I took sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim 800/160 mg which expired 2 years ago; but i only took half and I have had a headache all day. Can I now take ibuprofen for the headache? My last dose was 4 and a half hours ago. ## Hello, Renee! How are you feeling? I didn't find any problems or interactions listed, but it is always best to double check to be sure. Since the Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim is an antibiotic, why did you only take half of it? Given that it was also expired, that would likely not be an appropriate dose to treat an infection. The FDA also lists headaches as being one of its possible side effects, along with nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. ## How long does it take to start feeling better after taking smz tmp ds 800-160.

my doctor has told me to take two of the sulfamethoxazole-tmp twice a day, and I'm really feeling sick since I've taken the second one, is this not an awful high dosage to be taken. ## The dose of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim largely depends on the type of infection you have and how severe it is. However, these pills you have marked "IP 272" are regarded as "double-strength tablets". For most infections, I found that the dosing schedule was one double strength tablet (800mg/160mg) every 12 hours for roughly 7-10 days; so if you feel like you're taking too much, I would suggest contacting your doctor about this concern. Some of these antibiotics have very harsh side effects and I don't blame anyone for wanting get off of them as soon as possible. ## I a...
