Penicillins (P, PCN or PEN) are a group of antibiotics originally obtained from Penicillium moulds, principally P. chrysogenum and P. rubens. Most penicillins in clinical use are chemically synthesised from naturally-produced penicillins. A number of natural penicillins have been discovered, but only two purified compounds are in clinical use: penicillin G (intramuscular or intravenous use) and penicillin V (given by mouth). Penicillins were among the first medications to be effective against...

I am taking penicillin for strep throat, but i find it very difficult to take one pill 4x a day considering all the time I must wait before and after I eat to take them (It just doesn't quite match up with my schedule and I do not want to mess it up). Can I take 2 pills 2x a day? ## Hello, Streppy! How are you? No, you need to take them as instructed by your doctor. The reason they are spaced out that way is to keep the medication in your body at a constant level to prevent the bacteria from being able to start to grow and proliferate, again. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

im break out if I take penicillin and I was wondering if sulfa trimeth ds 800-160 have any penicillin bc the doctor give me some and I was just wondering if it have any before I take any ## Hi ash, Sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim does not contain any penicillin; nor is it derived from penicillin. It's actually a sulfonamide. So as long as you aren't also allergic to sulfa drugs, there shouldn't be any problems in my opinion. Additionally, my thoughts are that if the doctor was already aware of your allergy to penicillin, he/she probably wouldn't make the mistake of prescribing something that was related to it. Although it is good that you took the time to check because mistakes do happen. I hope this helps!

I sm allergic to penicillin. Does betamox contain penicillin? ## No, this medication is listed as containing Amoxicillin. The NIH lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. However, that does not mean that you may not also discover that you are allergic to it, or other medications. Usually, if you are allergic to one, you'll end up finding more that you are allergic to. Can i apply for RSS. I had this for months.penicillin cream.????? ## Hi jerry, What is it that you mean by applying for "RSS"? I'm sure you don't mean "Really Simple Syndication (RSS)" that websites use to feed headlines and news flashes, but I've never heard of the term/abbreviation being used in medical context... By the way, if your Penicillin cream really is "months old" and you're questioning whether it's still ok to take - an accurate answer would depend upon how it was stored, and whether it already expired. If that is the case and it is expired, then I think your best bet would probably be to get a new prescription, since older antibiotics (with less efficacy) may not fully eradicate a bacterial infection; potentially leading to antibi...

Hi I was prescribed penicillin for tonsilitus i took for 3 days and was no better however had no side effects. I went back to doctors and they gave me clarithromycin instead i have taken 1 of these only and have had stomach pain and diarrhoea. My throat feels a lot better now cn i go back to taking the penicillin? ## Claire, I would advise against that, only a provider familiar with your history should make that decision . Firstly Pennicilin or any antibiotic for that matter SHOULD ALWAYS BE TAKEN TO ITS CONCLUSION UNLESS OTHERWISE DIRECTED BY YOUR PROVIDER. Many side effects are common within this class of drug most resolve rapidly if given a chance. If they become overly bothersome contact your doc for direction.

I'm all out of Amoxicillin and have Pota-V-kin Penicillin V 800000U... Does this cure a UTI? Please help. ## Hi Juno, A study by the US National Institute of Health smugly describes Penicillin's efficacy against UTI's as being a rational choice. Source: NIH / PMC477226 However my research leads me to believe that Penicillin's efficacy may also be dependent upon the strain of bacteria that's causing the infection. Therefore it may be a good idea to have your doctor analyze the bacteria through whatever diagnostics are deemed appropriate, in order to ensure that taking Penicillin is indeed the best approach. If you're unable to get in to see a doctor, perhaps a local pharmacist could at least advise you on Penicillin's standard adult dosing protocols for a UTI....

Hello I have a bottle of penicillin vk 500mg filled 9.29.10. prescribed by my dentist. Are they to old to use, I have a nasty cold. Thank you ## Hi Denise, sorry you aren't feeling well! But no, old or new, Penicillin isn't effective at treating the virus that causes a cold. It is only effective against bacterial infections. Additionally, improper use, such as taking it for a cold could lead to your developing antibiotic resistance, which could be very dangerous if you do get an actual infection that requires an antibiotic. It doesn't get dangerous once it's expired, but it does start to lose effectiveness, so it should just be disposed of properly. Taking it would further potentiate the risk of developing antibiotic resistance. Is there anything else I can help with? Le...

I have an abscessed tooth and got an antibiotic from a feed store called Fish Pen (penicillin) 250MG. The vet said it would be fine to take it. It's an oval pill with the number 520 on it. How often, how many and how long should I take it for? ## Hello, Cynthia! How are you? I'm sorry about the toothache. No, since it hasn't been specifically manufactured for human use, it may not be safe for you to take. The dosage can also vary, depending on the severity of the infection and your response to antibiotics, it can range from 500mgs twice daily up to 500mgs 4 times a day, sometimes even more. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Additionally, whatever caused the abscess will need to be taken care by your dentist, because while an ant...
