Can You Switch From One Blood Pressure Medicine To Another

I have been taking medicines for BP. The medicines is changed from one to another like Ramipril 5mg, Losarton Sodium 50mg, Telmisartan 40 mg, etc. I want to know is there any problem in changing the medicines or one should I stick with only one medicines. Please advise. ## Yes, you should find one that works for you, without causing a lot of side effects that make you miserable and stick with it. When you keep switching, your body doesn't have a chance to get used to any medication and for it to reach its full level of effectiveness. Additionally, stopping one abruptly to switch to another may cause a rebound effect, which means your blood pressure and heart rate can bounce back up, so you kind of negate any effect the medication may have had. What medication has your doctor recomme...

Having been on Irbesartan (300mg) and Nebivolol (10mg x2 a day) I have now been prescribed Amlodipine for the last 2/3 weeks. Apart from the swollen ankles, along with stiffness and a tight feeling which GP mentioned was a possibility of taking the latter, I am now suffering horrendous cramps in my left thigh and also severe muscular pain in the side of my neck. My blood pressure has certainly improved with the Amlodipine but the disturbed sleep and agony of cramp/muscle pain is becoming unbearable. Should I carry on persevering or see the doc? ## Hello, Sophetta! How are you? Yes, please see your doctor. Some of just can't tolerate Amlodipine, I had similar problems with it and had to switch to another medication. There's a chance things may improve, but in most cases with this...

Hello. I have been on Lexapro 20mg since July. At my last check up my blood pressure was extremely high and I had gained 17 pounds. My doctor did blood work which came back perfect. She determined it was my Lexapro and changed it to Trintellix. I started it a week ago. I've experienced the nausea but it isn't unbearable. Today, especially this afternoon, I am so grumpy! Agitated. Do you think this is normal? ## Yes, those symptoms can be normal, if you abruptly stop one medication in this class and start another, according to the FDA. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, weight changes, and dry mouth. How are you doing now? Has there been any change? Generally, I've found most side effects to last about 3 weeks, or so.

The problems you are experiencing can be side effects of this medication, if they are severe, you should talk to your doctor, because this may not be the right medication for you to use. Many people run into these types of problems and have to stop taking it or switch to another drug. I'm sixty five have been on Metoprolol tart 25 mg Myl twice a day ,every now and then I get light headed and feel unblanced. ## Welcome to our forums and you've come to the right place, because I had quite a few adventures with that medication myself! Metoprolol is a beta blocker that is used to help treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. As to the occasional dizziness, yes, it can cause this as a side effect, which is more than likely due to orthostatic hypotension. Is it happening when you move suddenly? If so, then this is probably the cause, it has been known to cause this in some people. If it's putting you in danger of falling or anything, then you should contact your doctor, as you may need to switch to a different medication. Another factor that co...

I WAS ON LISINOPRIL 10 MG DAILY, THE DOCTOR SWITCHED TO METOPROLOL 25 MG. IS THERE ANY BENIFIT? ## They are two different types of medications, though they are used to treat the same health issues. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor. Learn more Lisinopril details here. And Metoprolol is a beta blocker. Learn more Metoprolol details here. Sometimes, one medication works better for someone than another, so if your blood pressure was still a little high, your doctor may just feel that you should try something else. Did they say why they made the change? ## I am a 39 year old female that is 135 lbs. they have me on 25 mg of Metoprol twice a day, 40 mg of Lisinopril, and 25 mg of Hydrochlorot a day. body muscle cramps ## Metoprolol is a medication that is used to treat diseases of the cardiovascular system, most commonly high blood pressure. And yes, not only from the medication information, but from personal experience, I can tell you that it can cause those symptoms. They are, however, considered serious reactions that you should not tolerate, along with any stomach pain and hair loss, you should contact your doctor immediately. Have you called them, yet? You will probably require a switch to a different medication. If the Metoprolol has been working for you, otherwise, there is another in the same class that is known to cause very few side effects. It is what I switched to and, even at a higher dosage, I have had no problems using it and I was found to be extremely sensitive to ...

The doctor recently took me off metoprolol because it was discovered that I have asthma. She replaced it with diltiazwm which caused my heart rate to increase to 133 and upped my blood pressure. Now I'm back on the metoprolol until I see my doctor again. Is there another medication for high blood pressure that you could recommend to replace metoprolol? I was also prescribed ventolin for the asthma. ## Hi, Lin! How long did you take the Diltiazem? Your blood pressure and heart rate normally would elevate for a few days, when you first switch from one medication to another. The 133 is rather high, but did you call your doctor about it. yet? Since the beta blockers can cause trouble with asthma, you are going to have to switch to something else, however, only your doctor can help you fi...

hello I need to know if this RX that I am on is considered under the "beta blocker" catagory or not? As I was on another form of blood pressure med that was under the beta blocker form. Can you let me know asap. thanks. ## please check out the side effects, I am trying to get off this med!!! ## Yes, Metoprolol is definitely in the Beta Blocker drug class, it is considered a selective Beta Blocker. What problems are you having with it? Some people are very sensitive to these medications and can suffer severe side effects from them, such as: nausea, dizziness, headache and abdominal pain. I was on it for a short while and had to stop taking it and switch to something else, due to the severe problems it caused me. If you are looking for an alternative to control your blood pressure...

