Yutopar Aka Ritodrine (Page 5)

This drug was used for women going into pre-mature labor. It was used to stop the contractions. Unfortunately it had major side effects on the babies. This was an experimental drug used from 1980 -1990 and was then discontinued. I was given this drug and my daughter was born 6 weeks early, had her by c-section. I begin to notice around 12 yrs old that problems were arising in her mental health, still not realizing that this drug played an important factor. I have found many women that this to has happened to, and I'm still looking for more families that this has effected. It is devastating and a nightmare for my daughter who is now 30 yrs. old. If you have any information I would really like to visit with you about your child. Thank you for reading this, we need to band together for our kids.

In 1981, my wife was put on oral Yutopar for 10 weeks when she began pre-term labor at 26 weeks gestation. (Previously she had lost 3 pregnancies, including twins at 25 weeks. The twins were born alive, both very small, and both died in less than 24 hours.) At 36 weeks, the doctor ceased the Yutopar, and 6 days later my wife labored and gave birth to a girl who spent 4 days in NICU due to TTNB (transient tachypnea of the newborn). After release from hospital, our daughter had a healthy infancy and childhood. She grew up well advanced in learning and IQ, started reading at age 3, graduated HS and college with honors, earned a Masters degree in theology, and teaches in three languages (plus Anglo-Saxon) at a classical Christian school. At age 35, she has never shown any signs of developmental delay of any kind, physical, mental, emotional, or psychological.

After losing four children to pre-term labor, we saw Yutopar as part of God's answer to our prayers. Though the temporary side-effects my wife suffered were many, we considered them minimal compared to the opportunity to actually bring a child home from the hospital.

All this having been said, we grieve deeply for those (apparently many) whose children have been adversely affected by this drug, and all the more so in view of the entire lack of problems our daughter experienced. May God bless and give grace to you all.

I have not discussed Yutopar with my children. My oldest has Anosognosia (lack of insight for illness/psychosis) along with many mental and emotional issues. I don't want to risk him coming across anything that I might post. I would prefer to talk to other moms via email or phone.

I often wonder how many suicides in children and young adults can be due to this drug. And people in this age group that have committed crimes and mental illness was determined to be the reason, could this drug play a part? Seems like in so many of these situations, the person is in the 20-30 age group. Could some of these people suffer from the affects of Yutopar given to their mothers for preterm labor? Of course, we'll never know because the damage that this drug caused has been swept under the rug and the makers of the drug have no one to answer to.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was just ONE lawyer in this country that would listen to our stories and take on the people responsible for our children's mental health issues!? Psychiatrist, psychologist, counselors, hospitals, rehabs, medications and lawyers are not free and their mental health issues aren't temporary, they are for LIFE!

Doctor John, you are the first person I have ever heard without a complaint about Yutopar. Your daughter truly sounds like she was a blessing from God. You speak of her as any very proud father would. Her list of accomplishments were impressive. You mentioned a "few' side effects of the drug your wife may have suffered, but they were all worth it because the result was your beautiful daughter. It's good to have at least ONE happy ending for one woman who had taken Yutopar. :)

It caused physical problems with some mothers, but the problems with the children born to those women seem to suffer emotional and psychological problems from puberty on, some very serious.

Hi, I would love to speak to someone about this. This drug is still widely used in hospitals throughout China. I has on the highest legal IV dose 24 hrs/day for several weeks. What are the common issues for mother and child later down the road?

Please read everything you can it starts affecting the child around age 12 - 14 at the start of puberty.... This drug was taken off the market here in the U.S. in the 1990's please take care of yourself and I pray your child was not affected.

The problem is there is so little information out there. I was living in China where it is still widely used. I was given it in 2011 in IV form at the highest possible dose for 24 hours/day for several weeks. Do you have a list? What did you start to notice? I sometimes think my daughter is a bit autistic and I get asthma symptoms occasionally but never did before 2011. Thanks :)

My heart stopped twice after delivery due to pulmonary edema, a side effect I have just learned of yutopar (took it in 1988). My twins symptoms have been depressive disorder, debilitating anxiety, panic disorder, inability to consider consequences, etc. One twin's symptoms started at age 10; the other around 15. Both now at 28 receive regular therapy and are on multiple medications. Both struggle to cope with life.

"inability to consider consequences"...I see that in my daughter even aged 5. I can now see how that can become a big problem when she's older. Do other people have this symptom and any examples? Thanks

Perfect description of my daughter. She started self medicating at 15 and has been doing so on and off since. Leah is going to be 33 on April 5th. She is a beautiful person who has suffered for years. Social , mental, and addiction issues have encumbered her beautiful soul. As a parent, you suffer right along with your child. My husband, children, and myself will always be there for her and provide her with "healthy" support. It can completely consume you and we've no where to turn. I wish I had a better response but this is our life.

