Prg 3350 - Colyte
UpdatedThe pharmacist said it was okay to add a teaspoon of Crystal Light or a few drops of lemon juice to the solution - but online instructions warn against adding any flavoring to the solution. How would the flavoring be harmful???

I'd like to hear a formal statement on this issue. The pharmacy is telling my patients they cannot add ANYTHING to their colyte solution... but I have always instructed them to add 1 packet of Crystal Light for flavoring if they prefer. I do not believe the sugar-free, flavoring w/ artificial sweetener changes the osmotic properties of the solution, which would be the concern if patients added sugar-containing or electrolyte-containing flavored solutions, which would make the solution less effective or potential harmful depending on the components added.
