Does anyone know if Compounding Pharmacies will make smaller doses in order to facilitate getting off these drugs? I am taking 10 Mg Fluoxitine and need to get off and the withdrawal is awful. I want to slowly reduce the dose however I just learned that the manufacturer is discontinuing this dose and only selling 40 mg going forward..

It's funny (although it has been awhile) that most people hear have the problem where they were switched from Teva to Northstar and found a problem. Mine is the exact opposite was switched from Northstar to Teva and don't feel anywhere like I used to feel. Luckily, I called walmart and they have northstar 40mg again.

I found by breaking up the pill or capsul and diluting it and taking smaller doses each week will help. Dilute with cranberry juice seems to help taste

Does anyone know how I can get northstar fluoxetine? It's the generic that has worked best for me and I've called every single major pharmacy in my area (Salt Lake City) and none of them carry it - help?

Walmart Pharmacy here just switched from Northstar to Aurobindo. I took the one from Northstar for 6 months and I felt wonderful! I have noticed in the past week all my old symptoms are back though. I was complaining to my mom about how I was feeling again, she reminded me that I had mentioned my pill looking different. I called the pharmacy and found out the had switched to Aurobindo. Definitely not happy about it!

Jenny - Smart mom you've got. I think my mom was the one who initially suggested the same thing to me, some years ago.

The closest I can find to Northstar fluoxetine, nowadays, is fluoxetine from Teva/Pliva (owned by the same company, and, thus, I THINK the same formulation, though for some reason I slightly prefer Pliva to Teva). I've found them pretty widely available. The 20mg capsules say "Pliva" and are white with green marks and writing on them, and the 40mg capsules are orange and light blue and say "Teva" on them. (Also, the name of the generic manufacturer (or an abbreviation) can usually be found somewhere on the bottle or the bag.) And the pharmacist will be able to tell you what they will likely supply you with, and in most cases, they can order a specific generic manufacturer if you ask them to and are willing to wait a few days. (You can do something similar with more-closely controlled medications, but you have to actually show face at the pharmacy with the prescription first - for fluoxetine, you can do it over the phone.)

I've also, over time and prescriptions, acquired some 20mg fluoxetine pills from Par, from Mylan, and also from Sandoz. I take mostly the Pliva, though I usually mix in a little from the Sandoz because it seems to increase my appetite less than does Pliva alone. (I open the capsules and take a tiny bit of powder from the Sandoz and about half of the powder from the Pliva. Then I reclose the capsule) Taking some of the Par powder along with that (and, I THINK, the Mylan as well - that's a tablet, so I break off a tiny piece. but the Mylan is still newer, and I'm still figuring out what affect it has) seems to make me more actually happy than just stable, but it also makes me hungrier than Pliva and Sandoz alone.

And I take this powder with water, because it burns my tongue if I leave it there too long. But I don't notice any problem with it hurting my throat or stomach. And, as I said in another post, I have lost 15 pounds since I ran out of Northstar eight or nine months ago and thus had to switch.

Hi, Jane. I'm curious to know if you're still on Northstar, as I (as I responded to Stella) haven't been able to find it for months now. Although, to be honest, though I don't feel as great on the new medication, I have lost 15 pounds, which is nice... But I wonder if I could find incorporate the Northstar (if I found it) as a part of a combination that allowed me to feel better but keep off the weight (through careful oversight). Recently, I asked a few pharmacies about Northstar fluoxetine, and, as best they could find out, it wasn't being stocked anymore, which they assumed meant it wasn't being manufactured anymore.

Oh, Jenny, also - I have some Aurobindo fluoxetine, too. A fair amount, as I stopped using it soon after I got it, and it's one of the few (obviously) that I don't incorporate into the mixture I take. I think it MAY have made me less hungry than did the Northstar, but so do most of these other generics. But I know that, whenever I took the Aurobindo, it made me angry. Yeah, maybe that's one of the generic fluoxetines that works least well for people who have had success on Northstar, as you've noticed no success on it, either.

