Hi Debbie,

Sorry to hear about this fear you're trying to overcome. I know you can do it if you put your mind to it and make the clear concise decision to put yourself in control of your own thoughts and thought patterns before attempting to get on a plane.

With regards to Valium, I wouldn't suggest taking more than your doctor prescribed you to take within a given time period. That way you aren't any more susceptible to the side effects that this medication possesses.

If need be, what I would recommend is putting lavender essential oil on the soles of your feet to help relax your body and ground your thoughts before going off to the airport. There are a good number of other alternatives for this if you decide that you want to look outside of the prescription drug realm.

I hope this advice helps! The best way to overcome any fear is to face it head on the first time around. The second time around, just get comfortable with it so it doesn't bother you; and the third time around, master it and enjoy your flight! :)

Sounds easy if you don't fear flying. Meds are perfect for this situation. Also consider a beta blocker, slows the heart rate and fight or flight reaction pun intended.
The other responder was talking about exposure therapy. This works a little bit, allows you to get onboard but not enjoy flight

HI DEBBIE I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM TO THE EXTENT THAT I START TO FEEL SICK WAY IN ADVANCE TO MY FLIGHT. MY DOC PRESCRIBED URBANOL WHICH ON A TRIAL RUN DID NOTHING FOR ME, PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW THE VALIUM WORKS.

Research at the Stamford University School of Medicine found benzodiazepines blocked desensitization and increased sensitivity to flying. If meds don't help try methods in the book SOAR, The Breakthrough Treatment for Fear of Flying.
