Has anyone used the new SUPREP kit before a colonoscopy?

Would like any comments about taste, ease or side effects.

Thanks!

Thanks for all the info Gemeniguy! First time I used Suprep so have nothing to compare it to. Things went well but tastes horrid.

Sorry for shotgunning all these posts out but I keep remembering bits and pieces that might be helpful. I specifically asked my gastroenterology nurse when the Suprep would kick in. She said it's impossible to predict because everyone's digestive system is unique. Based on that, don't expect your experience to be the same as others. It could be radically different. Ten years ago when I did the Fleet Phospho Soda I believe my last dose was around 7:30 PM. At midnight I began to panic because nothing had happened by then. I went to sleep expecting the colonoscopy to be cancelled. But I woke up at 2:00 AM and it began to kick in big time. By 6:30 AM it was all over. Colonoscopy worked well at 1:00 PM. With the Suprep, it was entirely different. Kicked in less than an hour each time. Another thing the nurse told me is do not deviate from the times they tell you to take the two doses. They are specifically set to those times for a reason. You help yourself by following your instructions without deviation. But you can improve the odds of your overall success by going beyond the call of duty, so-to-speak. Even though I could eat solids up to 7:00 AM the day before the colonoscopy, I went entirely liquid after the previous evening meal at 6:00 PM. No solids, not even small snacks after that. In addition to the solid foods you absolutely must avoid per the instructions, there are other foods that can also help if you avoid them. You can find what these foods are by keying on colonoscopy preparation sites. Some of the foods to avoid are whole grain and oatmeal. Even though these are healthy foods, they tend to stick to your colon and it helps to avoid them. You want to put the odds on your side to the maximum extent possible. You're on a mission when you do colonoscopy preparation. Be a good little soldier and follow all orders. I look at the colonoscopy as an adventure trip of sorts and definitely existential in nature.

Here's a few statistics:
(1) My gastroenterology nurse told me that Suprep was the most tolerable of all the clean-out options which they used. I don't know what the other clean-out options were but I'm assuming they involved drinking some large quantity of something. (2) Out of 147 reviews of Suprep on one of the drugstore websites, it received an overall rating of 8.4 out of a possible 10.0 (3) On another website which claims it looks at reviews from all websites, it received a 7.0 out of a possible 10.0. No doubt there are some real horror stories, but over a large sample of people Suprep comes out pretty good. Nothing is guaranteed, but if you haven't taken it your odds are fairly good of it working for you based on the statistics. I'm a retired defense industry engineer and am wired for the number scene. The rating of 8.4 gave me confidence that it would probably be OK. The only thing I have to compare it to is the Fleet Phospho Soda. Assuming the Fleet Phospho Soda is a 10.0, I give the Suprep a 9.0. Taste between the two was about the same. Maybe the Fleet was slightly better, but not by much. The only reason the Suprep got a 9.0 instead of a 10.0 was that it took about a total time of 6 minutes to down the two doses of Suprep and maybe 10.0 seconds to down the two doses of the Fleet. Also, the Fleet was done the same day and the Suprep required two days. But I'm told the two day split dosage is the wave of the clean-out future because it works better then only a single day dose, regardless of what's used. The first dose of Suprep is the major battle and the second dose is the mopping up operation. Possibly a poor choice of words by using the phrase "mopping up" but there is a bit of truth here. The second dose comes out largely water and it can drip on the floor off of you easier than the day before. Yeah I know. A lousy attempt at some gallows humor, but it doesn't hurt to at least try to have some fun with the colonoscopy adventure.

This was my second colonoscopy. First one was ten years ago. Used Fleet Phospho Soda at that time but it was subsequently taken off the market. The Suprep had a strong black cherry flavor. If I didn't know what it was and someone had told me it was a non-carbonated black cherry flavored soft drink, I would have believed it. I wasn't crazy by the taste but I wasn't repulsed by it either. Chilled the Suprep/water mixture before taking it and used a large straw. No problem in sipping it down in less than 3 minutes. Also no problem in drinking down 32 oz. of Gatorade within an hour. Didn't drink any liquids for 4 hours prior to taking the Suprep in anticipation of having to down 48 oz. of liquid in one hour. Maybe a little bloated but nothing too bad. Took the first dose at 4:00 PM and started on the pot in less than an hour. No cramps but did get a little light headed at first. Completely finished up on the pot around midnight. Took the second dose at 6:00 AM. Identical experience to the first dose. Started on the pot in less than a half hour this time and completely finished up around 9:00 AM. Colonoscopy at 1:45 PM went well. Specifically asked the doctor if the Suprep did an adequate cleaning. His exact words were "It looked good from my end". Will insist on nothing but Suprep on next colonoscopy 5 years from now. After reading all the horror stories about Suprep, this went way too easy. But others may have different experiences. Reality is that no one knows how they will react to it until they try.

It seems that many have had a bad experience with Suprep. Can anyone who has had a bad experience with Suprep tell me what they have used in place of it that is more tolerable? I have an upcoming colonoscopy. Any information about a better substitute for Suprep will be appreciated.

