Quiting Methodone (Top voted first)

Updated

I have started loweing my dose to come off Methadone. I am on 58 mgs I got on Methodone to quit talking pain meds .The clinic I go to did not want me to go down they told me I am supposed to stay on it a least 9 months I told the it's a tool to help me stop taking pills not a life time use .Well they where upset I believe it's because if the money my counselor will not speak to me and has bit talked about takes out .I'm glad I don't live far from the clinic . My question is do they have a right to tell me I can get off Methadone I m thanking they don't I'm self pay I'm not in any state funding so I believe if I pay I should be able to get off any time I want to .

It is your human right not to be pressured into medication if you feel you can handle the withdrawals. They have no right and an obligation to offer an alternative. Point this out. Methadone is not good for you, non synthetic opiates are far less toxic and Dihydrocodeine may be ideal to reduce far better than methadone which withdrawal can last 3 months. If you have no abuse problem but rather a dependency problem what they are doing is wrong. You may show them this.

Hi Nora:
I live in Canada so I'm not sure where you live and what the laws are. I'm thinking they want you for nine months to do a proper taper. What happens with the opiods is they mess up you hormones pretty severely.

The laws in Canada and the U.S. says if you tell a doctor to stop treating you they have to listen. If you want off the opiods do it under supervision and I can see you are frustrated, but please be aware withdrawal symptoms are a direct result of your hormones going crazy.

Going off or titration should be done slowly to allow the body to return to normal slowly. Putting yourself into withdrawal could cause seizures and you might feel like you have a million paper cuts all over you and then someone placed you in a pool of alcohol it's unbelievable and not something you want to experience. Please listen to your doctor and use the time to get off the meds the right way. Hormonal imbalances so severe can cause lung cancer, heart attack and disease. Be smart and go slow and do it supervised and safe.

Let me tell you as a Friend of course the program is going to tell you it's not safe 4 you to slowly lower your Dose to hopefully get off methadone,it's all about the money.I remember when I first started on a program i was informed when I'm ready to start decreasing,do it slowly and have a plan, what I mean is even if you have to dislocate( geographic move) then u do it,people places and things. Slowly remember we didn't get hooked overnight.Good luck
