Can taking naltrexone cause a false positive for oxycodone in a urine test? ## No, no, no, you will have severe withdrawals! Naltrexone will push out the opioid from your system and you will end up clean from it, but it will be heavy. Be prepared if you decide to do this. ## Yes. I had firsthand experience with this. Unfortunately in my case I had to spend two months in jail after 2 failed (pos for oxycodone) immunoassay urine tests. When (finally!) sent to a lab for GC/MS they came back clean. The first dirty was while I was taking 50mg oral naltrexone, the second ten days after I'd been given the vivitrol injection (325mg I believe). ## I'm on naltrexone n I just tested positive for oxycodone. I had them send it to the lab. That should show I wasn't taking oxys right??? ##...

My boyfriend was on subutex, the recovery center stopped him cold turkey and he went without anything in system for weeks. We finally got into recovery center again and he was put on Naltrexone 50mg. He took the meds and started acting angry and aggressive. He got a bad headache. He didn't take it yesterday or today because now he feels sick. ## Those are possible side effects of this medication, according to FDA studies. He may also experience dizziness, dry mouth, and stomach pain. How is feeling, now? Has there been any change? Is he on any other medications? ## You should tell your boyfriend that if he went weeks with no subutext and he only took it for opiate addiction he shouldn't even be sick anymore, but try suboxone, that's what I've been on for years. ## When I...

I have been prescribed this drug on the theory that it will block alcohol effects hence I will stop drinking because I will feel no highs..(drunkeness) from the alcohol. So far I have taken this drug for 10 days and as yet, I have not experienced this. I still feel drunk after drinking. Does anyone know how long it will take before the drug takes effect and stops the effect of alcohol? ## I'd like to know, too... I have been taking NAltrexone for two days and my urge to dring had reduced. I drink more slowly, and spaced my drinks with vegetable jucie in between... let's see how I go tis weekend... it will be the test ## I've now been on this for 8 weeks, I spoke to my alcohol worker about this and he explained that I will always feel drunk with alcohol however the aim of the...

I got the vivitrol shot and drank a lot then I took 2 of my naltrexone pills because I felt bad for drinking. 5 hours later my muscles are twitching a lot and my legs are cramping is this a normal side effect (should I ride it out) or should I go to the hospital. Could it be too much naltrexone? Or is my body withdrawing from the alcohol. ## I experienced no side effects from Naltrexone and have not had the vivitrol shot. It was my understanding that it was one or the other - the month-long shot or the pills. Perhaps you had too much in your system. Dehydration and lack of electrolytes like sodium and potassium definitely can lead to muscle cramps. I advise some sort of sports drink and keep the fluids coming, since your nervous system being in high gear keep chemicals like adrenaline r...

Can u flush vivitrol from ur system? It's making me very sore and tired all day, but I still can't sleep either. I had it one week ago and I can't take it anymore. ## Hi Joz, Sorry to hear about your situation. According to the FDA, Vivitrol has an estimated elimination half-life of 5 to 10 days (at which point only half of the dose you took would theoretically be out of your body). However, the FDA notes that this time frame is dependent upon the erosion of the polymer... I would also conclude that a variety of individual factors may heavily influence whether you're closer to the 5 day mark vs 10 day mark in its half life. Lastly, the FDA states that the elimination half life of Vivitrol and its metabolites occurs primarily via urine; so I'd agree that drinking lots...

I have recently stopped taking Percocet. It's been 4 days and the withdrawals are horrible. My doctor prescribed me 50 mg of naltrexone to help. He said its fine to start taking them right away but I see a lot of sites say 10 days to 2 weeks after your last Percocet. Is 4 days enough time. Shouldn't he know what's best? ## Yes, he should, since he is a doctor. However, taking it too soon could cause you to go into dangerous precipitated withdrawals. The NIH lists those withdrawal effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, seizures, rebound pain, and diarrhea. Have you started taking it, yet? ## Hi there, my last dose of 5mg oxycodone was at noon on a friday. Took 50mg of naltrexone sunday at 6pm. Took away my fatigue and letharic feeling. Feel great. Restless...

