My ex-husband has had 5 lower back surgeries and has permanent nerve damage. He also has rods and pins in his back that one screw pushed on his spinal cord and had to be removed-lots of scar tissue. He's having a neurologist for many years. My ex has been on fentanyl 100 patch putting a new patch every 48 hours and oxycotin 5 was 6 times a day now he has been cut to 4 a day. His doctor won't give him any higher dosage and in extreme debilitating pain. He was in pain management years ago, but the doctor changed his percocet he took then and put him on morphine. He took to many for the week he was on it. It wasn't working and let pain management doctor know it and was thrown out of pain management. He of course is addicted. His meds of course aren't working very well any m...

I have just switched from oxycodone to fentanyl patches. I will be withdrawing from them following sugery. any suggestions as to which is easier to withdraw from? Thanks!!! ## Well, the Fentanyl is actually much stronger than the Oxycodone, a 0.025mg dosage of it is equal to 5mgs of Oxycodone, so it is going to be the harder one to withdraw from, if it is stopped abruptly. However, the other fact of relevance is how long you will be using it. If it is only for a short period of time, them the withdrawals may not be too rough, though they may still be annoying. Has your doctor provided you with any advice? ## i have been on fentanyl for a long time. prior to this was on a bunch of oxycodone. to give you an idea i was taking anywhere to 3 or 4 of the 80s per day and 5 or 6 of the Roxi 30s...

Seven years of back pain with long history of muscle relaxant and more recently oxycodone and lorazepam. Docs finally did MRI and found Spondylolisthesis Grade 3-4 with bulging disc and appears vertebrae have already fused. Still being worked up by Neuro surgeon. Pain mgmt. just switched me from 10mg Vicodin every 4 hrs to 25mcg Fentanyl patch every 3 days with 7.5 Vicodin every 6-8 hrs for breakthrough. Started patch last week. First seemed to work okay but over the last two patches breakthrough pain has increased with increased pain down my legs. I get sweats then chills with pain in all my joints, arms, legs, hands, feet. Seems increasing my Vicodin and taking it more frequently is the only thing that relieves it but sometimes need 30mg of Vicodin in a short time-frame. Not sure if t...

Are there any prolonged side effects after 10 yrs of treatment? ## Hello, Shellbee! How are you? Long-term side effects usually entail the possibility of liver damage, but that would be detected via blood work, if your doctor is monitoring you and checking occasionally. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I was just taken off of 50mcg fentanyl patches/72hrs, and put on oxycodone 20mg extended release with hydro/APAP 5mg/325 acetaminophen for breakthrough pain and I'm going thru withdrawl as well as being in pain. Everything I read here gives me the impression that this shouldn...

Can I take oxycodone and dilaudid and be on the fentanyl patch at the same time safely? ## Hello, Hauler! How are you? Has your doctor prescribed all of these? It's odd to be on 2 regular release medications, as well as the time released patch. Usually, just one regular release is prescribed for breakthrough pain. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Taking too much can create the risk of overdose, especially if you aren't opiate tolerant. ## Was on Dilaudid for hip replacement. Horrible drug to get off of. Am in withdrawal now. Tried Fentenyl patch and that was just as bad. ## Trust me, you don't want to. I'm t...

I'm currently taking dilaudid 4mg & a fentanyl 25mg patch. All I can say is that it seems to me that the hydromorphone "dilaudid" isn't effective as my oxys Irs or my morphine Irs used to be. I was wondering if anyone thinks that taking oxy is better than dilaudid ## I am on the same two meds fentanyl 25 & dilaudid 4 & the dilaudid just isn't helping me. I have so much BT pain it's unbearable some days. I was also checking on here if anyone else could answer the same question. " which Med is better than dilaudid and what strength should I be taking? I have taken oxycontin and oxy ir and morphine sulfate ir and Ms contin but never with fentanyl patches. I'm going to be speaking with my Dr tomorrow and I desperatly need some advice. Please help!...

My insurance will no longer pay for oxycodone or oxycoton. So what should I get ## Has your doctor suggested anything? There is a time released formulation of Morphine available as a generic and name brand, MS Contin: There is also a patch available, as both name brand and generic, that contains the narcotic Fentanyl: Since they are both narcotics, the side effects would be similar and can include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and dry mouth.

IS THERE ANY THING STRONGER THAT MY PAIN MGMT DR CAN PRESCRIBE ME THAN A 30MG ROXY, he also prescribes 200mg of ms contin ## Hello, Dave! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in pain. There is a time released form of the Oxycodone available called Oxycontin, you could speak to your doctor about switching to that, since it would be stronger than the MS Contin. There are also patches available that contain the potent narcotic Fentanyl, it's the strongest one available. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. To replace your regular release medication, if you prefer to do that, there are higher doses of Roxicodone available, as well as several other alt...

I get 6 oxycodone pills a day and also wear a 100 mcg/hr fentanyl patch. I have been on same meds and dose about two years now and very tolerant to this combo and dose they are becoming ineffective for my pain and back trouble. I also take flexeral and baclofen for constant muscle relaxes as my spasms almost never stop. also. I take trazodone for sleep...I can't sleep but an hour to two hours at a time ever and feel like I'm going crazy family treats me like a criminal already for just having these meds as well as the pharmacy and everyone that knows what I get/take. idk I used to get valium as well for anxiety but it did nothing to help after a few months and I just asked to stop. when I did stop taking them I had these brain zaps like every two minutes that would last a few se...