I really don't think there is a tasty alternative, but going thru other websites I found some people taking pills with loads of water. Perhaps dr.'s are getting kickbacks for prescribing this vomit. I split my doses into 1/3's with extra water and chased it with fresh squeezed lemon juice and barely got it down. As for the guy who said only 4 trips to bathroom?!!! Not believable for this is my second colonoscopy and I am currently sitting on the toilet for nearly 5 hrs straight!!

Did the liqid diet day b4, took first bottle as instrucked. Got it all down within first hr. Its very hard to tolerate toward the end of the dose. I was not able to get the two 16 oz. doses of water in within the next hr.
Next morn took 2/3rds of second dose and threw up some of it. Couldn't finish off the other third. The stuff is horrible to tolerate, I tried very hard to keep it down. Seems like whats coming out is yellow. Don't know if The dr will do the procedure

Dougie Quick said: "That was exactly my experience! I could never do that again! Or it would have to be life or death it was so putridly AWFUL!! Just AWFUL!! I seriously don't know how I did not vomit the second bottle!"

To get around that, I used a mint mouthwash (Scope or a generic). After drinking about 1/3 of the first dose of Suprep, I IMMEDIATELY rinsed with the mouthwash. That was very effective at taking away the rancid flavor of the prep. Repeated that for the next two-thirds of the prep, and it really wasn't that bad.

I am scheduled for a colonoscopy tomorrow morning at 9am. The instructions I received from the doc was to take the 1st bottle mixed with either water, sugar-free Crystal Light lemonade, or sugar-free 7-Up. I went with the Crystal Light. The taste wasn't that bad - very sweet and very salty, but the lemonade kind of covered it up. I drank it slowly, over about 30 minutes, then took a hour to chase with two more 16oz cups of lemonade. 45 minutes after pulling the pin on this gut -grenade, the urge hit and the first trip took care of any real solid wastes present. No cramping or bloating. Not really anything crazy, just a forceful movement. The 2nd trip though, about 30 minutes later, had me in amazement at the sheer volume of mostly clear liquid that came forth, and the force and constant flow of it. A few minutes before trip #2 launched, there was some mild cramping. I think I actually laughed out loud at what was transpiring. 30 minutes later, trip #3 yielded about the same results as trip #2, just not as voluminous and dramatic, and there was much, much less residue. I am now just sitting here typing this, wondering if there will be a trip #4. I do feel a little bloated and there are some rumblings in the gut, so I may stay up a bit to make sure I don't have some late-night emergency. I have to get up and drink round #2 at 5am tomorrow and then off to get the probing done. I will follow up with results and impressions.

Suprep tastes horrible. If bowel is running clear after the first dose, do you have to do the second? I will be extremely reluctant to have a colonoscopy again if Suprep has to be used. Also, what is the grape/berry flavor that people are talking about? The stuff that I was given is very salty and smells/tastes like musty mold.

Have you tried other methods? I used this for my first colonoscopy prep and I had no adverse effects. Lucky, I guess. Yes, it does taste bad but I would rather drink those two bottles and the water chasers than drink a gallon of that "sweet" stuff that my mother used and gagged with every swig. Everyone has different tastes and different reactions. Don't judge the people who wrote positive reviews. I never heard of Suprep until my doctor prescribed it to me. Hopefully your colonoscopy went well.

I can't help but to suspect that some people were engaged to post postitives for this product. That is a terrible thing to suspect, but when I look at how many positives vs negatives for these posts, something STINKS! Trust me, This stuff is VOMITIOUS bad....it is SO SO bad! I could never do it again it was so discusting and plain almost impossible to force myself to drink without puking! ! Or it would have to be life or death it was so putridly AWFUL!! Just AWFUL!! I seriously don't know how I did not vomit the second bottle! IF people actually did post good review for this product as a lie for money or to build stock price up or whatever ....SHAME ON YOU for messing with people's lives!

Took the first bottle at 6pm (mixed with water) and drank the 2 16oz water glasses. Face turned red as a beet and was hot. Felt like I had sunburn and didn't feel well. Very chilled. Stopped running to the bathroom before 11:30. Don't remember the time as I had fallen asleep. Next morning called the doctor and was told not to take the second bottle due to my reaction. Colon was clean enough from first bottle to do the colonoscopy with no issues.

Just came home from colonoscopy after using suprep. Everything went well, but the first dose of the prep took 8 hours to begin cleaning me out. The second dose worked much quicker..had bad chills after drinking each dose..and a congested nose that I had to keep blowing in between bathroom runs..other than that..I lived through a successful procedure.

What do you do if you've taken the first dose of surprep over a 20 min period and then vomit what seems like almost the whole 16 oz. My colonoscopy is at 7:30am and I'm worried that I won't be clear for the morning. Anyone else have this issue?

> "... and immediately chugged the required addition two 16oz of water."

That's fine if you can tolerate chugging 32 oz. If not, it's perfectly all right to take it slower. I drank the 16 oz. glasses of water over a period of one hour -- 30 minutes for each glass. It's all going down the same pipe, so you don't really gain (or lose) anything by chugging.

This is my fourth colonoscopy, so I've had a chance to try different approaches. For me, taking it slow makes the prep a lot more tolerable. And fast or slow, the result will be the same.
