a horrible week. So I went back to taking one a day and I want to get off of these now. ## This medication comes in lower dosages, so you could speak to your doctor about using 100mg capsules, or tablets to help you taper off of it.
