I have been taking 25 mg metoprolol and 400 mg magnesium oxide for atrial fibrillation for about a month. Over a week later a bad rash developed on both hands and one hand is red and puffy. Got off the mag oxide since I thought that was what caused it, but the side effects have gotten worse. I can't stand the itching. Afraid to go off both meds, my doc has not been much help and I feel confused. I never took any pills before this. I am 69 years of age. I need it to work really badly, what do I do? ## Hi Linda, sorry to hear about the effects that you're experiencing. It sounds to me like you may be having an allergic or more serious reaction here, so I would recommend reporting all of this to your doctor if you have not already done so. The reason I say that is because you may n...

I have been taking lisinopril 20mg - 2x for a long time. Earlier this year I was given carvedilol 6.25mg - 2x along with above. Shortly thereafter, I reduced the carvedilol ato 1x. A month ago my systolic bp rose. Dr. said to increase carvedilol by taking 2 a day. Upon doing this I started experiencing a rash and itching all over. Dr. then took me off this and prescribed metoprolol tar 25mg 2x with the same reaction of rash and itching and no improvement in bp. Why all the sudden reaction to these drugs? ## Hello, John! How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you're having. Both the Carvedilol and Metoprolol are classified by the FDA as beta blockers, so my best guess is that you may have developed an allergy to this medication category. This happens frequently, such as when s...

Skin rashes and hives are listed as the more serious side effects. I took Metoprolol on and off for palpitations when needed. The last few weeks I took 1/2 tab at 12.5mg only as a preventative since palpitations seemed to increase due to stress. Skin rashes and eczema increased and became miserable. I researched and thought back to the general time these symptoms developed and they were 4 years or so ago around the time I began using M. It has been about 2 weeks. The itching and redness have lessened a bit, but I wonder if anyone else can share symptoms and hope that they will go away. ## Typically, side effects are transient and go away in time, once your body gets used to a medication. However, since you're only taking this occasionally, that's most likely not going to happen ...

Been having an itching scalp and skin at night when going to bed and it keeps me awake. Changed shampoos several times thinking that was my problem. Then I saw the list of side effects and it could be this medicine. Feels like ants crawling on my skin during the day and at night. Been taking this since my open heart surgery in Jan 2015. Seems to be getting worse. Anyone have these side effects? ## Hello, Jules! How are you? This class of medications can cause those types of issues, due to the way they work on your circulation to lower blood pressure and improve heart function, as reported by the FDA. I used to experience it myself, when I was taking Candesartan. However, since you have had open heart surgery, there could be something else going on with your circulation that isn't re...

How are you? I'm sorry about the problems you've had. The joint and muscle pain can be normal side effects of this medication and has caused many people to have to stop taking it. It can also cause dizziness, hair loss and increased urination, as reported by the FDA. It made me very miserable, when I tried it and I had to stop taking it, too. That rash, however, isn't listed, though it has been known to cause a general rash, with itching. What medication d...

is side effect itching and rashes ## No, those aren't normal side effects. Have you consulted your doctor? Metoprolol is a beta blocker, so what you may be experiencing are some circulatory issues that it may be causing. Thus, it may not be the right medication for you and you should discuss it with your doctor. ## Is Metaprol Tar 100mg by Ranbaxy the same as Metoprolol Tar 100mg by Teva?

Has anyone experienced itching all over plus itchy bumps on scalp. I weaned myself off of it awhile back and the itching and bumps pretty much went away but my blood pressure went up so dr put me back on it. (He was not happy that I stopped taking it) has anyone else experienced these symptoms. Labatatol is the only new drug I started taking when I first started itching & bumps. Help!!! ## Has your doctor had you try any other medications to help lower your blood pressure? There are over a 100 on the market that might help, without causing such side effects. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Some of them include Metoprolol, Lisinopril, Candesartan, and Losartan.
