i found some hydrocodone in my drawer, they were kept in a dry dark place in the original container, they were prescribed in 2007 but expired in 2010 and now its about 7 years past the due date. are they still safe to take? ## Hello, Lexi! How are you? They do not become dangerous, once expired, but they do begin to lose efficacy, being that old, they will most likely not work well, anymore. Thus, it would be best to dispose of them and see your doctor for a new prescription. I have some Hydrocodone 5mg/500mg they expired 2009 would they still be ok to take? ## This medication which is a generic for Vicodin doesn't get dangerous once it's past the expiration date, but it does lose effectiveness, so after 3 years, they aren't likely to do much in the way of pain relief. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I used hydrocodone liquid form from 2009. How long is the expiration for that. Can't find the bottle now. ## Not true. I have received these pills on 11/5/2014, and was wondering if the remaining pills are safe to take? ## Hello, BigAl! How are you? If they're in a pharmacy bottle, then the expiration date would be one year from when they were dispensed to you. So, if you received them from your pharmacy on 11/05/2014 then they are good until 11/04/2015. However, only your doctor can say if they are safe for you to take. What is the shelf life of these pills? 12, 18, 24 Months? I do understand like all other products, they do lose their potency. ## Once they have been removed from the originally factory sealed bottle and exposed to the elements, then the expiration date is one year. If they are still in the original factory sealed bottle, then the expiration date is 3 years from the date of manufacture. Are there any other questions? ## Thank you, I'll be throwing these pills out ## I believe they say you can keep them for 3 years, that is if they are sealed from the manufacturer. Personally I wouldn't wouldn't worry too much about a month more or less. Heat and light may affect stength. ## I have a 500 mg vicodine that expired in 02/08/2013. It is a year and 6 months old. I have a prescription for HYDROCODONE APAP 5-500 TABLMCK that has a discard date of 2010. Are these still safe to use? If not, what is recommended method of disposal? ## They don't get dangerous past the expiration date, but they do lose effectiveness, so they are most likely worthless by now. The recommended FDA method of disposal is to mix them with some undesirable substance, such as used coffee grounds, or used kitty litter and then to place that in a sealed container in the garbage. Learn more Vicodin details here. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thanks for the info. I will use your suggestion as to disposal.

I would like to know if Hydroco/apap 10-500mg tablets are still good after a year and for how long they are good. ## Medications have an expiration (usually of 1 year) because by law it must have one. If you had these hydrocodone/apap pills in a dark, cool place such as a kitchen cabinet, bedroom drawer, etc. chances are still fine. Most pills are actually good for two years from the fill date as long as they are cared for properly. If you had them in the medicine chest in the bathroom, (a bad place for medication) then they may have lost some or all of their potency. When a medication like this one becomes older, it is not really dangerous to take it, rather it might have lost some of it narcotic and/or acetaminophen properties. DO NOT USE THIS RULE FOR EVERY MEDICATION ESPECIALLY FOR ...

I injured myself in 2011 and was given hydrocodone/apap 5mg/500mg. I reaggrivated the injury and was given a new script for them but I have no insurance to cover the cost. Medications tend to lose effectiveness over time, which is why they have an expiration date, that is the maximum time the company can guarantee full efficacy under the average storage conditions. My 9yr old was perscribed 7.5mls of hydocodone aceteminophen 7.5mg for pain after a tonsilectomy. I have hydroco/apap solution 7.5-500 from her sisters tonsilectomy when she was 6yrs old. Are they the same? Same dose? The hydro/apap expired 7-1-14. Can I still use it? ## Hello, Crystal! How are you? No, you should dispose of the old one. Liquid medications don't last long past the expiration date, they tend to degrade much faster than solid forms and they can also go sour, so it may make her sick, if you give it to her. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
