Does it work better taking food with it? I had read somewhere that small snacks in between made it work better. ## Hello, Babsy! How are you? No, taking it with, or without food isn't known to alter its efficacy, though it may help prevent some of its side effects, such as the nausea and dizziness it can cause, according to the FDA. Was already on Gabapentin, low dose for Restless Legs when began having Nerve Problems in feet, and increasing unsteady gait. Am not Diabetic, no history of Nerve problems in family Then Neurologist started increasing dose and found myself on 4800mg/day before beginning own research, and found I was taking way more than recommended daily dose. Uncaring Neurologist! Since learning, I have been steadily decreasing dose since Aug/2014. Now on 2000mg/dqy, 800mg in morning and bedtime, 400mg at mid day, about 3:pm but with severe withdrawal symptoms-extreme pain. Have I tried to decrease to rapidly? ## Hello, Donna! How are you? I have been taking gabapentin for almost 2 months now. My doctor gave it to me for migrain head aches, restless leg syndrome and anxiety. I take 300 mg at bedtime every night. About an hour after I wake up in the morning I'm very sick to my stomach which sometimes lasts all day long. I also can not keep my legs still. I bounce them all day. About 3 hours before I go to bed I get very irritated. Once I take my night dose it all goes away. Could this be from the gabapentin? I do also take sertraline 50 mg every morning for my anxiety. ## Hello, Sharrie! How are you feeling? I'm sorry about the problems you're having. It could actually be due to either medication, they've both been known to cause such side effects, as reported by the FDA. However, the restless legs is more ...

Gabapentin, sold under the brand name Neurontin among others, is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used to treat partial seizures and neuropathic pain.[5][6] It is a first-line medication for the treatment of neuropathic pain caused by diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, and central pain.[7] It is moderately effective: about 30-40% of those given gabapentin for diabetic neuropathy or postherpetic neuralgia have a meaningful benefit...

I've heard that gabapentin has a shelf life of five years after expiration. Most pharmacists have to put a earlier expiration date on them however. And even if gabapentin is expired they pose no risk. Maybe they'll lose some of their effectiveness, but that's it. ## Hello, Cindy! How are you? Yes, that information is correct and no, they do not become toxic. Once the pharmacy breaks the seal on the original factory bottle, they are required, by the FDA, to put a one year expiration date on the dispensing bottle, because that is the longest time the manufacturers can guarantee their full efficacy under average storage conditions, in someone's home. The 4 to 5 years is under ideal storage conditions, where they aren't exposed to the elements that can cause degradation,...

I'm being taken off of Neurontin/Gabapentin after seven years. I'm now crying, anxious, and itching all over! I have tried antihistamines and cortisone creams but with no relief. ## yes this is normal I went through the same thing. I was on 3600 for eight years. I weaned off very slowly. I started weening off in 2008. I am now down to 400mg and go down about 100 a week. Its so awful ## These types of problems are normal from a sudden withdrawal of any medication that affects brain chemicals, which is exactly what Gabapentin does, since it was initially discovered as an anticonvulsant. Unfortunately, since you were on it for so long, it is probably going to take several weeks for these effects to wear off, though they should gradually improve and lessen in severity. As to the itc...

Is it safe to take Lortab 10mg 6 to 8 hours apart from gabapentin? I have chronic pain in my legs, back and hips and I also have ressless legs. I was needing to know if it is safe to take these two meds. As long as they are 6 to 8 hours apart. ## Hello, Kindhal! How are you? Yes, they can be taken together, as long as your doctor has prescribed them both for you, there isn't even a requirement to take them hours apart, since they are not in the same medication class. Gabapentin is classified by the FDA as an anticonvulsant that is also approved to treat certain types of nerve pain and some mood disorders. I began taking Gabapentin for terrible nerve pain, tingling, and numbness in both legs, from the thigh to the knee, particularly when I'm lying down. I also feel one arm go completely numb when I keep it raised for any period of time. Example: holding up my Kindle to read, or my phone to play Words With Friends. My internist prescribed it for me after I told him the pain was unbearable, and keeping me up at night. The side effects began once I had titrated up to my full dose of 300 mg., 3 times a day, for a total of 900 mg. The side effects were terrible. The dizziness and double vision got worse and worse with each passing day. Some days I was terribly nauseous, and most of the time, towards evening, I developed a raging headache. There were days I knew it was unsafe to drive. I ha...

Trying to find help to pay for my meds. I take gabapentin 800 mg three times a day and now they just now put me on a spin down where they won't cover my prescriptions unless I spend $1,600 every 3 months on medical. So I was wondering if there's any programs that you know of you can point me in the right direction? Thank you, bye bye. ## Hi Joyce - sorry to hear about your challenges covering the Gabapentin costs. Truly a sad thing to hear as noone should have to extend themselves financially to pay for a drug that helps them! Well, I imagine that you may have several options. One could be trying out a rx discount card like this one this site offers. It's free to use, and in some cases it can really offer a good savings on prescription refills. Another route would be to try ...

How long do the withdrawals last coming off Gabapentin? I've been taking 3600 mgs. per day for about two years. I have cold sweats and itching. I'm changing over to Lyrica, this is my second day. Is it going to be a problem quitting Gabapentin? I want to quiet cold turkey. I just need to know will it be a problem and how long it takes. Thanks ## Talk to your doctor. He (or she) will probably titrate your dose down fairly quickly. What do you take gabapentin for? I take 2700 mg a day for nerve pain. I have cervical spinal stenosis, but have no side effects. Lyrica is a controlled substance and is rather expensive. It's also addictive. Just do what your doctor says and you'll be Ok. ## Took me 4 weeks to withdraw from gabapentin. I know it takes a long time for gabapentin to get out of your system and I can't be too safe when mixing medications. Thanks in advance to any help I get. ## It should be okay to take them together, if they have both been prescribed for you. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and mood changes. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Will I get the same level of pain relief from stopping norco 10-325 mg and starting 300 mg gabapentin? ## If it were me it wouldn't, but everyone's different. How are you? You should have this checked out by your doctor to be safe, there are many things that could cause chest pain and some of them are very dangerous, such as heart conditions. The typical withdrawal effects of Gabapentin are listed by the FDA as possibly including nausea, dizziness, fever, chills, rebound pain, depression, anxiety, seizures and diarrhea. as soon as I got off double doses of gabapentin(300x6), I got nausea every day for weeks. I have acis reflux, so we thought it was that; could this be a reaction to total withdrawal? ## Yes, if you did a sudden withdrawal, rather than tapering the dose, or even if you tapered, but stopped at a dose that was a bit too high for what your body could handle, it's possible that it could have caused it. Learn more Gabapentin details here. Have things improved yet? With the acid reflux, it's quite easy for your gastric system to be upset and set off balance, so it could even have been a combination of both factors.