My adult son took 1/4 of a 50MG naltrexone last night and is going through precipitated withdrawals now. He asked me to post the following question. What would happen if he took the another 1/4 later in the day? He is bound and determined to making his doctor's appointment tomorrow afternoon for a vivitrol shot. ## Hello, BuckOwen! How is your son doing? He'll likely keep experiencing severe withdrawals. However, the thing you need to be aware of is that precipitated withdrawals can be very dangerous, possibly life threatening. He could even suffer seizures from them. Other typical PW symptoms, as listed by the FDA, may also include fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhea and insomnia. What did his doctor tell him to do, before starting the shot? ## Long ago but I hope he is well. Yea...

Hi I am was a long time opiate patient and drinker. I was totally clean for a year but lately have relapsed here and there and drinking 150mg of methadone like once a week. I usually never experienced any withdrawals so I figured I'm good. Anyway I by accident took 2 50mg of naltrexone thinking they were percocet 10s yesterday after coming home real early after drinking quite a bit on a empty stomach and took them within an half hour of partying, and maybe 2 days from taking opiates. I have never been so sick even when I weaned myself off roxys, suboxone, 80mg oxys, and methadone which I would switch on and off if my scripts ran out, etc. Has anyone else done such an idiotic thing and how do I flush this out of my body? I can't eat or drink because it burns my stomach so bad and...

I have a friend who is fearful of taking the second injection of naltrexone due to the sleeplessness she experienced. My question is, does this side effect diminish with the 2nd injection or does it remain 'about the same'? ## In theory, side effects tend to lessen in severity and eventually go away entirely, once your body gets used to a medication. However, everyone is different, so there is no way to be sure. The FDA lists other typical side effects as possibly including dizziness, weight gain, anxiety, diarrhea, and irritability. She should consult her doctor, they may have ideas to help prevent this from happening, or they may be able to provide her with some type of sleep aid. Is she on any other medications?

I didn't know there is a 12 month implant of naltrexone. How would one go about getting it ## I've heard from someone that naltrexoneimplanteurope provides it, it's something like refindyour way. Try to google. ## Hi D, I'm not sure where you're located, but I just wanted to offer an additional option for other readers. In the US there's also The Coleman Institute (TCI) that provides patients with 12 month Naltrexone implant therapy. Their toll free number is 877-773-3869. Perhaps you could contact them for more specific details. I can also confirm that the detox center post #1 mentioned does the same thing. However, since they are based in Europe (and if you live in the US), pursuing treatment through them may turn out to be more trouble than it's worth, at ...

Hi, I'm in a really bad situation. I have to get the vivitrol shot in 8 days. I used subutex today. I'm so scared of being extremely sick. If I drink a lot of water in the next 8 days will it help clean my system out some so maybe I won't be as sick??? ## Hello, Tinkerbell! How are you? You do need to be in full withdrawal from any opiates, before you can use the Vivitrol. However, after 8 days, in theory you should be fine. It usually only takes a couple of days, for most people, but it would be best to inform your doctor to be safe. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Vivitrol as possibly including nausea, dizziness, administration site soreness, redness and headache. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I'm taking naltrexone after a detox and used opiates....

Hello, I took 50mg to help me stop drinking alcohol and/or drink less. The first time I took it I became very dizzy, irritable and had a throbbing headache. I definitely didnt want to drink but I also don't want to feel like that again. Is it possible that the dosage is too high. Should I try taking a lower a dosage? Its been five days since I took it and Ive tried drinking and can only have one or two drinks and then I don't feel like drinking and thats just from that one 50mg pill. Im happy that Im not drinking much but I dont want to go through that again. I am not on any opiods. ## Hello, Night! How are you? All medications carry the risk of causing side effects and that sounds like what you experienced. However, they are usually transient and will wear off in a few weeks, o...

