I have been taking metoprolol tartrate 50 mg 2x a day for a while now, my doctor just told me to now start taking 2 tablets in the morning and 1 in the evening. I am concerned that 150 mg per day is too much. Can u tell me if this is not a safe dosage or if its ok to take that much? my blood pressure usually runs around 140/85 to 158/92 ## Hello, Rhonda! How are you? I understand your concern, that does seem to be a high amount…but it actually isn't for this medication. Metoprolol can be taken in amounts up to 450mgs a day and it is usually started at the 50mg twice daily dosing, then adjusted until the desired effect is reached, which in your case would be lower blood pressure. Is the best time to take this medicine in the morning or night? ## Has your doctor made any specific recommendation? Metoprolol is a beta blocker, used to treat high blood pressure and cardiac conditions and, in most cases, this type of medication is taken in the morning, because most people are far more active during the day, so that is the time their blood pressure can be elevated. However, it can cause some drowsiness and dizziness, in some people, as a side effect, and in those instances, it may be necessary for someone to take it at night. ## I am taking Lisinopril @20mg and also i am taking Metoprolol tart 25mg tab myl, my question is why do i take two High bloodpressure pills? According to the FDA information, Metoprolol is a beta blocker that is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. Typical side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach pain and increased urination. I was put on metoprolol about 3 weeks ago for hypertension and an ascending aortic aneurysm. I also have PVCs. I take 25 MG every 12 hours. My BP is better but not great. Some readings are normal and most are high (130/90-5 range) I have noticed more heart palpitations since taking it instead of less. I am having intermittent episodes of chest tightness and breathing being more labored. Also have a cough. Feels like a mild asthma attack. In the past, I would get exertional asthma with heavy exercise or laughing. My sleep is worse for waking up with a cough, palpitations, anxiety, or chest heaviness. I also have been hoarse and have a tickle in the back of my throat (postnasal drip?) Are these typical side effects? Do they warrant a reduction in my dosage? I see my cardiologist on Monday...

I was just prescribed this 1x/day to treat palpitations that I frequently get after a meal. Not necessarily the increased heart rate type of palps, but more so the being able to feel every beat in my chest type of palps. What concerns me is that my sleeping heart rate is normally 48-51 and my normal blood pressure often dips to 90s/50s and on the rare occasion can fall to the high 80s/40s. I have never fainted due to low bp, but have often gotten lightheaded upon standing. With starting numbers as low as these, would it be unsafe to start taking this drug? ## Hello, Joe! How are you doing? Have you started taking it, yet? If so, what has occurred? It is odd that this would be prescribed for palpitations that only occur after a meal, since that can be a normal thing for some people due t...

Been having an itching scalp and skin at night when going to bed and it keeps me awake. Changed shampoos several times thinking that was my problem. Seems to be getting worse. Anyone have these side effects? ## Hello, Jules! How are you? This class of medications can cause those types of issues, due to the way they work on your circulation to lower blood pressure and improve heart function, as reported by the FDA.
