Just started on this prescription for a urinary infection after being pulled off of Cipro which gave me headaches and made sleep difficult. Is Sulphamethox similar to Cipro when it comes to avoiding calcium (milk/dairy products) 2 hours before and 6 hours after taking it? I was told that eating or drinking calcium rich foods diminished the effects and needed to know if this applied to Sulphamethox as well. Thanks ## Hello, Kevin! How are you? Since this is a different type of antibiotic, dairy products do not affect its absorption. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

Does this thin blood like aspirin, Ibuprofen? Is it safe to take this prior to surgery to knock a sinus infection? ## Sulfamethoxazole Tmp Ds itself is not a blood thinner, although it does have a warning label stating it's interaction with other blood thinners. As far as pre-operative doses go, this is probably something that should be discussed with the surgeon, since every surgeon has their own unique pre and post operative instructions. Odds are it is probably fine, as it is an antibiotic and doesn't thin blood; but just to be sure I would double check with his personal instructions. I am an 80 year old female in good health with no medications until a recent bout with Urinary Tract Infection. I tolerated the pills for a few days week but the symptoms got so severe I stopped taking them. I took 15 out of 20. I was constipated for the first four days and had stomach discomfort with lots of gas and bloating. The last couple of days my legs hurt bad from my groin to my knees and the bloating and gas got worse even after regular bowel movements. I felt so bad I stayed in bed most of the day. I felt normal after getting off this medication. Will never take this one again. Now I wonder what ingredients could cause the most severe leg pain. ## This is a generic for the antibiotic Bactrim, smz stands for Sulfamethoxazole, and TMP stands for Trimethoprim.
