What are the medications used for trigeminal neuralgia? which is the most effective? which is the safest? which is the most dangerous? What are the maximum dosages? ## The anti-seizure drugs gabapentin and carbamazepine are most commonly prescribed. They can be effective, but they also have a sedating, dulling effect, and less commonly more serious side effects. Some people have found topical ketamine to be effective; in low, topical doses it is probably fairly safe, but topical ketamine has not been in clinical trials. There are some anecdotal reports of the skin product Gallixa being highly effective with no side effects. ## Safety and efficacy are actually purely relative, since not every medication affects every person that takes it in the same way. What works for one person may not...

I was diagnosed with TN a month ago and the pain is unbearable .When it first happened I thought i had a bad tooth but more in the jaw then the tooth and the it went more to my face then forehead this freaked me out so I called the hospital and they told me to come in and they ended up keeping me for 4 days. Then the cycle began, they gave me pain medication and gabapentin and sent me home. Well every 3 or 4 days the pain would flair WAY up and I would end up in the ER where they would give me a IV injection on dilaudid and the pain would come way down from a 10+ to a 1 or 2,This same dilaudid in oral form does not seem to do any thing for the pain. My Dr has tried other pain meds but nothing oral will touch the pain when it flairs . I have taken 6 - 2mg tabs at one time and felt nothin...

I'm taking 60 mg of cymbalta and 1mg of kloanopin. I find that kloanopin relaxed my jaw and neck muscles. The cymbalta hasn't kicked in yet. It's only been a week. ## Hello, Steve! How are you doing now? Mediations such as Cymbalta can take 4 to 6 weeks to reach their full level of efficacy in the body. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, weight changes and dry mouth. Is there anything else I can help with?

Iam now on gabpentin for trigeminal neuralgia and a neurologist wants me to tru beclofen. i want drug information about the use of baclofen for this condition ## Hi Elizabeth, Based on my research, there are studies indicating that Baclofen is reported to be useful for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. References: 1). ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6372646 2). ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6201366 However, as with starting any drug, there's really no telling whether or not you'll experience some possible side effects as well. So that may also be something to keep in mind if you haven't had any complications arise with Gabapentin in order to better compare the two options. I hope this helps!

What are the latest developments and drugs for controlling the pain of Trigeminal Neuralgia. ## I have been taking Lyrica for Trigeminal neuralgia with some pain relief, however I experienced hallucinations and other mind altering symptoms. I would never consider taking it again. ## Margaret, how much were you taking? Those are not typical side effects for this medication, according to NIH reports. They typically include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, mood swings, and weight changes. What other medications have you tried? Have you tried any SSRI antidepressants?

I was on a combination of Trileptal and Neurontin for my Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia pain. I was not having any side effects from the Neurontin, but having problems with the Trileptal (blurred vision and unsteady gate). The doctor wanted to decrease the Trileptal, but having done so in the past, she knew I would have increased pain. I was already taking 2700 mg of Neurontrin and I guess that is the max, so she took me off the Neurontin and put me on 150mg of Lyrica a day, then increased to 300mg/day. I am still having alot of pain, but it has only been 5 days and I am rather impatient. Has anyone heard of Lyrica use for Trigeminal Neuralgia pain? Thanks ## I have been on 900mg Neurontin a day, lots of pain. I had balloon compression. Did not help one bit. Dr now upped my neurontin to ...

I take Gralise for Trigeminal Neuralgia, TN2 (1800 mg). It works far better then Gabapentin, which made me feel terrible. I have trouble with most drugs…they don’t work allergic reactions…. 600 mg worked for the first month. My only side effect was terrible heartburn that came and went. Then it just stopped working. At 1800 mg I must take with other drugs….Klonopin and Aimovig. I was also on Cymbalta, but gained 60 pounds, had severe insomnia and terrible nocturnal leg pains. I got off it, but now need something to get that pain under control again.

I have been taking Gabapentin 300 mgs.- 2 caps 3 x's a day. have continued to gain weight and cannot lose it. A friend said that Gabapentin is the reason. I researched it and it is true. It does take away t.n. but I gain weight!!! What is the answer? ## Yes, it has been known to cause serious weight gain in some people that take it, according to NIH reports. Other side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, mood swings, and dry mouth. If the weight gain has been severe, you may want to speak to your doctor about trying an alternative medication, such as Pregabalin, to see if it may not cause you the same issue. Is there anything else I can help with? ## THANK YOU BUT NO--I WOULD LIKE A NEW BODY BUT NO ONE HAS ONE. THANKS FOR YOUR ANSWER. ## TALKED TO MY FAMILY DOC...

I have trigeminal neuralgia and my doctor ordered 200mg tegretol two times a day. After day 2 of taking this medicine, I noticed nose bleeds and bleeding from lower areas that are not supposed to bleed. Anyway, wondering how long it will take to get out of my system and would there be any lingering effects that I'd need to see the doctor again for? Oh, and where the heck is this blood coming from? I have no insurance and pay cash for each visit so I am trying to be cheap here! ## Hello, Laura! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem that you're having. This medication has been known to cause blood in the urine and stool, as reported by the FDA, though that is a very rare side effect. I have trigeminal neuralgia and will need to change medication (been on Gabapentin for 11 yrs) since it is not working well for pain control. I am HLAB 27 positive and per drug info on tegretol usage: anyone who is positive for HLAB 1502 or HLA 3101 will develop steven johnson syndrome which creates an emergency situation leading to hospital admission. I ask if anyone has experience with tegretol usage leading to such a reaction? I plan to be evaluated for both conditions. ## I finally found a MD who has been helpful in diagnosing and treating my problem without usage of tegretol. I hope no one else has to deal with this issue.

I will probaly go back to otc patch. I see the doctor in May . ## Those are all typical side effects for Oxybutynin, as listed by the FDA. You may also experience nausea and blurry vision.
