I have an infected tooth and I have some antibiotic that I've never taken called Sulfamethoxazole Tmp. Can I use them? ## Hello, Tete! Sorry about the tooth. You need to see a dentist, even if you already have an antibiotic to take, if there is a dental infection present, it will only help temporarily. Since the antibiotic cannot fix the underlying cause of the infection, such as a deep cary or receding gum line, it will just keep returning. Additionally, there is a chance that it isn't an actual infection and then it would not be appropriate to use an antibiotic and that creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria. You can learn more about this medication here: MedlinePlus ## Can sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (800/160mg) be used for teeth infections?

i have an absess tooth and want to know if I can take Sulfamethoxazole-TMP-DS for this? ## An abcess tooth is tricky and may be dangerous depending upon the circumstances. Serious bone (i.e. osteomylitis) infections can develop if not cared for. Pen VK first, Amoxicillin is second and a third generation like Cefdinir would be an alternate choice with ampicillin allergies. Doxycycline is also used but the assessment should be made by either your dentist or your physician ## Can i take this sulfamethoxazole.tmp for a infection tooth ## Hi DeBorah, While Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim is used to treat various types of infections, tooth infections is not one that is listed under the medication guidelines. My mother has an abscess tooth and there is not enough left to pull. She does not have insurance so she can not pay to get it cut out. She is prescribed an antibiotic but cannot afford it. I had an infection a few weeks ago and still have some of my antibiotics left and i need to know if she can take them for this. ## Having 'some' of your antibiotics isn't going to be enough to give her a full course and destroy the infection. (You should have finished all of them, when you were taking them, actually.) In addition, even a full course of antibiotics is not going to solve the problem, with a tooth in that shape, she will just keep getting recurring infections and letting a dental infection like that go untreated can be very dangerous. What I'd recommend is looking for a d...

Extreme tooth ache (infection) reoccurring of course. The only option to eliminate the pain and infection is a dentist. Of course I do not have that option right now. I haven't for a long time. Thus reoccurring tooth pain(infection). I have taken Clindamycin in the past for a tooth infection. But right now I only have the Sulfameth-Trimethoprim 800/160mg tabs. From what I have read it is not often prescribed for a tooth infection. But for a bacterial infection yes. So I am giving it a try. If it works I will update you. If it doesn't then it's a trip to the Emergency room for a numbing shot and a prescription for antibiotics that I might or might not be able to pay for. Tooth aches, abscess, or infection. Honest to God worst pain imaginable. That says alot Because I have bee...

My tooth cracked in half very sharp pain is in the tooth it is infected and I had a hip replacement in Feb, 2014. I still have this medicine that s good and want to relieve pain tonight. Can I use this medicine now? I will see dr. tomorrow. ## Hello, Angie! How are you? The FDA classifies this medication as an antibiotic, so it will only teat bacterial infections. Typical side effects are listed as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, it will not alleviate the pain. In order for this to help with the pain, it has to start fighting the infection and that will take several days. It's also best not to take it, unless your doctor confirms the presence of an infection and tells you that it's appropriate to do so. Taking it inap...

I have a abscess under my front bottom right tooth in the gums. I have no med insurance or money due to being out of work for last 5 yrs. Can someone take this for the infection. And how much would someone take? ## Hi, Dee! I'm sorry about the problem you're having, I've been there myself, but this is an issue that you really need to see a dentist and have treated. Many places in the U.S. have low-income dental clinics now that have emergency walk-in hours, so you may be able to get treatment free or at a significant discount and you really need to look into it. The reason I am saying this is because treating the infection will not help with the underlying reason for the infection. An abscess is usually caused by a deep cavity that has been left untreated for too long and de...

No, if you took a course of it back in July and still have the burning tongue, then it most likely hasn't been caused by the medication. Its typical side effects include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Are you on any other medications? Have you been using any new toothpastes or mouthwashes? Have you had any dental work done?

I have an abscess tooth will this medication work for this or is it used for a abscess tooth? Sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/160 tabs ## Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim is an antibiotic, it's a generic for Bactrim, so it may help with the infection that causes an abscess, but that will only be a temporary fix. When you have an abscessed tooth, there has to be an underlying cause, such as a cavity and this will not fix that, so you will still need to see a dentist, or it will just eventually return. I have a really bad toothache that I think is abscessed. Will Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) help treat the infection? ## Can Bactrim be used for a Tooth Infection? While Bactrim is effective against a range of bacterial infections, it is not typically the first-line antibiotic for treating tooth infections, which are often caused by anaerobic bacteria found in the oral cavity. These infections usually respond better to antibiotics that are specifically effective against the types of bacteria found in dental abscesses, such as penicillin, amoxicillin, or clindamycin, which are more traditionally prescribed by dentists. However, in cases where a patient cannot tolerate these first-line antibiotics or if the infection is caused by a bacteria that is known to be susceptible to...