Hi, I was reading your post, I am also looking for the SANDOZ fluoxetine for my next refill, did you find it at any pharmacies? If so please let me know where. Thank you very much

But it's not even as if the cheaper ones are worse. Not necessarily. It just depends on the person. So, if you notice you feel different on a different generic brand of the 'same' medication, don't discount that. If you feel better, stick with the new one from there on out. If you feel worse, request the old one again.

I don't know. Is it a blue Fluoxetine hydrochloride capsule with an imprint of "FLUOXETINE 10mg R147" made by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories?

Oh, sorry, that's blue with white writing. I got it backwards. But I'd recommend doing an image search for 10 mg fluoxetine capsule and searching for your preferred image. Then click on that and see if there's any manufacturer info. on the corresponding page.

Started taking fluoxetine 20 mugs from Walmart in the fall. Previous Pharmacy gave me a white pill for 15 years. These dark blue ones are from India (I asked). They burn my esophagus and have to swallow it with yogurt. Never again.

Brian, if you have a medical license it should be revoked and if you don't then you should keep quiet on this issue. Depression is very disabling and can be deadly. This issue is NOT imagined and has a major negative impact on those of us affected by it.

The pharmacists at Walmart orders sandoz for me. The ones I was getting were blue and I might as well not take them. I did research and decided to try the sandoz brand. There is a huge difference for me. I do have to pay $15.00 verses $4.00 but it is well worth it. Don't let them tell you there is not a difference.

I've had the same experience over 20+yrs on both brand Prozac and various generics ....I always ditto the remark above that " No generics are created equal " ( nor do they work as well as brand). I was on brand for the past 10 yrs and switched jobs. Now my Ins only pays for generic....I'm on Sandoz and tried Tera. Don't let anyone tell you that they are all the same. It's an experimental game to find the one that Truly works for you.

Re: Jeanie (# 100) Expand Referenced Message

Some manufacturers use SHELLAC on the capsules as ink. I am allergic. My throat closes up, and more recently I've become short of breath with an irregular heartbeat. It's becoming tougher to obtain what I need, so I now transfer the capsule contents to plain gelatin caps.

Recently got Northstar fluoxetine. No shellac, so I was thrilled, but noticed hyper feelings immediately. Tried for a few weeks, but things got worse + ankles swelled (actual "pitting," as with kidney problems), and eventually my feet were so stiff they wouldn't bend without severe pain.

Found Sandoz at Meijer. Had shellac, so transferred capsule contents again, but I felt fine. Now Meijer won't get Sandoz (even though they told me legally they must fill with the same manufacturer for me if I request - and even put a note in my file).

The problem, I'm sure, is the INACTIVE INGREDIENTS. Northstar and many other foreign manufacturers are using ingredients that others have not often used.

For me, I believe the MICRO-CRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE and/or SILICON DIOXIDE may be the culprit.

Such fillers are used to lower production costs, often to prevent machinery jam-ups and allow more efficient tamping of capsule contents. Suppliers of these fillers are advertising aggressively, promising cheaper production processes to the drug manufacturers.

I guess I'll get on the phone and see if I can get Sandoz anywhere, but it just seems like it's becoming a losing battle.

Follow-up: The VA changed its supplier from Sandoz to Pliva, and the Pliva is working much better for me.

Re: Jane (# 33) Expand Referenced Message

Hi yes I've been on the Sandoz manufacturer for about 9 months now and it's the only one that I didn't have serious side effects from hardly any side effects and I got a refill this past Monday and they switched me to the all blue by norstar think and I immediately called up there to Walgreens and they tell me now that is on backorder and they don't know when they'll be getting any.
And reading a lot of comments I agree with all of you on when pharmacists or a pharmacy tech doesn't take you seriously on when we say that these generic drugs do have side effects and our bodies react different they make you feel like you're stupid or you're just complaining or your hypochondriac and that's not fair they're in the business to help others educate listen and be as customer-friendly as possible knowing they deal with hundreds of customers a day. So I found the last 15 sthose pills in College Station Texas at a different Walgreens and I also contacted Sandoz and the lady said she didn't know when they would be Manufacturing the 40 mg generic Prozac again. So hopefully by the end of these 15 pills. Sandoz will be manufacturing their generic Prozac again.
