Klor-Con Overview

The chemical compound potassium chloride (KCl) is a metal halide salt composed of potassium and chloride. It is odorless and has a white or colorless vitreous crystal appearance. The solid dissolves readily in water and its solutions have a salt-like taste. KCl is used in medicine, scientific applications, food processing, and used to cause cardiac arrest as the third drug in the "three drug cocktail" for executions by lethal injection. It occurs naturally as the mineral sylvite and in combin...

## I had been taking POTASSIUM CL CAP 10MEQ ER. CVS Caremark recently re-filled the order and switched to POT CHLORIDE CAP 10 MEQ ER. They said it was less expensive and just as effective. I was not advised until after the switch was made. My question is what is the difference is these two Rxs? Thank you. ## There is no difference, just like they told you, it is exactly the same, the only change is they are made by different manufacturers. Is there anything else I can help you with? ## i was taking POT-chloride 10 Meg now my DOc change me to KLOR-con M20 whats the difference ## i take potassium and feel sick mostof the time what causes this

i have an ileostomy , it has been blocked or stopped up a few times before requiring hosp . stay, should i take klor-con m20 ? will it plug up my stoma ? ## My husband has one of those. It's actually a BCIR Barnett continent internal reservoir. He uses a catheter to empty his internal pouch. He had a traditional colostomy for 20 years until he had this surgery in St. Louis. Now it's only done in Cali and Florida. He also has Crohns and takes Klor kon 40 mg 1x a day. We want to switch to OTC because we recently r having insurance problems.

Klor-con, potassium

Con you tell me how many bananas I have to eat to get the same amount of potassium as one klor-con m20 tab? ## Hello, Frank! How are you? From what I can find, they estimate approximately 1 mEq per inch of banana, so you'd need to eat 20 inches of banana for each tablet you are supposed to take. It would likely be easier to just take the tablets, rather than eating bananas all day, every day. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you for the information. I was curious. That is a lot of bananas especially in light of the fact I'm not that crazy about bananas. The pill, though, is a bit hard to swallow. Again, thank you for the effort. Frank ## A FAIRLY SMALL BANANA IS APPROX. SIX INCHES SO 3 OR 4 BANANAS IS NOT ALL THAT MUCH , MUCH BETTER THAN THE PILL IN MY OPINION

Why is the generic Klor-Con not in a powder?!?
2 Replies RSS
The generic Klor-Con is not in a powder. Now my grandmother has these pills that she cannot take b/c there is now a generic and she is on Medicare. She cannot crush them b/c she is 97. Medicare wants $1200 to get the regular powder version. This is BS. ## Hello, JJ! How is your grandmother? I'm very sorry about the problem that you've run into. Yes, it is very expensive, even for the generic, to be honest. Have you spoken to her doctor? They may be able to advise you of an alternative, such as taking several of the over the counter potassium supplements that are available, or a special diet to raise her potassium. The FDA classifies this medication as a supplement and it is known to be very harsh on the stomach, so it should be taken with food. Alternatively, some blood pressure...

potassium CL 20 meq er tablet

My 1 year old son got ahold of my mother-in-law's potassium CL 20meq er tablets that expired 8/31/2013. I think he only took one. Should I take him to a doctor? ## How is he doing? Did he suffer any adverse effects? There is no danger from them being expired, however, there can be problems if he gets too much potassium, it can cause heart and blood pressure issues. The only other typical side effect, as listed by the FDA, may include nausea due to the potency. Any time you are worried that someone may be in danger, especially a child, you should contact poison control or your nearest emergency services.

lasix, KLOR-CON M 20meg

Doctor has RX'd both lasix and KLOR-CON M 20meg for swollen ankle. Is it necessary to take both medications? Can I just take the lasix and rely on the potassium I obtain through the foods that I eat? ## Hello, Buckeye! How are you? It would be best to take them both, if your doctor has prescribed them both. Diuretics, such as Lasix tend to really sap your potassium and it could be dangerous, if it drops too low. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Lasix as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache and increased urination. The Klor-Con is known to cause stomach pain and upset, so it is best taken with food or a snack. Is there anything else I can help with? ## The advice in your reply sounds logical and I will follow it by taking both meds. thanks, Verwon. An extensive sea...

potassium CL ER 10 MEQ Capsule, Klor-con 10 MEQ Tablet
1 Reply RSS
Are the Potassium CL ER 10 MEQ Capsule and the Klor-con 10 MEQ Tablet the same thing? The Klor-con 10 MEQ Tablet is yellow and round with KC 10 on one side and nothing on the other. The Potassium CL ER 10 MEQ Capsule is blue, oblong-shaped, with AMNEAL on one side and 542 on the other side. ## Yes, they have just been manufactured by different companies, which is normal, when a medication is available as a generic. The FDA classifies this as a supplement and it is known to cause stomach pain and upset, so it should only be taken with food. Is there anything else I can help with?

Expiration Date For Potassium Tablets

i have some Klor-Con 8meq tablets that are 3 years old and I want to know if it is safe to take them. I am currently on this medication again, (being given with my blood pressure medicine) and I wanted to know if I can take the ones I have on hand. ## Since they are that old, there's likely been a good bit of degradation, so you probably won't get the full dose, if much at all. How did you have them stored? If it somewhere such as a bathroom medicine chest, where they were exposed to heat and moisture, that would really accelerate the degradation. Learn more Potassium details here. ## I have since gotten a new prescription because I felt they would not be as effective. They had been stored on the shelf in my linen closet. Thank you for your reply to my post, but better to be saf...

Uninformed Nurses

my Dr Rx 20 mEq tablets with my Lasix 40mg everyday. The mfg companies need to rethink their making of such a ' large and hard to swallow tablet'! I have choked numerous times and have had to be given medical help! Recently my RN crushed my tablet While I was in the hospital and I was found unresponsive. I have chronic abdominal pain 24/7, gastroparesis, gerds, and IBS. Remember the majority of K+ users are the elderly who have a difficulty swallowing!!! Nurse Jackie ## I don't know why you think the crushing of the medication had anything to do with you being found unresponsive. Potassium is not supposed to be crushed because of its corrosive properties. It can cause esophageal and stomach lining corrosion, the same way it burns if infused too quickly through an IV. KLOR-CON 10 MEQ hard on stomach. One every other day?
3 Replies RSS
My rx is round with KC 10 stamped on it. Can I take one every other day so my stomach doesn't feel bad all the time? ## Hello, Kelly! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having. It's best to follow your doctor's prescribing instructions. Have you tried taking it with food, rather than on an empty stomach? That usually helps. As a matter of fact, when I was in the hospital and had to take it, they wouldn't give it to me without a meal or small snack. The FDA classifies this as a supplement and please be careful not to exceed your doctor's dosing, either, as too much of it can be just as dangerous as not enough. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thanks for your response. my blood test showed a potassium level of 3.5. Is that just low a...
