Metronidazole Lasting Side Effects (Page 56)

Updated

I have been taking this medication for 7 days and off of it since a week and still have severe side effects, abdominal cramps, severe headaches, dizziness, unsteadiness... How long is it expected to last? It was prescribed with Ciprofloxacin to me and I take Entrophen on a regular basis...

Thanks for the reply Erin. It's difficult to find information on metronidazole in comparison to some other antibitoics. Some adverse side effects of metronidazole are not even mentionned on the list yet they are possible adverse side effects of other antibiotics. It's very confusing.

metronidazole has given me really bad anxiety attacks, so bad it effects my whole life, I have had to see a psychiatrist and am taking escitalopram, has anyone else suffered these symptoms.

Hi Vanessa, I had anxiety but I think it was due to the other symptoms and insomnia.

Vanessa, anxiety is one of the most common side effects for this. Let me guess--obsessive thoughts, constant panic attacks, lowered stress threshold (where little things like getting into an argument with someone can leave you much more upset than you normally would be).

I bet it's also causing sleeping problems, sensitivity to light and/or sound, and possibly a strange, pressure-like sensation in your head (either your whole head or the back of your head). Any of those on the mark?

Vanessa I also had horrible anxiety. Just like Erin says...she describes it perfectly. I didn't think I'd ever get off the couch. Plus, I had a strange "down-ish" feeing that's hard to describe. Like I was terrified of being optimistic, and I'm normally a very optimistic person. I am still having sporadic feelings of anxiety but not constant like it was. I had Flagyl in February and took only one course of 7 days. Please don't despair....I didn't think it would improve but it has slowly. I'm glad you are seeing someone. I didn't but this forum has helped me so much!

I posted in here a while ago after taking metronidazole and thought it was healed had a two week break from symptoms, but I have taken a huge turn for the worse. My whole body went numb about 2 months ago and although I have regained most of the feeling I haven't regained sensations in my fingers, toes, soles lips and nose, I have severe joint pain in wrists and back. I have intense muscle aches when I try to do physical things (mostly when moving things). I still having the pulsing sensation like most of you in head back stomach etc but I don't notice it much anymore because that was the first symptom I had when I started noticing the side effects back in Feb/March. I also recently got a cold about 6 weeks ago and the cold went away but when I had the cold all the way till today I have a clicking noise in my ear (joint maybe?) that wont go away and I fear it will never go away. Any similar experiences with my symptoms?

Randolf
I have been to so many doctors, neurologists and so on. Have done so much tests. About The pulsating, The doctors only looked at me like im crazy, so i havent talked about The pulsating thing in my stomach, back, chest, throath and head anymore . my guess its The vagusnerve that is effected. It goes through The head, down The throath, then The heart and down The stomach. Thats The only explanation i have to this. Flagyl can damage so many nerves in the body. I know, because i have neuropathy because off it, and alot off other things. I hope your pulsating goes away. Mine comes and goes now.

Please go online and do a search on vagus nerve and how to help it. Here is the source that talks about how to help it.

" Humming: The vagus nerve passes through by the vocal cords and the inner ear and the vibrations of humming is a free and easy way to influence your nervous system states. Simply pick your favorite tune and you’re ready to go. Or if yoga fits your lifestyle you can “OM” your way to wellbeing. Notice and enjoy the sensations in your chest, throat, and head...

Conscious Breathing: The breath is one of the fastest ways to influence our nervous system states. The aim is to move the belly and diaphragm with the breath and to slow down your breathing...

Valsalva Maneuver: This complicated name refers to a process of attempting to exhale against a closed airway. You can do this by keeping your mouth closed and pinching your nose while trying to breathe out. This increases the pressure inside of your chest cavity increasing vagal tone...

Diving Reflex: Considered a first rate vagus nerve stimulation technique, splashing cold water on your face from your lips to your scalp line stimulates the diving reflex. You can also achieve the nervous system cooling effects by placing ice cubes in a ziplock and holding the ice against your face and a brief hold of your breath...

Connection: Reach out for relationship. Healthy connections to others, whether this occurs in person, over the phone, or even via texts or social media in our modern world, can initiate regulation of our body and mind. Relationships can evoke the spirit of playfulness and creativity or can relax us into a trusting bond into another... "

I know its Hard with The anxiethy. I have that to very bad since flagyl. I have had anxiethy before, but never felt this horrible anxiethy like this. For some ist gets better with time. The only thing is time.
About The pulsating, it can gets better over time to. Im sorry to say this, but you need to be patient. It can take many many months. I still have it 1 year and 9 months out, but for me its not 24/7 anymore. It Comes and goes
What bjh wrote, was about The vagus nerve. It can be that, that causing The pulsating, because that nerve comes from The brain down The heart and down The stomach. Thats The only explanation i have. That it is The nerve causing that. Because i have pulsating in the head, my heart, throath and stomach and even back. And what bjh wrote, is things to try to get The vagus nerveto get better, things you can do. I dont know if it can help you, i guess only time. But i know its Hard, i live with alot since i took flagyl, so i know its not easy. I hope The pulsating thing starts to get better for you soon.

Randolf.....the vagus nerve connects all those areas that you are experiencing the pulsating sensation....if it was damaged or injured by the med then the connection between it and the brain may be damaged. try some of those exercises I copied and pasted.....some or all and do it a lot. I was advised to do some so I used to sing as loud as i could at a high pitch....when i was driving because no one could hear me. LOL
It did help.

yes and humming....go back and read the post where I copied and pasted the info. copy it to a document and go over it more to figure out more. My nutritionist had me gargle as loudly as I could and a couple of other exercises.. don't need to do them any more now.

Did your symptoms subside completely ? What did the pharmacist say ?

Yoyo, if you are asking about the vagus nerve and the exercises? If so, yes, most of my symptoms went away... but it also took physical therapy and some yoga to get all better... but this would not be something one discussed with a pharmacist as they would have no clue.

Thanks BJH. Any updates as to how everyone is doing ?

I'd like to hear if recovery is possible after a few months.

I heard some people said it comes in waves and then others had it clear up sooner.

yoyo, mine took about 4 months with physical therapy and yoga, etc... and working on the vagus nerve myself.
