I started Metoprolol Tartrate 25mg being one tab every 12 hours. I was in the hospital with a blood pressure of 200/130, sometimes higher with a high pulse and irregular heartbeat. I experienced tightening in chest, slight difficulity in breathing, and extreme variables in my pressures. Most of the time they are in the normal range, but occasionally my systolic has dropped under 100 and my diastolic was 58. I am monitoring my foods and am also taking Ativan twice daily. I am terrified. Anybody else have these variables in pressures? I have only been on the medicines for four weeks now. I have had diabetes and thyroid neg testing. I was diagnosed with Panic Disorder??? Never heard of it before. All my family including five siblings have high blood pressure as well. ## These types of vari...

Took 25mg for 5-6 years and upped by Dr. to 50mg a few years ago due to supposed HBP. Started losing my hair all within one month on crown after being on Metoprolol for a couple of years. Thought it was due to menopause. Was put on med due to PVC's (early heart beats). Turned out several years after going on this med found out that PVC's were due to lack of Vitamin D. Dr. told me to continue meds to lower my BP. Recently ran out of meds and while waiting for refill, took BP several times a day. Found out my BP was better without the Metoprolol. Been off of it cold turkey for a month. Unless my BP goes up, I will NEVER go back on this again. ## Hello, Nix! How are you? I'm glad you're doing so well without it, but please continue to keep an eye on your blood pressure, to ...

I am experiencing symptoms similar to those on a bad smog day. I smell what seems to be strong exhaust; my eyes burn/tear, my throat gets scratchy, and my lungs feel irritated. I took my car into the shop and there is no exhaust leak. I notice the smell at first in my car but can now sometimes experience the odor in my home. I started this medication at about the same time the symptoms began...seems like there could be a connection... ## The possible number of side effects of this drug appear to be worse than what you may be trying to treat! I could write a short essay by pasting the side effects of this drug on a paper. Although none of the side effects directly state what you are experiencing, I am more than certain that this medication is the cause. Possibly another side effect liste...

Does the drug cause swelling of the ankles? ## Yes, I was substituted this drug after using Toprol XL (50) and my feet started to swell almost immediately. I stopped taking this med and the swelling stopped. My feet are back to normal. Going back to Toprol XL ## Metoprolol is a beta blocker that is used to treat high blood pressure and some cardiac conditions and yes, it has been known to cause edema, in some people, especially if they are prone to it for some reason, such as in the case of Congestive Heart Failure patients. Have you contacted your doctor? In this case, you will probably require a switch to a different medication, or the addition of a diuretic to reduce the fluid accumulation. ## Yes it did for me very very bad size of my knee. I've taken metoprolol Succ Tb 100Mg ER for a few year from Mylan. Now I'm taking the same from PAR. I've started getting a lot of palpitation. Could this by the reason? ## Hello, Evelyn! How are you? It is difficult to say, there can be fluctuations in the amount of the active ingredient from one generic to another and adjusting to a slightly different dosage could result in your experiencing palpitations. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may include nausea, dizziness, increased urination and headache. However, it would be best to have yourself checked out by your doctor to be sure of what's going on. Is there anything else I can help with?

..been diagnosed w/ MVP recently and the doctor gave me instructions that I should take 1/2 tab of Metoprolol 50 mg twice a day. What would be the effect if I don't follow the doctor's instructions or I would not take it at all. I'm afraid of its side effects. ## I was also on 50mg (1/2 a tab twice a day) and after 7 days or so I started to itch all over my torso & under & down arms as well. I wondered what was causing the itch and was thinking of everything else except the new medication, Metoprolol tartrate I was on. Anyway I suddenly thought of the sequence of events and thought that it was this new medication which I really did not need to have had in the first place. My BP was way down, & I had a slight irregular heart beat, which I believe had been there fo...

The Dr. started me on metoprolol 25 mg in the p.m. Then when the palpitations and afib came back it went to twice a day a.m. and p.m.. In the last fhree months I have experienced more sleepless nights and anxiety and was blaming it on my nerves....NO, this medicine is not kind to the body or mind in my opinion! I was ready to take an antidepressant until I read all the side effects....not good folk, good luck! ## Yes, unfortunately Metoprolol has been known to cause such issues in some people that take it, though it really isn't that common, but I also had problems with it. Learn more Metoprolol details here. The one I found that works better and causes a lot less side effects is Labetalol, so you might want to consult with your doctor about it. I got a horrible cold/flu and my heart rate keeps going over 100 - psvt has returned. I am taking metoprolol in desperation. Please help. Has anyone else ever had this happen? I can't take any medication for fear of starting a psvt. I have taken Advil. ## Whenever you are sick with a condition that can affect your breathing and circulation, it causes your heart to have to work harder to pump enough blood to your organs, so it can be normal for your respiratory rate, heart rate, and blood pressure to become elevated. Did your doctor instruct you to restart the Metoprolol? The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, hypotension and palpitations.

