My wife has trouble swallowing this capsule. Can I take it apart and crush up the inside and mix it with something then give it to her.

I am currently taking the same prescription, and I break apart the pills inside and take them in much smaller pieces. I have trouble swallowing them as well. They are virtually tasteless and seem to work just fine using them that way. I have been taking it for a couple of days, and have seen results in doing so taking my prescription this way. Hope it helps!

To clear up a few things in case others are wondering about the same questions…

The capsule with MYLAN 3422 on it is a 100mg Nitrofurantoin capsule, but it is not time released. Thus, unless you've been specifically instructed to take it whole, then it is safe to break apart to make it easier to swallow.

This antibiotic may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

The elderly may be more prone to its side effects, so it should be avoided in this population and a different antibiotic should be used.
