I get ear infections often and the Dr. prescribed AMOX-CLAV 875MG, but I still have some of the medicine left from last year, is it ok to take it today or will a year old prescription give me side effects? ## Hello, Patty! How are you? I'm sorry about the ear infection, they can be quite painful. What is the expiration date on the prescription? It should be one year from whenever it was dispensed to you by your pharmacy. If it is still good and your doctor okays it, plus verifies the presence of an infection, then you should be able to take it, as long as you have enough to complete a full course of treatment. According to the FDA, antibiotics may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. However, if the medication is expired, if y...

can amox-clav 875 be used for staff infection on the skin? ## Information I was able to gather states that: "Amoxicillin is often the drug of choice for staph infections of the ear, throat and nose, says Rx List. Doctors also order amoxicillin for staph infections of the skin and skin structures, or for lower respiratory infections like bronchitis and pneumonia. For patients with skin infections from beta-lactamase-producing staph, doctors will often order amoxicillin/clavulanate." NOTE: Adults typically take 250 to 500 mg of amoxicillin three times a day, or 500 to 875 mg twice a day for 7 to 10 days, for staph infections of the skin. The above information is referenced from: I hope this helps! ## I was just prescribed exactly what you posted. 875mg 2x day of Amox-Clav for 10 d...

I have been taking 2 pills a day of this for eight days. It was prescribed to me to prevent infection in a ruptured ear drum. The last few days I feel as if I have come down with a head cold. My sinuses are dripping constantly and I am sneezing. How is this possible with all this atibiotics in me? ## Simply because a cold is not caused by an infection, a cold is caused by a virus and therefore the antibiotics will have no effect on preventing it or helping it to clear up. An antibiotic is only effective at preventing or treating infections. The antibiotic may cause some side effects, such as: nausea, drowsiness, skin rash and diarrhea. The cold may also make the diarrhea worse, so you need to be careful and make sure you take in a lot of fluids to prevent dehydration. Learn more: Are th...

I have a full bottle of these pills and my dog has a bladder infection. He is 126 lbs. Can I give him these? They expire in June so I won't be using them. ## Hi smokey, Based on my research, it should be ok for your dog as long as you're administering the correct dosage. The recommended dosage of Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid is listed at 12.5mg (per kilogram of body weight). I have a prescription of Amox/k clav 875-125 that I was giving for an ear infection. I have about half the bottle left, now months later I have white puss on my throat which looks to b strept. Will this for medicine b effective for a thoat infection? ## This is the generic version of the antibiotic Augmentin, which is used to treat various types of infections. However, the problem is that you may not have enough to fully eradicate the infection, since a full course of treatment is needed, which would usually be about 10 days. That coupled with the fact that the presence of an infection hasn't been confirmed by a doctor creates the risk of your developing antibiotic resistant bacteria, which is something you've already put yourself at risk of, if you didn't finish the full co...

What kind of an infection is this for and how does it interact with alcohol? ## Amoxicillin is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia; bronchitis; gonorrhea; and infections of the ears, nose, throat, urinary tract, and skin. It is also used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers. Amoxicillin is in a class of medications called penicillin-like antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, and other viral infections. The Amoxicillin + Clavulanate Potassium "combination" results in an antibiotic with an increased spectrum of action and restored efficacy against amoxicillin-resistant bacteria that produce -lactamase. In other words this is a more...

My wife (Diabetic) with history of bladder infections, went to doctor with ache/pains and strong difficulty swallowing, was diagnosed with ear and throat (swollen) infection. Prescription was AMOX -CLAV, 1-tablet every 12-hr. She has been on subject pill for 24-hr's w/o any discernible change, complaining of strong body ache/pains and difficulty swallowing. How long should I rely on pill, if no change, before returning to doctor... or going to hospital? ## Hi! Sorry she's so miserable! The general rule for antibiotics is that there should be no worsening after they've been taken for a full 24 hours and improvement should start within 72 hours (3 days), so if you see worsening or there's no improvement after that time frame, she'll need more medical attention. This is...
