Cefalexin, also spelled cephalexin, is an antibiotic that can treat a number of bacterial infections.[4] It kills gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria by disrupting the growth of the bacterial cell wall.[4] Cefalexin is a beta-lactam antibiotic within the class of first-generation cephalosporins.[4] It works similarly to other agents within this class, including intravenous cefazolin, but can be taken by mouth.[5] Cefale...

I have a horrendous toothache. I have some left over keflex and want to kow if I should take it? If I do and run out, will my dentist give me more, and will it be effective? ## i would like to know if keflex can be taken by a person who is alergic to sulfa drugs ## Keflex is an antibiotic so it will fight an infection if there is one BUT if not then your tooth ache will not subside. If you have a refill on it then yes you can get more otherwise your doctor/dentist may want to just evaluate your situation and then he can decide whether or not you need something more then just a quick fix ## I would like to know if Keflex will help with a toothache, they are 500mg, how should i take them? ## 1. The physician suspects he has developed an infection at his surgical site. He prescribes Keflex 5...

Has anyone ever been prescribed Keflex propholactically for a period of 90 days (500 mg for 90 days)? In my case, it is being done due to a UTI with the Klebisiella Planticola bacterium. Got the infection 3 times and a 5-day course of 500 mg 3 x a day did not eliminate it. I feel very sick on this drug but we have to get rid of this infection. I have 60 days left and am praying to God, it will kill the bacteria. My doc has also prescribed Ellura (a cranberry tablet) to start taking right away in order to prevent the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. ## Hello, Shannie! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems you've been having. Yes, a long course of antibiotics is usually prescribed to prevent further infection, or to ensure full eradication of the bacteria. The ...

I am getting chest pain while on Keflex I feel that is related, but I don't see it listed as a side effect of the medication ## Hello, DW! How are you? No, that is not a normal side effect to this antibiotic, those would normally be things like nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash, stomach pain and diarrhea. Any time you experience chest pain, you should have it checked out, because there is a risk of being something serious. However, there is a chance that it has just caused you to produce more stomach acid than usual and the chest pain might be due to GERD. Have you ever suffered from heartburn, acid reflux, gastritis or an ulcer?

shelf life of keflex ## Hi patty, From what I could gather, Keflex (Cephalexin) has a shelf life of 3 years. After this time frame, the medication may not be nearly as effective as it should be, and therefore may not be strong enough to eradicate certain types of infections at this point. If you do have expired antibiotics, it's probably a good idea to visit your doctor for a new script. This way you can at least be certain that it'll work the way it's supposed to and not cause drug resistant bacteria. You can learn more about this drug on the page for Cephalexin Details I hope this helps!

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache and stomach pain. However, since you are allergic to the others, there is a risk of your also being allergic to the Macrobid. A person who is allergic to one or more medications usually discovers more that they are allergic and have bad reactions to. Is there anything else I can help with?

Hi, I have been taking 500mg 4 times per day for 8 weeks for a potential osteomylitis. My concern is if my body is building a tolerance to the Keflex. The infection is still present, and although it has diminished somewhat has not gone away. ## It isn't that you really build a tolerance to an antibiotic, it's that the bacteria can develop antibiotic resistance. However, that shouldn't be a concern after just this short of a time period, that usually occurs with long-term use or repeated use of the same antibiotic. When will your doctor be checking the infection, again? ## Thanks for your response. I saw the microbioligist this past Monday and he changed the antibiotics to another one in the same "family" and I will have to take it for another 28 days at least. He als...

I have a niece that is pregnant and is allergic to Penicillin. Her regular doctor gave her Keflex for what they thought was a bacterial skin infection. Her mother, my sister, was just told that Keflex can cause deafness for an unborn infant. Is this true? Is there a website or someplace I can get information from about this? We are very worried. The skin condition ended up not being bacterial after all. Thanks for all info you can give us. ## I was put on it when i was pregnant with my son back in 2005. I was told to take it up to my delivery that it would be fine for the baby. He is going to be 5 in February and he is just fine and has no signs of anything wrong. ## Yes, according to the FDA reports, it has no known harmful effects on the fetus and is considered safe for use during pre...

I took keflex for a week after bunion surgery. I lost 40 percent of my hair. It was an all over thinning. It receded in my temples. While it was falling out, it felt like someone took a blow torch to my head. I was then pressured into to trying mobic. The hair loss hadn't started yet. Takes a couple months. Anyway, as soon as I took it, I was a mess. I now have IBS D and C. It's horrible. I had no idea this could happen. My life is ruined! Perscription doesn't warn you, doctor doesn't either. I won't go into the side effects. There's way to many! I'm getting a lawyer! If you look up the side effects online, it doesn't warn you there either. Unless you specifically type in hair loss, or IBS from keflex or mobic. Can't cure it either. You can treat with...

Hello, I took this for ten days four X per day for infected tooth. How long AFTER I get off it will the keflex still help? I am going to be doing a second round while I wait for oral surgery, but how long in between rounds should I be okay? Thanks MUCH. It's urgent. ## Unfortunately, there's no time frame that can be quoted to answer your question, since we are all different, and it may also be affect by other factors, such as your overall health, the type of infection you have, how severe the infection is, and etc. The best thing to do would be to try and minimize the dosing gap, as much as possible. It is an antibiotic, not a controlled substance, so to speak, so you should be able to pick up a refill right away. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Keflex as possibly inc...

Hope you're feeling better soon. Kenie. ## I am in so much pain I think I'm Litterally going crazy. Can't eat. I was prescribed Keflex 500 mg - 4 times per day. I meant to grab a pain pill (I'm recovering from an open dislocation) and accidentally took a second dose of the Keflex instead. Should I be concerned? ## Never mind. I skipped the dose the next am & was blessed to not have any side effects. :-) ## Hello, Amy! How are you? It was actually worse to skip your next dose than it was to have doubled up on the one. Doubling up isn't really dangerous, since this is just an antibiotic and might just cause you to experience more side effects, such as nausea, dizziness and diarrhea than usual. But skipping a dose gives the bacteria a chance to repopulate and possibly develop antibiotic resistance. I know you can't change what's happened, but I wanted you to know for future refe...

So sorry about your loss, that's very tragic. However, Keflex is an antibiotic, which contains the active ingredient Cephalexin and it is considered safe during pregnancy, so it is doubtful that it contributed. Learn more Keflex details here. If you were having symptoms that made it seem like you had a UTI, but actually found out later that you didn't have one, it is possible that it was actually a miscarriage already starting.
