If necessary however, the dosing guidelines state that you can also talk to your doctor about upping the dose to as much as 1 gram a day. So taking 400 mgs once a day still falls under safe dosing protocols. The NIH warns that it may cause nausea, and diarrhea, due to its potency. It is usually most beneficial for the health of your hair, and skin.
