I was given this for diarrhea in Peru but I got better before I took it. What is it and is it safe?

Do you mean Nifuran? (active ingredient Nitrofurantoin)
This drug is not manufactured out of the U.S.
Nitrofurantoin is used in treating urinary tract infection. Like many other drugs, it is often used against E Coli.

No, he didn't mean Nifuran. He meant Nifurat and it is Nifuroxazide (INN) which is an oral nitrofuran antibiotic used to treat colitis and diarrhea. It is sold under the brand names Ambatrol, Antinal, Bacifurane, Nifrozid, Ercefuryl, Endiex (CZ, SK, PL), Pérabacticel (FR), Pentofuryl (DE) and Septidiaryl. It is sold in capsule form and also as a suspension.
