What program should I follow to taper off and finally stop taking Losartan? ## Hello, Bob! How are you? What condition are you taking it to treat? If you have high blood pressure and stop taking it, you create the risk of your blood pressure going back up, again. There is actually no cure for high blood pressure, it can only be managed. This is especially risky, if the medication is the only thing keeping it down. Elevated blood pressure creates the risk of heart attack, stroke and congestive heart failure. Are you also watching what you eat and getting plenty of exercise? Losartan is an ARB that's most commonly used to treat high blood pressure, typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, hypotension, increased urination and headache. ## Thank you for the informat...

I have been on Losartan 100mg for more then a year now with side effects I believe. I also take Metoprolol 50mg. I believe I am taking to much for my high blood pressure. I don't have the high blood pressure anymore but I would like to just take one of these. ## Hello, Sherry! How are you? There is no cure for high blood pressure, so you still have it, it's just that the medications are doing their job and keeping it down. Stopping one could cause it to begin going up, again. You are not on a very high number of medications, nor are you taking very high doses. Multiple medications are often prescribed to help bring someone's blood pressure down as fast as possible. You may be able to try stopping one, but you shouldn't do so, without your doctor's approval, because t...

I had taken losartan50/hctz 12.5 for 10 years, In recently years I suffered dry coughing and bad running nose allergy. I found out this is the side effect of losartan. Cutting the dose to half, changing to a water pill.. did not solve the problem. Over this holiday I developed bronchitis and was quite ill. I had very bad coughing, losing voice, sinus infection, nose bleeding, etc. I stopped taking Losartan to avoid further complications. I notified my doctor that I will check my blood pressure if the record is not over 140-90. I will keep the Losartan off. What else can I do? ## Hello, Muchin! How are you doing? Have your symptoms improved, yet? The FDA lists other typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache and increased urination. However,...

I have jAFib with accompanying shortness of breath and since taking Losartan 25 mg daily, the SOB has been much worse, I cannot walk 100 feet without having to stop and catch my breath. I also take Atenolol for low blood pressure. Can I stop the Losartan abruptly without any consequences? ## Hello, Joan! How are you? It would be best to consult your doctor and follow their instructions. It could be that your blood pressure is going too low, so you may need to adjust the dosage of one of these medications, or stop taking it. Other side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and increased urination. Is there anything else I can help with?

I don't know if I'm just being paranoid. Last saturday my blood pressure was 99/62 so i called my doctor and went for an appointment and my doctor told me to stop taking losartan if its below 140/90. I checked my blood pressure this morning without taking medication and it's 137/92. Is that safe enough to not take my medication yet? Please help me. ## Hello, Caly! How are you? It is always best to follow your doctor's instructions, however, 137/92 is slightly elevated, so you should keep an eye on it. As reported by the FDA, Losartan can sometimes cause low blood pressure as a side effect, along with nausea, dizziness, headache and increased urination. However, I am curious as to why your doctor didn't just change your medication or adjust your dosage? What dosage ar...

My blood pressure has been running low the past days. Today average is 107/70. Will I still take the losartan? I also am being treated for anxiety. I took last night 8pm .125mg of CLONAZEPAM (1/4 pill). That's probably worn out by today 6pm. Please help me decide. I'm scared that if I don't take losartan my BP might rise. ## Hello, Techi! How are you? Those aren't dangerously low numbers and you should still take your medication as prescribed by your doctor. Stopping suddenly creates the risk of a rebound effect that could cause your blood pressure and heart rate to elevate to dangerous levels. The typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain and hypotension. The Clonazepam can also lower your blood pressure, ...

I was on losartan 50mg a little over 3 weeks and started having chest pain. The first 3 times I had chest pain thought it might be heartburn. By the fourth week of taking losartan this pass Monday night I thought I was having a heart attack. Called my dr and went in they did an EKG (everything was fine) and the dr. did not want me to come off the losartan she now prescribed losartan with a 12.5 water pill. I have an appointment with a cardiologist on Jan 6 of next week. I am still having chest pain but not as bad. Should I stop the medicine? ## Hello, Suzanne! How are you? Yes, as reported by the FDA, this medication has been known to cause chest pain in some people that take it, as a rare side effect. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache and stomach pain. However, I'...

I have been taking losartan 50 mg a day, but divided in the morning and night. As my dr noticed side effects, I was later prescribed 25 mg. It has been 10 days but I have serious cramps in my legs when I'm jogging or walking. I'll consult with my dr... My bp is 120/80. Is there another medicine that will lower my bp but with less side effects than losartan? Or can I take half of 25mg one time a day? ## I am taking this drug as well with the same side affects. After having taken it for a month the cramps (Charlie horses) have all but stopped. ## Those might be side effects of this medication, according to NIH reports. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, and increased urination. But as GS stated, they typically go away, after your body becomes used to the medicati...

Hello! I have just been prescribed losartan +HCTZ by my doctor. I was told that once I take this, it is for life. Is there any chance of doing away with this medication and use alternative medicine instead( fish oi, garlic, etc)? I am not overweight and my triglycerides are fine. If I stick to proper diet and more consistent gym sessions, can I do away with combizar? Thank you. ## Hi, Jaypee! No, it doesn't necessarily have to be for life, there are people that do get their hypertension under control via proper exercise and being very careful with their diets. Some supplements can also help. The important thing to remember is to not just stop taking it abruptly. You should consult your doctor and, if it seems you're doing well and may be able to stop it, it should be done slowly...

