I am non diabetic but obese 48-year-old female. My doctor gave me Glucomet 500 mg half tablet morning and half tablet in the night for weight reduction. Is it safe for a non diabetic to take diabetic medicine? ## HI, Malathi! Yes, it's safe as long as your doctor is going to be supervising you regularly. When it's used in such cases, it's due to your doctor suspecting that you may be insulin resistant, thus an antidiabetic medication may help improve your situation and enable you to lose weight. You may experience some side effects from it, such as nausea, headache and flatulence. Is there anything else I can help with?

I am 71 but very active, I am also diabetic type 2 and take metformin and glibencizide every morning and evening. My doctor gave me lisinopril 10mg and bisocor 2.5 mg (half a tablet) for high blood pressure, I am keeping it at approx 125/75 with this medicine. My blood sugar is between 5 and 7 mml and my blood tests are okay. I have had a stress testfor my heart and that was okay, I am overweight at 110kg but am trying to lose weight. I feel shaky inside and lacklustre, could my medicine be causing a reaction. Every time I see my doctor, he sends me for tests and basically they all come back okay. I am not a whining hypochondriac, just a normal guy who would like to feel normal. I live in Zimbabwe where the medical facilities are not that great.

Can metformin 850 mg can cause a loss in weight of the diabetic? Thanks ## I've been diabetic since 2000 and have been controlling it by diet, but after 6 yrs it is not in control so i started metformin 500 x 2 daily. But after, in 2010 my sugar was staying too high so i was prescribed janumet which caused me to gain 5kgs in a year. Plus my feet hurt a lot and I'm feeling very weak. Please help me. ## Sandy, many type 2 diabetics tend to have gained weight from the diabetes, then they will lose some once they start getting it under control, such as by using the medication. However, if it's a severe weight loss, then you should seek medical attention to have it checked out. Rozy, how have your blood sugar levels been recently? Are you also continuing to watch what you eat? ##...

I take 1500mg in the morning after breakfast and 1000 mg after dinner. I was told it can lead to early memory loss. Is this true? I've been taking this for quite a few years now. ## Hello, Mary! How are you? No, I've not seen that listed among its possible side effects, the only psychiatric one listed is headaches, according to the FDA, Others may possibly include nausea, dizziness, hypoglycemia, flatulence and diarrhea. May I ask who told you? Was it a doctor or a pharmacist? ## My son was prescribed misinform 500mg - one tablet twice a day. He has been on this drug for two months. Can I use Metformin for weight reduction? I wanted to know about the side effects of Metformin... ## I wouldn't count on using an anti-diabetic drug for weight loss. Your best bet is a healthy change in eating habits and regular exercise. A pill won't lose the weight for you. Sorry to sound blunt, but it would be ignorant to think otherwise. As far as side effects go...the most common adverse effect of metformin is gastrointestinal upset, including diarrhea, cramps, nausea, vomiting and increased flatulence; metformin is more commonly associated with gastrointestinal side-effects than most other anti-diabetic drugs. The most serious potential side-effect of metformin use is lactic acidosis; this complication is very rare, and the vast majority of these cases seem to be related t...

I have been on this drug for almost 4 weeks now. I have had diahrea really bad. It is always like water. Everything I eat goes straight through. I have been taking anti diarhea pills with no help. I have lost ten pounds. Is this normal and what can i do for it? ## I stopped taking metformin about 2 years ago because of diarhrea and also the fact that I wanted to completely control my diabetes with diet only. Diet did work somewhat but did not put my blood sugar numbers into the "normal zone". I began taking metformin again recently to further reduce my blood sugar and to lose weight. As long as I eat NO SUGAR, NO BREAD, NO RICE, NO POTATOES, NO PASTA AND NO RICE - I never have diarhea now. LOW CARB IS THE WAY TO GO IF YOU HAVE DIABETES. ## Yes, the diarrhea can be a normal side ...

My six year old child took a 500 mg Metformin by mistake. What should I do? ## Call poison control or your local hospital......by now the effects are over as I am sure you didn't wait 5 days for an answer. You need to call doc, possibly give oj and watch for signs of low blood sugar; drowsiness, shaking, thirst can accompany due to fast physiological changes. I only left this answer in case someone read this. AND, I hope your 6 year old is ok.

I was recently switched from Glyburid-Metformin to Metformin HCL 500 MG - I have been experiencing frequent migrane headaches (daily) and have put on over 5 lbs in 2 weeks. Also my blood sugar numbers are higher especially in the morning. Only benefit is that there have been no more low readings. ## Have you consulted your doctor? Suddenly stopping any medication that you've been taking for a long period of time may result in some withdrawal and rebound effects, which may explain your symptoms, but you should talk to your doctor about it, to be certain. Has there been any improvement, yet? ## I switched back two days ago. Headaches still happening but not nearly as severe. Low sugar reading happened once.

what is the difference between metformin and metformin SA ## Hello, Gary! How are you? The SA stands for sustained action, it's just another way to designating it as being a time released formulation of the medication. The FDA classifies Metformin as being an oral antidiabetic medication and its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, flatulence, diarrhea and hypoglycemia. Is there anything else I can help with?

I've been on Metformin for 9 months and have gained weight even though it is supposed to help lose weight. Has anyone else had this problem and/or does Avandia help? ## Yes, I have gained everything back that I had worked so hard to lose, 15 lbs. My doc says it isn't the Avandia, but you can't convince me. I started gaining after I was put on it. ## I HAVE ALSO BEEN ON METFORMIN FOR YEARS...WHEN I STARTED THIS MED IT DID MAKE ME GAIN WEIGHT ALSO....EVEN THOUGH DOCTORS SWEARS IT DOESNT...IT DIDI ## My husband lost from a size 46 to 40, then the doctor put him on avandia and in one month he gained back up to size 46. His new weight doctor told him to get off of the avandia because it does cause weight gain and even states so in the advertisement.

I weigh myself twice weekly, my scale tells me I have gained 4 pounds over a short period. I have been on Metformin 750 for over a year. My concern is this rapid gain. Can anyone tell me about their experience and what they found to keep weight stable. My diet includes fresh fruit , low carb vegetables, some whole grain bread, and whole wheat pasta. I noticed recently though snacking on nuts mixed in dried fruit. ## How rapidly have you gained weight? The NIH does warn that diabetes itself can cause weight changes, however there are other issues that could cause it, as well, such as high blood pressure, edema, or a heart condition. Thus, the safest thing to do would be to have this checked out by your medical provider, for your own safety. How much are you snacking? Some nuts can contai...

I am hypertensive and diabetic and was prescribed to take amlodipine with metformin. But, since I also have chronic bilateral renal parenchymal disease with nephrolithiases and enlarged prostate, I had to take tamsulosin with acalka also. Doctors say that the first two conditions have to be gone before any progress in the other conditions can take effect. And, the kidney stones, too. ESWL is expensive and I could't work meantime except from home due to the outcrop of side effects -- ex., diarrhea alternating with constipation -- not to mention the attendant pain of having kidney stones inside me and the looming fever that neither burns too hot nor lets me off completely in some eternal purgatory of chilly heat. As to tamsulosin, I have nothing but thanks for being able to urinate natur

The Metformin is actually an oral antidiabetic drug that has been shown, in some case, to help treat PCOS for some women.
