Valium Withdrawal

My dad is in the hospital and he has been taking 10mg of Valium for 40 years. Nurses haven't given any to him for three days, he only takes at HS. He is 86, fell and is confused. Every time he goes to the hospital, he gets confused. He is normally very sharp, well read and can discuss and debate topics. They put him on Ativan, because he has a half pint of whiskey per day. I am very concerned about the nurses forgetting his Valium. Confusion is worse, but sleeping all the time. Ativan is tid.

Hello, Ruth! How is your dad doing? Has there been any change?

If he's experiencing some withdrawal, since Ativan is much milder than the Valium, that could explain the confusion and extreme drowsiness. He may also experience rebound anxiety, depression, fever and chills.

However, if he's in the hospital they are aware of any possibly problematic symptoms to watch for and it will likely be just a matter of time, before things improve.

Have you spoken with his doctor?