I have been taking Benazepril 10 mg for a while, and my doctor has changed me to Lisinopril but the new dosage is 40 mg, is this dosage comparable to the Benazepril or is this an increase in dosage? ## From what I can tell, it's a slight increase and the equivalent dosage would be around 25 to 35mgs, however, the switching of the medications also has to be taken under consideration. When you stop one of these abruptly and switch to another one, even one that's still in the same class, as was done here, there can be redound effects to your blood pressure, making it climb higher, so your doctor may have increased the dosage slightly to try to help control this. These are both ACE Inhibitors, so the side effects should be similar and may include: nausea, drowsiness, headache and dr...

I'm taking Metoprolol (50mg) daily. I've experienced a noticeable measure of ED. I wasn't aware of this side effect when I started taking it. Is there another Beta blocker equally effective that does not cause any degree of ED? ## I am afraid that this can be a potential side effect of almost all blood pressure medications, so there is no way to tell you that any one will not cause any degree of ED. I recently had trouble with Metoprolol myself and my doctor recommended I switch to Carvedilol, it seems to cause less side effects and problems for people that have had trouble with Metoprolol. It is also more powerful, so you usually require half the dose of it, that you did of the Metoprolol. More information: Have you tried asking your doctor about alternatives?

I have been taking coveram, but was then changed to amloc and perindopril, and since then I have had erectile dysfunction. What can I do because I'm thinking of stopping these blood pressure medications? ## Hi David, Another David here (Lol) - Sorry to hear about your side effects after switching medications. From what I've researched, a "loss of interest or pleasure" is listed as a less common side effect of Perindopril; which sounds exactly like what you're describing. Personally, I think you should do what feels right for yourself after weighing out the pros and cons of taking these medications (or perhaps just Perindopril in particular). There are numerous blood pressure medications and natural alternatives on the market for effectively managing hypertension. How...

I just started taking this med. about four days ago. I have been experiencing extreme diarrhea and stomach cramps. Is this one of the side effects? does the dosage need to be changed? or is another hypertension medicine recommended? Thanks in advance for your help. ## Dee, it sounds like you are experiencing side effects from the Amlodipine (muscle / stomach / headache are listed as possible adverse effects). Often, anti-hypertensive medications act as diuretics as a way of reducing blood pressure (hence your body expelling more water than usual). Your potassium levels may also become elevated. I recommend reporting this to your doctor since they may in fact need to change your dosage or switch your medication (based on what they know of your medical history). Hope this helps! ## i just...

And yes, it can cause shortness of breath in some people that take it. What happened with this Steve? Did you end up changing medications, switching doctors, or perhaps both? Since taking this pill for high blood pressure for 6 months now my neck is very red & blotchey like sun burn & i was wandering if I should switch to another pill? ## Hi Carl, It sounds as if you may be having an allergic reaction to this medication, unless you are taking other medications that might be the culprit? How long have you been dealing with this? If it persists for longer than a few days, I definitely recommend calling your doctor and asking him if he knows what might be the cause. I have read that flushing (warmth, redness, or tingling under your skin) is a "less serious" side effect of the brand name Lotrel; which contains amlodipine besylate and benazepril hydrochloride. Therefore, it may just be a side effect of your medication. You can learn more about thi...

If so, yes, you may need to add another medication, or switch to a different to help bring it down as fast and as safely as possible. The NIH lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Are these the only medications you currently take?

Can these be taken together in the evening? And will it be effective for 24 hrs? I'm too sleepy during the day!! ## Hi, Margo! You really should check with your doctor, before changing to taking them at night. It's really going to depend on your blood pressure levels and heart rate, as well as the symptoms. Usually, it's preferred that they be taken in the morning, to help control your blood pressure and heart rate during the times of day that you'll be most active and therefore experiencing the most fluctuations. But if you are severely drowsy from them, they may allow you to switch to taking them at night. Another alternative is splitting up the doses, so you take part of your dose in the morning and then the rest in the evening, which could lessen the side effects. Ma...

I was taking lisinopril 5mg for high blood pressure and had severe stomach and back pain after taking the med for 3 weeks. My MD switched me to amlodipine 5mg and the same side effects after 2 weeks. Since they are both calcium channel blockers, should I ask for a different class of drug to control my blood pressure? ## Hello, Susan! How are you feeling? These are not both calcium channel blockers, Lisinopril is actually an ACE inhibitor. It is also normal to experience side effects for the first 4 to 5 weeks you are taking a new medication, but they are typically transient and go away with time, once your body adjusts. However, if your pain is that severe, then yes, you may need to try yet another class of medications to lower your blood pressure. One option would be to try one of the ...
