Baclofen & Incontinence

Updated

Trying to ween myself off Baclofen and noticed persistent incontinence is starting to subside. Anyone else experience this?

I didn’t put the two together until I switched spasm meds and got the first time in years I didn’t have any issues. Unfortunately I was allergic and am back on baclofen, and it’s a problem again.

The FDA lists increased urination, and urinary incontinence as being common side effects of Baclofen, along with nausea, drowsiness, and abdominal pain.

Ref: Baclofen Information

A common side effect is considered to be one that has been known to occur in more than 1%, and no more than 10%, of the people that have tried the medication.

How are you doing, now? Are you seeing continued improvement?

thanks for asking. actually, weening down Baclofen has caused my Restless Leg symptoms to act up, sometimes in a very bad, uncontrollable way. overall, though, incidents of bedwetting are less but I'm noticing other knock-on effects as well. I've been on this med for something like 15 years and I'm gonna chat to my neurologist and confirm I'm drawing down in a responsible way. my hope is to be off it completely as I'm super active and don't think I need it. since I started zeroing in on medications, I've stopped acid-reflux medication and Montelukast—both of which are known-bladder irritants. how are *you* doing?

ugh, I'm so sorry to hear that. was the medication in the gabapentin family? that stuff scares me, but sometimes it's very needed. I hope things get better for you soon... I'm also hoping we might be able to crowdsource better home remedies for muscle relaxants. I was under the (mistaken) impression Baclofen was harmless but that's just not the case, like at all. keep us posted on how you're doing!

I sincerely hope you get things worked out as to what's best for you. I can't count how many times I've had bad reactions to a medication, but didn't realize, at first, that my symptoms were caused by the medication. I even went to the ER once, because I was experiencing symptoms that I thought were an allergic reaction to an antibiotic I was prescribed, only to have the doctor there tell me that what I was experiencing were totally normal side effects of the medication doing it's job...... then the rash appeared. I was right, my GP confirmed I was allergic, and had to stop taking it immediately, and never take it, again.

Moral of the story, research your medications, and always be your own advocate. Trust your gut, and don't be afraid to question a doctor.

As for me, when it comes to pain, I have given up on pharmaceuticals, and switched to using edibles, since they are legal in my state, and there's a nice dispensary 5 minutes away from our house. It's also much easier to play with your dosage to get pain, and spasms, under control.

can you recommend an edible company to help with spasms? that's basically the crux of my sleeping issues: jerks/spasms in my legs right as I'm trying to sleep. I already take a CBD product for sleep and my doctor approves of it, so i feel like I'm a good candidate. so sorry to hear you had to learn the hard way that you are allergic to the medicine. which one was it, if you don't mind my asking?