Several years of pain meds for back and neck joint deterioration. My Dr. has told me I will soon no longer receive pain meds. Due to a Government Mandate I will go thru a 90 day period where the meds will be slowly reduced. I will be given Naltrexone to help with with withdraws. Is this true? Is our Government sticking their nose into private people's quality of life? How is it possible to assume my joint deterioration problem has gone away? It just doesn't make sense to me! . ## No, that is not actually true. The DEA has issued more strict directives that doctors must use, when prescribe controlled substances and, after that 90 day period, they must have a valid explanation for why the are prescribing such medications... unfortunately, this has caused many doctors to decide to ...

I was recently prescribed 50mg Revia. I'm currently in the 25mg period with 4 days to go until I begin the full dosage. Before this, I was taking 125mg L-dopa/velvet bean extract (800mg) plus 400mg 5-HTP on a daily basis for my depression. It does WONDERS for my depression but now I have to take this opioid antagonist and I'm wondering if there will be a drug interaction even though I'm taking dopamine. The first night, I took everything together and experienced dizziness, tiredness, insomnia, confusion, racing-thoughts, muscle spasms and increased thirst. I stopped taking the supplements and just take the Revia at night and haven't experienced anything but increased thirst and awesome sleep. I don't know too much about neurotoxicity but I know enough to know it'...

I have been court ordered to take the vivitrol shot & I'm about to get my 4th shot. I happy to be clean but I don't think the shot has anything to do with my sobriety. I am also diagnosed with hepatitis C. Since taking the shot I am always tired & I have ongoing cold symptoms. I also have something oily & very stinky constantly coming from my pores. I'm worried. Should I be? I'm afraid that the shot could cause me permanent damage. ## It can cause those types of symptoms as side effects, as reported by the FDA. You may also experience nausea, nose bleeds and delayed orgasm. It can cause hepatic problems, so your doctor should be doing regular blood checks to keep an eye on your liver function, especially with the hepatitis. Have you told him about your sympto...

Hi, I just had the 12 month implant inserted; for opiates. Can you please tell me if I drink will it interfere with making it less effective, especially in the first month when the capsule is growing over it? I have a wedding today. Could you please let me know? I don't have a drinking problem. I'm a 33 yr old woman. Thank you ## More than likely, you should not even feel like drinking...I have been on it for about a month and just the thought of having a drink makes me sick. This drug is a life saver!! ## Hello, Lois! How are you? Tom is correct, you will most likely need to stay away from alcohol, this medication is also used to treat alcoholism. Trying to drink while having the implant could result in severe nausea, dizziness and stomach pain, as listed by the FDA. Is there a...

Has anyone been prescribed both and drank at the same time? I did and I can usually put down 12-15 beers, I've finished 3 and feel all drunk or dizzy or something ## Hello, RR! How are you? Naltrexone can help reduce alcohol cravings, but it won't actually stop you from drinking, neither will the Lexapro. While it can worsen the side effects that the FDA lists, such as the dizziness, drowsiness, headache and nausea, you can still drink if you choose. It's just like quitting smoking, you have to help the medication work, it can't do everything on its own. How long have you been taking them? ## I have been on Naltrexone for about a month now and has absolutely no desire to drink. However, I do know if I wanted to have one or two I could do it and stop there, but I just don...

I am currently on suboxone and have been on it for 7 years. I'm interested in switching to vivatrol (naltrexone). What I would like to know is can I switch without having to wait 2 weeks ?? I was a long time opiate patient and suboxone saved my life, but people have started stealing suboxone and this has happened to me. I figure they can't steal an inj. so maybe the shot would be better but I'm scared of the 2 week wait I keep hearing about. ## Hello, Pam! How are you? Due to the fact that there is an opiate in the Suboxone, yes you will most likely have a waiting period, before you can start the Naltrexone. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Is there anything else I can help with?

Hi I was currently on Suboxne 1 mg I was told I can start naltrexone I took them 12hrs apart my last dose of naltrexone was 48hrs ago I went into horrible withdrawal. I want to start my suboxne back is that OK? ## As a nurse who has worked in drug and alcohol rehabs since 2001, I would say that you were given very bad instructions. You should wait at least 2 weeks after your last dose of Suboxone before you start the Naltrexone.
