Can't Stop
UpdatedA little over 2 weeks ago my long term episodic heartburn become more persistent, so I purchased a 14 day regimen of generic Omeprazole. Its effect was dramatic; I had no symptoms for the entire period. When the 14 days were over I stopped per the directions. The heartburn came back almost immediately, and worse than before, so I had to start taking it again, and again it's working. How can I stop? I don't want to have to take this forever (age 66).

Hello, Tom! How are you?
Sometimes, if you've suffered some esophageal erosion, it can take a longer course of treatment for it to heal. In such cases, you may need to take it for anywhere from 1 to 4 months.
Have you checked in with your doctor? They should be able to let you know how long you can safely take it.
I had the erosion issue and constant acid reflux, took Omeprazole for a year. Not once did any of the 4 doctors I'd been seeing tell me that LONG TERM there might be issues with that drug. Or that I should wean off after a certain amount of time. LET ME TELL YOU! I took myself off 5 days ago-cold turkey with no issues. I've lost 8 pounds and actually feel NORMAL. I had an extreme bloat thing going on and was just uncomfortable in my own skin. Speaking of skin-I was getting weird rashes and my hair and nails stopped growing like they normally do. And even on OMEPRAZOLE, I had a burn sensation. After doing my own research and saw the side effects of long term use, I just couldn't put that drug back in my body. I will warn EVERYONE I meet from now on to use it very sparingly and have a plan in place to wean off. I have TUMS handy in case of an episode of any sort, but I haven't had to use it. I eat healthy and exercise 3-4 times a week. Especially now that I have energy again. I feel NORMAL for the first time in about a year. Please so research and make your doc answer any and all questions regarding this medicine. And those that say ZERO side effects... It's a drug/chemical and there are always the chance of side effects. Anything taken long term could grow toxic in our bodies. My opinion:)
