Blood Thinners - Sintrom Dose
(Newest replies first)

Updated

Another day, another blood test! Father, 82, had an ICD fitted Oct '15 after 6 week check he was started on blood thinner Sintrom Dec '15. Initial dose of 14g reduced to 10g, then 9g. INR today was 5.9 & re-test was 6.3! After discussion with hospital he has now been prescribed1g/day for 14 days then another good test. How long does it usually take to settle on a dose that keeps the INR stable between 2.0 & 3.0.

Previous post should read dark URINE not U/A (autocorrect!)

Very helpful, thank you.

I'm looking for an easy reference chart/poster to help identify foods/drinks to avoid or limit.

Can you help on this?

Hello, Liz! How are you?

Yeah, it is very common for these types of medications to require frequent adjusting and his INR can fluctuate from one test to another and can also be affect by what he eats or drinks. When my dad was alive and taking one, his had to vary day by day, he'd take one dose one day, then a lower one the next, then back to other and so on. It can take some time to find the right individualized dosing protocol for each person.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising.

Is there anything else I can help with?

Should read Sintron. Dark U/A prompted a clinic visit last Sunday. Nurse said this was common. Strip test showed no probs. INR was 6+ then 5+ & finally 2.9 which got me thinking as to the accuracy of the testers (see other discussion). The lower INR is the first time it's been between the goal of 2 & 3 which is great & perhaps shows the decrease in dose is working. Hopefully test next Thursday will show a similar INR. Has anyone else had similar experience with regards to Sintron dosing?