Just started taking losartan 1/2 pill 12.5mg by a new manufacturer AuRobindo and I cannot stop coughing. I stopped them 2 days ago and still have a lingering cough. ## Hello, Snookie! How are you doing? Has there been any change? That can be a normal side effect of this medication, according to FDA reports. You may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, and increased urination. If you need to take a medication like this for high blood pressure, or a cardiac condition, however, it would be best to see your doctor about trying a different one. ## Thanks, I really hate the medication, I've gained weight and have low energy. My heart doesn't pump hard enough I've been thinking about talking to the Dr about a pacemaker. We'll see what he thinks about that.

I have been on it for 2 months and the side effects have been awful. I couldn't stand it any more. I stopped taking it last Wednesday. It's been 5 days. I now have swollen ankles. Is this something to worry about? What is the risk of stopping and how long does it take to get it out of your system? ## Hello, Lindyann! How are you? Yes, you shouldn't have stopped it abruptly, because that can cause a rebound effect, such as what you're experiencing with the edema. You may also have dangerously elevated blood pressure. Please consult your doctor as soon as possible to have things checked out for your own safety. You may require medical treatment and will need to try a different blood pressure medication. Are there any other questions or concerns? ## hello..ive been taking l...

I was switched by my cardiologist from Lisinopril to Losartan because of the coughing caused by Lisinopril. Since taking Losartan 100 mg once a day I have experienced muscle aches from my shoulder all the way down the back to my thighs. It feels like I was doing a heavy workout. My VA Dr. said he didn't think it was from the Losartan. I see my regular Dr. in June and am going to inform him. Do any of u think it could be from the meds? ## From what I could gather, Losartan does list the following side effects that may be what you're experiencing: leg, knee, or back pain muscle cramps or weakness chest pain Referenced from: nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a695008.html#side-effects To my understanding, it's unlikely that these side effects will subside until you stop taki...

Stopped Losartan was having low blood pressure and felt like was literally dying ... Feel better since stopping but BP all over the place high and low and weird feeling on left forehead like tingling cold feeling ... Is this withdrawal? ## If you stopped taking this abruptly, it could have caused dangerous elevations for awhile, in your blood pressure and heart rate, so you need to consult your doctor and have this checked out, for your own safety. Rather than just stopping it, you should have consulted your doctor and tried a different medication. That would be much safer, as reported by the NIH. How high have your blood pressure levels been?

my husband is concerned about his hair loss..his hair stylist said it could be his BP med..should he try to wean off it and see? ## Hello, Melody! How are you? If he has high blood pressure, then he can't just stop taking a medication for it. He needs to speak to his doctor about trying a different medication. Several blood pressure medications can cause hair loss as a side effect, as listed by the FDA, along with nausea, dizziness, headache and increased urination. However, not all of them do and there shouldn't be a problem with him trying a different one. Is there anything else I can help with?

I've been on a low dose of Losartan everyday and feel fatigued. How long before it goes away after stopping treatment? ## I too was having alot of side effects. The biggest ones were anxiety, neck and back pain, leg cramps especially at night, dry mouth, bad cough, felt tired all the time, dizziness when I got up, shortness of breath, felt foggy, like I wasn't really here, like in a bad dream and lastly I was getting really depressed! Well I cold turkey quit it (losartan 100 mgs a day for 6 months). I couldnt take it anymore. I didnt experience anything bad from stopping it cold turkey. If anything the next day I felt a little better and everyday after I started feeling better and better. Its only been 10 days that I quit it and every side effect is completely gone except the sh...

I take Losartan for high blood pressure. I was also on HRT Femeston. I have stopped taking HRT and now take Dong Quai and Black Kohosh. These are suiting me but as Dong Quai will help with high blood pressure can I stop taking Losartan? ## Hello, Sarah! How are you? It would be best to continue taking it, unless your doctor approves of your stopping it. While the NIH does list that some herbs have been known to help lower blood pressure, most of them did not lower it significantly enough on their own to replace the use of actual proven prescription medications. However, a good healthy diet, with lots of proper exercise, might enable you to eventually get it under full control naturally, so you can stop taking the medication. What have your recent blood pressure levels been?

I am taking 50mg because I am diabetic. Dr told me that it is recommended for diabetics. I have always had low be, 113/63 is normal for me. But I often have dizziness and have even had therapy to adjust the crystals in the ear which helped. One dr wanted me to stop them another says no. What is a pt supposed to do? Still should they be a pm thing to offset the dizzied? ## Hello, Susan! How are you doing? Has there been any change? Yes, it you aren't taking it for high blood pressure, or a heart condition, it should be fine to take them whenever it is most convenient for you. The FDA lists the other side effects as possibly including nausea, and increased urination.

Hello. My son is on 50mg Losartan for prevention of aortic root growth due to Marfan syndrome. After about six months of taking it, he started to experience episodes of feeling “funny.” This included brief nausea/drop in the pit of his stomach, dizziness, and a feeling like he didn’t want to move his arms and legs. In the recent past, this has progressed into what appear to be petit mal or absence seizures—brief periods of staring blankly and not responding. He still reports that sudden drop in the pit of his stomach preceding an episode and then a feeling of not wanting to move arms and legs. I asked his cardiologist if the Losartan could be causing those episodes and he was skeptical but agreed to take him off the meds for a week or so to see if they stopped. H...

Just started on Losartan , previously was on lisinopril that didnt do anything to lower BP. After 3 days on Losartan I noticed my resting heart rate in now 100+… previously was 65 to 70 on any given day.. I was told it could take 2 to 3 weeks for Losartan to fully be in my system to see a change. Will my heart rate get lower once the med takes effect or is something wrong? ## Hello, Dom! How are you? The higher heart rate could be due to stopping the Lisinopril, if you stopped abruptly and switched to the Losartan, it may have caused a rebound effect that can include elevated heart rate and elevated blood pressure. However, it is always best to check with your doctor to be sure. If the Losartan works for you, you should eventually see an improvement in your heart rate. My heart ra...
