My husband has been taking anabuse off and on. he was having an allergic reaction and i realized he was gargling w/ listerine. How much time is needed between the medicine before you can drink. Is there another med that might be better? What else should he be careful with?
Thanks

I am a recovered / recovering person for many years. I know there are person's who cannot accept the spiritual answer but please let me share my experience strength and hope with you. So you know who you are talking to first let me say, by the grace, love and mercy of a loving higher power I have just graduated college with social work and rehab psychology degrees on Saturday and I worked as a licensed addictions couselor in the state of Colorado for 7 years in detox units. Anabuse is basically poison in my own possibly biased opinion. It is also an outdated treatment. Cognitive and behavioral change does not take place in a lasting way, again in my own opinion, with reliance on long term pill answers. If the two of you feel this is a last resort and may do more good than harm by all means....I am not a medical profesional. From what I have witness change is a process and rarely profoundly instant right? Likey you can attest to that. The are other drugs on the market that can be used taht I personally feel are likely safer and more effective. You need a skilled addictionologist (or other experience) if you or your husband have a distaste for 12 step programs like Alanon for your support and AA or narcotics anonymous (even if that is not the problem it works at time due to a different personality) for his. This actually provides a new design for living. Alcoholism is a living problem once the chemical is out of the system. The good news is you and your husband only have to handle a day or a even a second at a time (though I know this is a difficult and painful time.... this too shall pass...though it is hard to believe while also overwhelming at times). That is all we are provided with anyway right? . But the most important thing you can do is find a form of support and spirituality that works for you. Make it what makes sense to you or it will not work. I am not talking fanatical stuff just a peaceful mental place for either and both of your hearts/minds. That is the way to lasting sanity from what I have learned....The 12 step programs statistically have the greatest success rate I have always heard....... fancy fast cure are part of the problem not the solution just speaking from my own experiences. Basics.....the book of alcoholics anonymious sort of sneaks God in the back door and as divinely but also humanly inspired and secrely modeled after the Bible some argue.... At any rate...the general thing that is recommended is to try several different meeting times and locations to give it a fair chance. Changing deeply ingrained behaviors is highly uncomfortable at best. ....best of everythinng to you and all this holiday season....you and he will need extra supportg through the holidays.... inspired.

You are so narrow minded. Is your bible poison? Do you use it as a crutch or an aid. Anabuse is a gift created to help those who need it to help them get thru those times of uncertainty. When we ate feeling weak and may want to take that first drink, anabuse, what you call poison allows that moment of weakness to pass. It helps us to seek out the support and gives us time to find the help we need BEFORE taking that first and sometimes fatal first drink. It's not poison. It's people who think like you who are poison. Believing others are weak if they need help from a pill and not just the love of god and their own strong will to survive the rigors of sobriety in this day and age.