I'm sorry, but I need more details, in order to be able to advise you. The FDA classifies Metoprolol as a beta blocker that is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry cough, increased urination and hypotension. ## I have a question I have been on metoprolol 25 mg daily for a fib a tach plus clonazepam .... my doctor would like to start 25 mg of atenenol in the afternoon due to i have high bloodpressure Are these safe to combine 2 beta blockers

I'm taking Metoprolol (50mg) daily. I've experienced a noticeable measure of ED. I wasn't aware of this side effect when I started taking it. Is there another Beta blocker equally effective that does not cause any degree of ED? ## I am afraid that this can be a potential side effect of almost all blood pressure medications, so there is no way to tell you that any one will not cause any degree of ED. I recently had trouble with Metoprolol myself and my doctor recommended I switch to Carvedilol, it seems to cause less side effects and problems for people that have had trouble with Metoprolol. It is also more powerful, so you usually require half the dose of it, that you did of the Metoprolol. More information: Have you tried asking your doctor about alternatives?

I started metoprolol about 6 months ago, and after a few weeks on it, I started having pain in my upper legs (thigh area) and sometimes lower legs. I complained to Dr and they say it’s not from the med. I never had a leg problem and it’s getting worse. After sitting, when I get up my legs feel heavy and painful. Had anyone else had anything like this? ## Hi Jojo, Sorry to hear about your situation. Leg pain unfortunately isn't listed as a side effect of Metoprolol on NIH.gov or Medlineplus.gov. However, they do list swelling (inflammation) of the legs, which I believe in turn can correspond to pain. Have been on 50 mg twice a day now on toprolXL is it better to take the new pill morning or evening? Thank you for your advice. ## I take Metoprolol 100 mg now/once a day, but when I was on the 50 mg and it increased to 100, the dr. said take one in a.m., one in p.m...12 hours apart, at the same time every day, until that prescription was used up and the new one started. If you were prescribed to take it twice a day then you would HAVE to take one in a.m. and one in p.m., right? Plus the directions should be on the bottle! ## Hello, Susan! How are you? I started Metoprolol this Monday after the cardiologist prescribed it because of being in the ER with extremely fast heartbeats. After a heart ultrasound, chest xray, blood tests, and wearing a holter moniter, they found there was nothing wrong with my actual heart other than the fact that I have a mild heart arrhythmia which they believe was brought out by a virus I also had. Now that I have started the medicine, I have had dizziness, nausea, sever mood swings, insomnia, and anxiety. The cardiologists' nurse said these were all normal, but it seems a little excessive to me. I am on the lowest possible dose (25MG) minus the possibility of cutting the pill in half and I take it once a day. I do not have high blood pressure and am young and not overweight (5ft and 105lbs). low pulse, irregular heart beat ## I take both Lisinopril (10 mg daily) and Metoprolol (50 mg daily. 1/2 AM & 1/2 PM) These pills look a lot alike and it is possible to get them mixed up if not cautious. 8/17/17 I've been taking 25mg of Atenolol 3xday for Afib, I have it often, have a pacemaker and on pradaxa (blood thinner). Apparently Atenolol is back-ordered all over the country. My cardiologist prescribed Metoprolol, only 25mg 1xday. I'm switching tomorrow and I'm concerned with enough dosage from Metoprolol. I have googled, can't locate equivalent dosage, can you help? ## It is generally better to follow your doctor's instructions as to what dosage you should take. Since these are in the same medication class, the doses are also sometimes the same. The FDA warns that the side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Have you started taking it, yet? If so, how are you doing?

The druggist changed the color of my metoprolol from a blue round pill to a white oval pill and the white oval one seems to have given my legs a hard time walking and my hands are very tight. I know I have arthritis but this is more than usual. Could there be any connection? I believe there is. Since I've started taking the white one I drop everything and hardly walk. Would there be some ingredient in the white pill that was not in the blue pill? ## The inactive ingredients can differ from one generic to another. What are the markings on the white pill that you've received? I'm sorry, but I need this additional information in order to research more details for you. Can metoprolol and harvoni be taken together? I am on metoprolol and now I need to start harvoni. Should I be monitored? ## They can be taken together, if your doctor has instructed you to take them both, but yes, you should be monitored regularly by your doctor. The NIH lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and joint/muscle aches. How are you doing? Have you started Harvoni, yet?

I have been taking metoprolol tartrate 50 mg 2x a day for a while now, my doctor just told me to now start taking 2 tablets in the morning and 1 in the evening. I am concerned that 150 mg per day is too much. Can u tell me if this is not a safe dosage or if its ok to take that much? my blood pressure usually runs around 140/85 to 158/92 ## Hello, Rhonda! How are you? I understand your concern, that does seem to be a high amount…but it actually isn't for this medication. Metoprolol can be taken in amounts up to 450mgs a day and it is usually started at the 50mg twice daily dosing, then adjusted until the desired effect is reached, which in your case would be lower blood pressure. Normal levels are considered 120/80 and generally anything over 130/85 requires treatment. The high...