I am currently prescribed fentanyl 25mcg and hydromorphone 4mg aka dilaudid. Ever since I was switched to dilaudid I have been having severe BT pain and some not so good side effects like bladder issues that I informed my PCP and after seeing them 4 times they were telling me I might have to see a Urologist...smh here it's a side effect of the hydromorphone... anyways I was wondering if anyone knew the difference between oxy ir or morphine ir to replace the dilaudid and what mg I should be switched to. ## Hello, Jess! How are you? I'm sorry that you're in pain. The only Oxy IR dosage that is available is a 5mg capsule, there others are all either regular release or the extended release. This medications contains the active ingredient Oxycodone and you'd need 10.67mgs of ...

Was on 360 30mg Oxycodones a month for 5 years. Doctor has now switched me to 240 30mg Oxycodone and 25mcg Fentanyl patches. I seem to be hurting worse since going on the patches. I go back Thursday for refills should I ask him to change anything? ## Hello, Blazer! How are you? That's very unusual, that would be 12 a day. 240 is still 8 a day, which isn't the typical amount prescribed, either. Fentanyl is much stronger than Oxycodone, but it is a time released patch, so it will not hit you all at once, like the Oxycodone did. The FDA classifies these medications as narcotic analgesics, so they have potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. You may be dealing with some rebound pain from lowering yo...

I have been taking 60mg morphine sulfate er for 10 plus years with 30mg oxycodone for breakthrough pain relief. A friend of mine who also has severe pain is on fentynal patches and I was wondering which one is better? What I am taking now is beginning to not work as well as it use to. Help! ## Fentanyl is the most potent opiate available, it is over 81 times stronger than Morphine. The FDA warns that it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, dry mouth, and constipation. However, it depends on which medication works best for you and what your doctor feels is safe for you to try. Are these the only medications you are currently taking? ## Fentanyl 100mcg along with 30mg roxicodone 4 x per day works well. Everybo...

I was on liquid Methadone for chronic pain for years and while on waiting list to switch to a new Pain center, I was weaning off methadone rapidly at 2mgs a day from 120 to 38mg. I was also on 20 to 40 mgs a day oxycodone for breakthrough pain. Now, last month, my new doc put me on 25mcg/h patch. Yesterday, he informed me that I am now ONLY getting pain management from him (understandable) and cut me off and did not prescribe any more oxycodone and I was to stop at 38mgs methadone. Bottom line, will a 50mcg/h patch I started today be enough for my pain and withdrawals? I am scared. ## Did you discuss your concerns with him? The Fentanyl is a very strong narcotic, over 80 times stronger than Morphine actually, but while it can handle pain very well, you may still experience some breakthr...

So, this is my situation. I was on Fentanyl 75, and oxycodone 15 for breakthrough pain.my pain stems from a bad back which led me to have three back surgeries and still have inj's. radiofrequency ablation's with not much success. I just moved back here to AZ from Colorado and saw my previous p.m. Dr. Because of Swimming I've had a couple patches falloff and even lost one in the pool. So when I went to the p.m. Dr. he wouldn't help me wean off fentanyl cause I was 10 days early on the script. Even taking my oxy 15 I had horrible withdrawals. Headache, ears ringing, restlessness and worse to me restless legs. My p.m. Dr. said he would switch my patch to something different and wean me down but not until a months time. After complaining and explaining the pain that I was go...

I've been on oxycodone for almost 2 years, following a bad automobile accident. I became dependent and was taking upwards of 75-85mg per day. I'm finally on a step-down regimen, starting with 60mg per day for a week, then 50mg a day/ per week, 40mg per day/week and so on, until I finish 10mg per day for a week. I foolishly took more than I was supposed to this week (had a death in the family that put me over the edge). I can't fill my next Rx until the end of this week and was petrified of withdrawal, so I slapped on a 25mcg fentanyl patch. It's been 25 hours and I developed a terrible headache. Last dose of oxycodone was yesterday afternoon, 5/325. Put patch on at 10pm. Just took patch off at 11:30pm tonight and was wondering - if I start taking my oxycodone again tomor...

here guys i found something as I am also going thru what u are all going thru. projects.propublica.org/checkup/drugs/2954/states/nevada I need a dr who will prescribe, fentanyl patches 100mg, 14 a month, soma 240mg 4 a day, and oxycodone 30mg 4 a day, xanax. this has always done well for me too, i hate that other ppl have abused them. I feel that ppl who dont have problems with them should continue to get them with no problems. ## Unfortunately, doctor's hands are tied on these matters, due to the new regulations that were set forth by DEA last year. They are restricted on how much they can prescribe of any given controlled substance and why they can prescribe it. I understand your frustration, but you're not going to be able to go into a new doctor and ask for specific medicati...

Thoughts I have cronic pain in my ankle and have have 5 surgeries to try to fix it with nonluck. Also what other long and short act meds should I look up that are stronger than what I am currently taking ## Hello, Mtothej! How are you? I'm very sorry that you're in pain. Demerol isn't actually a good choice, because it's much weaker than Oxycodone. For each 20mgs you take of Oxycodone, you'd have to take 300mgs of Demerol to be equivalent. There are higher doses of Oxycodone available, including the time released Oxycontin that's taken every 12 hours. There are also patches available that contain Fentanyl, ...
