New On Lexapro

Updated

I have a history of anxiety/depression. After 2 life changing events I fell back into this funk. Was put on Luvox and it worked fine. Then had another loss with a company rightsizing and was laid off and have since moved back into home with parents (I am 40). Without insurance started going to local psychiatrist who decided I was Bipolar. To make long story short..........wrong diagnosis. After a month and a half on Latuda which has sent me spiraling down even further into depression and hopelessness, my parents got involved and with blessing of my psychologist (who also didn't think I was Bipolar) we weaned me off of Latuda and onto 10 mg Lexapro after much research. I've been on for 2 weeks and have suffered the nausea, dizziness and loss of weight and right now after 2 1/2 months of side effects, I just feel I'm always going to be this way. Can't go back to Psychiatrist(have since found out a lot of negatives on him) I was going to and in the process of going through local mental health, so really not under MD care right now. Just scarred and don't know what to do and this mental health process could take 4-6 more weeks and I don't know whether I can handle that. Please give me some insight, if any.

Hello, Kris! How are you?

You've only been taking the Lexapro for a couple weeks? It can take 4 to 6 weeks for it to reach its full efficacy level in your body and for the side effects to taper off. If they continue after that, then it may not be the right medication for you, but I am thinking you'll likely start to see some improvement very soon.

Its normal side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight changes.

I've been on Lexapro (which my parents and I chose electively after having been wrongly diagnosed with wrong medication) 4 wks waiting to get into a doctor to monitor and decide whether I'm on the right dose, since I left the doctor who had me on the wrong medication to begin with. I'm on 10 mg and still feel despondent and hopeless. So don't know whether right dosage or right medication at this point. Very frustrated. Still having anxiety and using 10 mg of valium a day to help with that until I see the doctor for the first time next week.

Thanks.............6 wks next week on Lexapro. No nausea anymore, but still despondent and hopeless feeling. Still on 10mg and have first app't with doctor next Thur. I'm hoping I'm not on the right amount and an adjustment will help. Has been 3 months of hell trying to get into a doctor.