Wondering how many (if any) of these young adults have had brain imaging done? MRI, SPECT scan, PET scan? If so, anything unusual found? A spot was found on my son's MRI. Doctors didn't seem concerned, although they couldn't explain what caused it or how long it's been there. If there are others that have had imaging done and results found anything unusual, please let us know. This may be a way of connecting Yutopar to the hell our children have suffered.

I located the name of the University in the Netherlands that had conducted a study of babies born to mothers on yutopar. The study traced children just until they were elementary age and found no harmful effects. The problems all of our children are suffering, however, start at puberty. I sent a request to an email address I found for the University asking to be connected with someone who had been part of conducting that study because I had some questions. My intention was to suggest that they do a new follow-up of those children now that they are all older. I received no response.

Thank you for the work and time put into finding the University. I asked my sons' psychiatrist to do a little research on Yutopar, with the hopes that he could find a connection with some of his other patients in that age group. If possibly their mothers used Yutopar as well. He said he would, seemed sincere, but next visit he brought it up and said he hadn't had a chance to do it, but assured me that he would. Been back a couple of times since then and it wasn't mentioned. So...I guess it wasn't important enough to spend time on.
Am I nuts to think that psychiatrist would be interested in finding out if any of their other patients that are in that age group with similar symptoms are suffering from the effects of this drug? I've told every "professional" that he has seen about taking Yutopar during preterm labor and not one has taken it seriously, except this doctor, I thought.
My son continues to get worse every day. No luck with medications so far. I'm terrified that he'll give up and hurt himself. The psychosis is slowly killing him internally. I've only seen psychosis mentioned in a couple of posts on here, so that must not be a common symptom. He is also suffering from severe depression, anxieties, body pains and many of the other symptoms that others are experiencing. We need someone to take our concerns about this drug seriously.

Mig my daughter is the same way I never know how she is doing til I here her speak...its either up or down no in between moods....its hard to live with and harder to watch....I also told Jens psych. Dr. And his answer to me " well thats the past and at this point I have to find a medication to Treat her" not a bit interested.... I'm blown away about the lack of concern these Dr.s have for these kids....what the hell....no one cares in the medical field and no one has the time to investigate this...

My son has psychosis and is untreated because he literally feels every side effect of any medication. He isn't afraid to drink beer though. He believes he was tortured by the government and they implanted him with a cortical implant. He has visions popping up in front of him. He loves to share his story with people and I can't convince him otherwise. He is currently living on SSI and whatever supplements I can give him.

Hey Pat,

I've posted here several times under a different username. My son has been self medicating for years and the doctor "thinks" that could have triggered the psychosis. But the reason for self medication was due to the mental and emotional problems he has suffered from for all these years. His symptoms sound identical to the last persons post about her sons psychosis. Only thing that sets him apart from others is that he had several serious head injuries within a year. I've researched this and have found that psychosis can occur years after head injuries. So that's the direction I went when this first started. Finally saw doctors about head injuries, but they were of very little help. In the meantime I started thinking about the Yutopar and did some searching on that topic and found this website with many families suffering from this. He has seen many doctors, counselors, therapists and been on so many medications and so far nothing has helped. I was so happy when the newest doctor said that he would look into Yutopar (he had never heard of it) that I almost cried. I might mention it again, but I now feel like he isn't interested in getting more info either. We are always told by every doctor that no matter the cause, the treatment will be the same-drugs. None of those have helped and he has tried many. So if those aren't working, wouldn't you think that they'd be interested in finding out why they don't, especially when they all insist that meds are the only treatment for this?! At a complete loss of what to do next. His health, both physical and mental are slipping away. He is not able to work, has no social life and angry as hell that this is happening to him. Once again I'm pointing to Yutopar as the cause. This can't just be a coincidence that all of our adult children are suffering from mental/emotional issues after the use of Yutopar for preterm labor. It can't!!!

My son has similar delusions. He has episodes that are frightening and asks why won't you believe/help me. He suffers many side effects from medications as well, that's why we keep trying others. Also, none have helped with the psychosis. We've been told that will never go away completely, but meds should help him to deal with them - NOPE! He also drinks, whatever he can get, not just beer. Says it's the only thing that helps, but it's just bringing on new problems to deal with. Alcohol and the meds he is on are not a good mix.
Curious, I hope you don't mind me asking, have you discussed the Yutopar with him? And does he have insight (aware that this is an illness) at any time? Because of my sons delusions, I haven't mentioned it. That would be like adding fuel to the fire. The doctor thinks the psychosis is a combination of head injuries and drug induced. The drug use started when the emotional and mental issues started, it was his coping mechanism. At about the same age as everyone else's started whos mothers were given Yutopar for preterm labor.

Yes, I told him about the Ritodrine and that it appears that he is not alone. He went on a big story about EMD dumps and how anti psychotics only paralyzed the frontal lobe which have nothing to do with EMD. I don't know what he is even talking about but describes pyschosis as the same thing that happens when you are near death and go somewhere else. The bottom line is he kind of ignored what I said and moved to a new story.
