I have some prednisone I got in 2005 are they still good 10 years later? ## Hi Kim, According a news article from the LA Times, many medications actually remain good for up to 20-40 years past the expiration date, depending on the substance and how they're stored. Harvard Medical School also has a very similar article stating that many medications are good well beyond the 10 year mark. Ref: health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml I don't have a specific list of these exact medications, nor do I encourage taking something that's expired, but often times it seems that the date listed is based on mere speculation and not tested by manufacturers for efficacy past a certain time frame, even if it is still ok to take. Having said that, if 100% efficacy is important to you...

I have allergy induced asthma, which occasionally flairs up and I need to take a short term dose of prednisone. The prescription that I keep on hand expired 11 months ago. Is it still safe to use and will it be effective? ## Hello, Rita! How are you? It does not become dangerous, but it has likely started to lose some efficacy, according to the NIH, thus it would be best to dispose of it and obtain a new supply. My mother-in-law has the same problem, so her doctor usually keeps a running prescription on file for her, which they renew every year, to make sure she always has a fresh supply on hand. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, nervousness, insomnia, fluid retention, and elevated heart rate. Is there anything e...

Is it OK to use prednisone 3 months after the expiration date? ## Hello, Dina! How are you? This is a steroid class medication and they do tend to degrade over time, so it's most likely not going to be as effective as it was, before it was expired. It would be best to see your doctor for a new prescription. This medication may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, weight changes, acne and fluid retention. Is there anything else I can help with?

They are a year old and don't seem to be working. I'm half way through this batch. I.have a new batch now. Should I start the new batch now? Thanks ## Yes, they can lose efficacy if exposed to such conditions, so it would likely be best to take the new supply. The typical side effects of Prednisone may include nausea, dizziness, headache, nervousness, anxiety, acne, and insomnia. My mother-in-law has to take it, once in awhile, for her severe asthma, and I always told her not to even keep it in our bathroom, so she now keeps all her medications in a cabinet in her bedroom. If it still doesn't he...

They may feel that it's okay for you to try it. I have to give my dog peri-pred (prednisone for babies) and her prescription has expired. Is it still safe to give my dog this liquid prednisone. ## Expired tablets (depending on the type of medication and how it's stored) may generally be regarded as safe under certain circumstances. However, when it comes to liquid solutions, I don't think it's wise to take any chances if has been expired for any significant length of time. That's just my two cents though. So it may be best to discuss the benefits vs risks with a qualified veterinarian who can evaluate the dog in person. Surely, if it's only a few days to a week past due, I personally wouldn't have any issues with the expiration date, but this is your dog's health on the line and I would encourage you to ge...

Hi I am from Melbourne Australia. Can you tell me, is prednisone the same as prednisolone? Also has "panafcortelone" printed on the bottle. Expiry Aug 2014. Safe to take?? ## Hello, John! How are you? No, Prednisone and Prednisolone are two different medications, although the FDA classifies them both as steroids and they can treat similar conditions. And it doesn't become dangerous, once expired, but it does being to lose efficacy, so it would be best to dispose of it and obtain a new supply. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, acne, insomnia and nervousness. This medication is listed as containing Prednisolone. My 20mg prednisone tablets have no expiration date. How long will they maintain their potency and life stored at room temperature around 78 to 82 degrees in fairly dry conditions? ## Hello, Gerry! How are you? If they are still in the original sealed bottle from the factory, then they have a 3 to 4 year expiration date, if kept in a cool, dark, dry location, which would be less than the temperature you've mentioned. If they are in a pharmacy bottle, which exposes them to the elements that cause degradation, then the expiration date is one year from the date they were dispensed to you. Is there anything else I can help with?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandates expiration dates on all medications to ensure safety and efficacy. However, it's worth noting that many medications remain effective even past these dates. In fact, a significant quantity of these outdated medicines are donated to countries in need, such as various regions in Africa and Bangladesh, where they can still be of great help. It's important to understand that most medications do not become toxic after expiration, with the notable exception of certain antibiotics. While some, like penicillin, may lose potency over time, adjustments in dosage can sometimes compensate for this reduced efficacy. ## According to the following Harvard Medical School family health article, many medications can actually last up to 15 years ...

i have prednisone 5052 watons they are ten years old are the pills still good? will they still work? ## No, they have likely lost most of their effectiveness by now and you should just dispose of them. Even when pills are left in the factory sealed container, the longest shelf life is usually only 3 years. Once they are opened and dispensed in a pharmacy bottle that exposes them to the elements that cause degradation, the expiration shortens to just one year. Learn more Prednisone details here. pills expired in 2008- are they still good to treat poison oak in August 2011 ## Certain drugs are actually okay to take after expiration, whereas others such as antibiotics can become toxic. My personal assumption is that it lost a good percentage of its potency by now, having been 3-4 years old. I would also check with your doctor or pharmacy to make sure that you're using the most effective treatment option for poison oak. It may still be effective, but not nearly as potent. It's also impossible to give a direct answer to this question, since each medication can effect people differently. We all know that it's better to avoid the expired drugs and stay on the safe side, but unfortunately, the only way to find out is to actually try it. I wouldn't suggest taking that r...

Have been taking Prednisone 20mg pills split into 4 pieces for a bronchial infection. The pills are expired from 2010. I'm taking the taper off 6 to 1 portions per day. It doesn't seem to be taking effect, although it has worked in the past. Could it have lost it's effectiveness? ## As far as expired meds go, according to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. Source: health.harvard.edu/fhg/updates/update1103a.shtml It's possible that it may still be effective, but my personal assumption is that it lost a good percentage of its potency by now, having been 3 years old. When was the last time you tried taking it? ##...

how long can you store these in your medicine closet before it is not safe to take them? ## Hello, Basil! How are you? If you are asking about a bathroom medicine chest, they should not be stored there, at all. They should be stored somewhere dark, cool and dry, like a kitchen cabinet or other closet that is away from heat, light and moisture. And they should not be kept past the expiration date on the bottle. All tablets eventually degrade and lost effectiveness. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Will prednisone help my sinus post nasel driping down my throat? ## In reading other posts it states it's okay to take medications past their expiration date. It is jan3016 I have 10mg prednisone expiration date may 2015 is it safe fore to use? ## Hello, Lillian! How are you? Actually, I think after over 1,000 years, it has likely lost most of its usefulness. LOL! Sorry, I couldn't resist the joke, typos are so much fun. :-) Either way though, medications do lose efficacy with age, so it would actually be best to dispose of it and see your doctor for a new prescription, if one is needed. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, nervousness and insomnia. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was Rx Prednisone 10 mg x 48 tablet. The Lot number is L043E08A Expires 04 11. Can you explain the expiraton date? ## April 2011? Some pills just have a longer shelf life than others, the expiration is really only required by the FDA to make sure that these pills are used within the time frame that they have maximum effectiveness. After that date, the active ingredients can start to break down and the effectiveness of the medication is reduced. ## I have 10 mg. prednisone tablets which expired 2008. Are they safe to take?
