someone please tell me the shelf life of sulfamethoxazole when being stored in a cool place. I've had this since 10/2013 it's now 2016 Can I take this now????? ## Hello, Pamela! How are you? If it is in bottle as dispensed by your pharmacy, it has an expiration date of one year, from the date you received it, because those bottles expose it to the elements that cause degradation. If it is in the original factory sealed bottle, then it is good for approximately 4 years, from the date you received it. If it is expired, it loses efficacy and could cause you to develop antibiotic resistant bacteria, so you should dispose of it and see your doctor for a new prescription, if an antibiotic is required. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, head...

Hi, I have some sulfamethoxazole 800/160mg and the prescribed date was 9/17/2013 and I was wondering if it is ok to still use? Thank you!! ## Hello, Joe! How are you? If you think you have an infection that requires an antibiotic, it would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription. Medications tend to lose effectiveness over time, which means that this one may no longer completely eradicate the bacteria, which puts you at risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with? ## No, thank you very much. I want to long-term store sulfamethoxazole for potential emergency use. What is the PRACTICAL shelf-life of this antibiotic? Forget about the manufacturer's statements. I want a real-world shelf life and storage instructions. ## From what I could gather, the estimated shelf life of the oral suspension and tablets are both 5 years. The manufacturer's storage instructions also suggest keeping it at room temperature and out of direct sunlight (below 86 degrees fahrenheit), to help prevent further degradation. According to a Harvard Medical School family health article, most types of medications are actually safe to use up to 10 to 15 years after their supposed expiration date listed by the manufacturer. However, there are some antibiotics in the Cycline class, which can be dangerou...

Does this stuff expire? I can not find an expiration date on it at all. ## According to the pamphlet linked below, this particular medication has a shelf life of 5 years (for both, Tablets as well as the Oral suspension), if stored properly (i.e. - below 30°C.): roche-australia.com2Ffmfiles2Fre72290052Fdownloads2Fantibiotics2Fbactrim-pi.pdf I hope this info helps! ## Was it already mixed into liquid form by your pharmacy? If so, then the expiration for such suspensions is usually very short, about a week to 10 days. Learn more Bactrim details here. If it's still in powder form, then it will have a much longer shelf life. Have you tried contacting the dispensing pharmacy to ask?

I have a prescription dated 01/07/13 for Sullfameth/trime thoprim 800/160 tabs, is it ok for me to take them now? ## Hello, Sylvia! How are you? This is a generic for the antibiotic Bactrim and the expiration date would have been one year from when it was dispensed to you by your pharmacy. Medications degrade over time, due to exposure to the elements, such as heat, light and moisture, thus, they will no longer be as effective as they were, when new and this creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. So, if you have an infection and require an antibiotic, it would best to see your doctor for a new prescription. Side effects to this medication nay include nausea, dizziness, diarrhea and non-allergic skin rash. Is there anything else I can help with?

is it safe to take an expired persciption of the above medicine? from 2007 ## When it comes to any medication I think it is best to not take any chances with the past expiration date (especially in the event that it is almost 5 years old). They MAY still be ok to take if they haven't been exposed to a high amount of heat or various other conditions outside of the bottle, however I am not a pharmacist or MD, so I cannot guarantee if it is in fact safe for you to consume. There is still a high likelihood that it lost a lot of its potency and may be ineffective to the point where it could harm your body by not doing it's job all the way, per say. This is is most important when it comes to expired antibiotics, because the antibiotic may not kill the infection 100% and therefore can ...

Does this drug have a long shelf life? Does it stay good after its recommended shelf life? ## Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim is an antibiotic. How long is this medicine good for. ## Hi rae, According to Roche Pharmaceuticals, the tablets as well as the oral suspensions of sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim both have a shelf life of 5 years. However I'm assuming this is based on their recommended storage temperature being below 30 degrees celsius (86*F). On the contrary, a news article by the LA Times suggests from prior studies that many medications are actually good for up to 40 years beyond the listed expiration date. They also go on to state that expiration dates are often set solely based upon one's own discretion without a specific reason or evidence indicating that it truly has expired. And apparently the reason behind this is that the FDA doesn't require pharmaceutical companies to check how long their ingredie...

Is it safe to take Ciprofloxacin pills white oblong VP 120 in combination with adder all 30mg tablets? also, the Ciprofloxacin expired in 2008. ## The tablets with this marking aren't listed as being Coprofloxacin. They are listed as being a different type of antibiotic that is sold under the name brand Bactrim, which contains the active ingredients Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. It does not get dangerous, past the expiration date, but it does lose effectiveness, which ups the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. I am not finding an interactions listed between it and Adderall, but you should really consult a doctor, or pharmacist to be certain and to get a more recent prescription of an antibiotic, if you need it. Is there anything else I can help with?
