If that isn't the answer, some of the effects, such as the excessive urination, which would in turn cause the excessive thirst, might be due to the bladder infection itself. ## I have had the infection since ...

I took this drug about 5 hours ago. I am now very itchy and my skin is red and hot especially in the joints and my head and neck groin and backside. I have taken a shower but it did not help. What should I do? I have taken this as macrobid before and have never had this reaction or any for that matter. ## Have you consulted your doctor? It is normal for your body to change, with time, as you age, so it is always possible to develop an allergy to something, even if you have used it before, without any problems. In addition, though they are considered inactive, the fillers in generic medications are usually different than those used in the name brand, so it is possible to have a reaction to one of them, as well. In this case, it's probably not advisable to continue to use this medicat...

Can nitrofur- macr 100mg treat strep throat ? What ages do they prescribe this to? ## Hello, Jane! How are you? There is no set age limit for this antibiotic, though it is generally avoided in those over age 65, since it may cause them more problematic side effects. However, it may not be appropriate to treat strep, that sometimes requires different antibiotics. This one is most commonly used to treat UTIs. The FDA lists the typical antibiotic side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Is there anything else I can help with?

Can this medicine be used to gratis a tooth infection? ## Hi Heidi, I have my doubts, because Nitrofurantoin has poor tissue penetration and is not indicated to treat anything other than simple cystitis (urinary tract infections). I would however recommend using clove essential oil for tooth and mouth related infections. Not only does it numb the pain, but it also kills the infection. A cheap natural alternative to prescription drugs, that is more effective in my opinion. I hope this helps! ## Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic that can be used to treat various types of infections, but it usually isn't the first choice for a dental infection. I am on day 3 OF NITROFURAN MONOHYD MACRO 100MG 100 mg for urinary track infection every 12hrs, I have problems with my stomach and have been prescribed DICYCLOMINE 10MG/5ML. (1/2 hr before meals) Is safe to take while taking NUTRIFURAN? ## Hi Virnia, Based on my research, there are no drug interactions listed between Nitrofurantoin and Dicyclomine. So just going off that information alone, I don't think there should be any problems using the two together (outside of each medication's own general side effects). However, if you still have any reservations about taking them, it may be best to call your doctor up and verify that it's ok with him as well. Was it the same doctor who prescribed you the Nitrofurantoin, that also give you the script for Dicyclomine? ## Does macrobid...

I took nitrofur macr 100 mg for 6 days of the 7 day prescription. I was having serious side effects, such as difficulty breathing, chills, intense nausea, and a skin rash. Within 24 hours of stopping the medication all of the side effects disappeared, except the skin rash. I have been off the medication for 3 days now and the rash is still present. Should I call a doctor or will it go away eventually on its own? ## Sorry that happened, Amber! You should call your doctor to be sure and maybe get something to lessen the duration of the rash, but if that's all you have left, it's doubtful that it's anything dangerous, unless you see signs of the skin breaking and tearing, ulcerating, bleeding, turning black or other unusual symptoms. However, those are signs of an allergy to th...

How long does it retain its potency? I am using a Rx dated 2/15/2011 for a UTI. Is it still effective? ## It has most likely lost some of its effectiveness by now. Once the original factory sealed bottle has been opened and they are exposed to the elements, they start to degrade and maximum effectiveness can only be assured for a period of one year from then. Thus, the expiration on these would have been 2/15/12. Learn more Nitrofurantoin details here. Can I eat dairy products while taking this medication for a UTI? ## Hi Mari, While there are certain antibiotics that cannot be taken with dairy; dairy products are not listed as a food/drug interaction with Macrobid (nitrofurantoin); so in this case there is no need to worry. The reason why some antibiotics cannot be taken with dairy is because some of the minerals in these products can bind to the antibiotic, making it less effective. I hope this info helps!
