Will Doxycyline Treat A Crowned Tooth Infection

I'm in afghanistan working on a project and can't make it home for another 3 weeks. My crowned tooth has become infected and has my jaw swollen. I have taken 3 doses of doxycycline and waiting to take my 4th dose (Every 12 hrs). I have yet to see improvement and the pain can be immense. I have to take (4) 200 mg ibuprofen every 4 to 6 hours to ease the pain. I rinse with salt water and peroxide on a continual basis. When can I expect to see results? Medication is limited and I'm trying to wait until I'm able to go home to see the dentist. As soon as I step off the plane, I'm heading straight to the dentist. Please advise.

Hi, Chuck! So very sorry about the dental infection, I know those can be quite miserable.

Doxycycline is an antibiotic, so it can help, but the problem is that this tooth has a crown on it. It's basically holding everything in, it doesn't have anywhere for the infection to drain. That's also why the pain is so severe.

Usually, if an antibiotic is working, there will be no worsening after the first 24 hours of taking it and you should see improvement after 3 days.

However, as I said, a crowned tooth like this could continue to be a problem, since it cannot drain.

Is there anyway you can see a dentist sooner?

Thanks for replying. Well since I emailed last, the swelling and pain has decreased. I am on my 5th day taking the doxycycline and I only take meds for pain on occassion. I will continue to take the meds for about 21 days, maybe less. I'm not able to go home until the 19th of August. I will continue to rinse with salt water and drink plenty of water.
